Replaced the cat with a Magnaflow, now P0136?

Hey all

First time real post on here and of course it's to ask a question. My 4Runner through a nice P0136 last night. I read a couple of posts while searching this that mentioned "don't buy the Magnaflow" cats, as they can cause your ECU to toss this code and it seems I might have doomed myself.

Now, the question I have is, did I ruin the O2 sensor downstream by going cheap on the cat, or is it just a problem of the cat not performing up to Toyota standards?

Vehicle is a '01 4Runner, 165k on it with a new cat as of about 3000 miles ago. Vehicle is freeway driven 90% of the time, with a couple of jaunts camping.

Sorry if this is such a newb question for you guys, but I'm coming off 10 years of Jeep ownership and the dumb is hard to get rid of

It's not really the Magnaflow that caused the issue, rather the fact that you just have a single cat now. I'm pretty sure all the 01-02 trucks were Cali-spec...meaning they had two cats, and the downstream O2 is therefore programmed pretty aggressively. It wants to see REALLY clean emissions, or it'll toss the code. Any time you replace two cats with a single on a 4runner, you'll get a code.


I would just buy a URD rear sim from URD Racing. It'll get rid of the code, and you'll still have the benefit of a higher flowing cat.

Well, if there are two cats, only one has been replaced so the other is still there. Can't check right now due to working, but it's still running all the factory gear that was there. I only replaced the one because it started rattling and annoying the crap out of me and the Magnaflow was a universal (and cheap) option.

Anyone know if the Magnaflows just aren't up to the task? And details on the URD sim? Is it legal for emissions?
