Remote start question

No - you can get a ticket for a vehicle running unattended - I know a couple of people who have. Lots of stolen cars here which is probably the reason. Even cars with smart keys are being stolen - apparently there is a way to hack the signal from a smart key with a receiver.

I'm a retired avionics / Instrumentation tech from a flight test center in Wichita.

Thanks El Dusty. That goes along the lines I was thinking. Just a module that reports the start function to the vehicles computer to start the engine. I looked at the OEM kits and the installation by the dealer and they want right around $450 installed. The OEM kit has a bunch of other parts and brackets I have no clue what they are needed for. My 4R sits right outside my front window about 20 feet away. I would want the engine to shut off if the door was opened and it was not me opening it. I use the remote start on those zero degree days when I have an inch of ice needing to be scraped off the windshield.

With the Accesorides kit you triple click the lock button to start up. It DOES NOT turn off when the door is opened. It will turn off if you hit the brakes before you insert the key or push the start button. I think this way is safe as you know your vehicle is locked and even if it was unlocked it will shut off to anyone that tries to operate the vehicle without the key. Also the engine will idle for 20 min before it shutsdown automatically. And I believe it will give 3 start attempts before it gives up to save battery.

YUP! I read up on this system and have 2 already shipped and heading at me for my 4R and the wife's RX350.

Are you 100% sure about that with the Smart Key? Unless they have changed something this a quote directly from Accesorides:

On the push to start models the vehicle will shutoff when you open the door. Unfortunately that happens with any system out there for the push start Toyota/Lexus. For the key start models, you still have normal takeover to get in and drive.

I have a 17 TRDOR with the stock remote start installed. What is the best option to get that eliminates the shutoff at door opening? I see the accessorides option and compustar options are recommended. Do I just order the kit and plug and play or do I need to uninstall the factory system?

My 2014 Toyota 4Runner SR5 Premium Remote Start Stopped Working?

I believe it might of stopped working during the time I replaced the door locks with eBay bought ones instead of OEM.

I have since replaced ALL except drivers side one. I've searched everywhere on the internet, and on the manual that mostly only talks about 'smart key' which I doubt I have. I do not have auto unlocking or push start.

And then I read it's most likely the switch inside the hood latch? Does anyone have experience with this? Is it easy to fix?

The dealer installed an Avital kit in our 2019 TRD. Works great!

Two clicks on the separate fob, it starts up. One more click when you're ready to load up and it unlocks. Put the key in the on position and you're good to go.

Hitting a pedal will shut off the engine.
