Remote Start Cost

Anyone have any info on what a fair price is on the "factory" remote start that uses the fob on a TE/SR5? List is $695 and these buttholes keep quoting list on everything! I am buying the thing new and I asked quite clearly for a good price - not list.

I will buy on EBay and do it myself if I can't get it close to $500. Does that seem out of line?

Also, any experience installing this unit? I did one on a Pacifica and that was a chore but went easily enough. Had to tie in wires to the ignition harness and an actual spark wire.

I chose to add it after I negotiated the contract for the truck, they charged me $540 for it to be installed at the port (Portland, OR). If you are still negotiating, you have wiggle room. If not... enjoy installing it.
 
You may want to research the factory starter..i posted a link below...apparently once the vehicle is started...then the door is opened..the vehicle engine stops...so you have to restart it again....that was a show stopper for me..and made no sense...

i had an after market starter installed...and very happy with it...had it for a year or so...i believe the install can be complicated...and needs a bypass module for the security key...etc...(sry..im not mechanically inclined)

i had a VIPER 4203 remote start installed, also a "PKALL Bypass Platform" was on my bill....local custom-shop guy ive used for 10+ years...total was $359+tax.

Having the engine shut down when the door opens is beyond stoopid. Your best bet is an aftermarket model, installed by a reputable local company. I was in that trade for a few years and I would highly recommend one from CompuStar. I've had one for 8 years and it's never failed.
If you do install it yourself stay away from any yellow connectors or you may catch an airbag with your face. I knew a professional installer who got his arm broken when he probed the wrong wire.
 
Thanks for the input. I have a deposit down to get the thing to my dealer so I am kinda screwed and they don't care and won't come off retail. Beechmont Toyota can eat my ass and I haven't even closed yet!

My only problem with aftermarket is that I need a second fob. That sucks. Can't fit that in my skinny jeans pocket... j/k

Is that an alarm fob in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me? :eek:
Why do you need a second fob? Any good A/M starter has an alarm with keyless entry built into it. so you only need one remote. It's a moot point I guess if your dealer already has you over a barrel. :boink:
 
Well, I did the research and decided to put a Viper 5101 in. Cheap as dirt in comparison and it will straight up replace the Yota fob. Don't know why I didn't consider that the lock/unlock would be available in the new fob.

The NON smart key, is a regular key attached to an electronic fob. The fob can lock and unlock the door, set off a security alarm etc., but that is it. Smart key (with the limited) is much smarter! The OP has the regular key I think, since he was looking for a remote starter for a TE or SR5.

Even though you apparently have a smart key, Is there still a mechanical door lock on your vehicle somewhere? If so, I think yes, you can still get a regular key made to fit that. (Not that you would want or need one but......)
 
Yeah, TE has a standard cut key. I could swear that the fob is not built into the key but I guess my memory if faulty. I did only spend about 1 minute in the drivers seat.

Not a big deal either way. The Viper remote appears to be pretty slim.
