Get Real ! This is Toyota your talking about , we haven't had decent cup holder since -----well , ever really . More likely to get a V10 solid front axle offroad monster then a great cup holder.

Total generation sales would goto the 4th gen. It's unique in the automotive world to have sales continue to increase with very little change to the platform. Mid 2011 had the Tsunami. 2016 also had the earthquake/fire disruption. I don't have anything against the 4th Gen. Tried to talk the wife into a low mileage 4th Gen.

This statement is completely untrue. I'm appalled really. I had a 1989 hilux 4X4 with the pullout cupholders RIGHT in front of the A/C ducts. Yes, ice cold bee, ahem, Cokes all the time!!! Winter? Hot coffee ALL. THE. TIME. (Shatner voice)

I just want a manual tranny in my 4Runner. The rest is good. I like my big mouth 4X4 bass fish truck cause it's different.

Went to auto show today. They had new the 4runner off road there with the listed specs as a 2016. Toyota can't even get the year right. Looked at the Tacoma trd pro, I wanted to like it but the seats do not have height adjustability. Shame on Toyota. The ridgeline has a way nicer interior and the seats are powered. Toyota is really lacking.

2009 was a carryover year, so the sales numbers for that year are very misleading. I remember strongly considering trading my 2004 for a 2009 when I first learned about the 5th generation 4Runner coming out. I didn't like the looks and I didn't like how much stuff Toyota took out of the 5th gen. The problem was that 2009 models were extremely rare and extremely limited. I could only find two Sport Editions anywhere in the tri-state area and both of them were red (I had red), so I decided to just hold on to my 2004 and wait to see what happens with the 6th gen. Strangely, I'm still waiting.
The advantage now for the 5th gen is that the rest of the competition has pretty much disappeared. Direct competitors like the Xterra are history. Pathfinders are now essentially minivans. Even the death of the FJ Cruiser has helped increase 4Runner sales. So it doesn't surprise me that 4Runner sales increased for the last two years, considering that there's nothing that really directly competes. Jeep Wrangler somewhat competes, but it's more of a dedicated offroader. Jeep Grand Cherokee is probably the closest competitor, but it's not body-on-frame.
Personally, I'm starting to get the itch for a new SUV. If Toyota doesn't show us the next gen 4Runner soon, I'm might switch over to the dark side and get a Jeep. A couple of friends have them and they are really nice vehicles. I'd be nervous about the reliability, but my buddies haven't had any issues with theirs, so who knows???

Avoid the Grand Cherokee and Cherokee. Wrangler has about the same resale value as the 4Runner. Get it in the writing the dealer will fix any water leaks from the freedom top. Go for the Rubicon. Skip the Hard Rock edition. Alpine has a new stereo that fits the Wrangler. Wrangler stereos are lacking.
There is a major update coming to the Wrangler. The current version will continue to be sold for awhile as the "Classic" Wrangler.

The Wrangler is more of an offroad rig and it's just not good on the road. The truth is that 98% of my driving is on road, so I want something that's good on the road, but can still handle a trail or two once in a while. That's why I got a 4Runner in the first place.
That said, I REALLY like the new Grand Cherokees. I know people like to bash them, but two of my friends have 2015 models and there are three people at work who have new ones too. Not one of them has anything bad to say about their Grand Cherokees, other than the fuel economy is worse than expected. But I guess that's what you get when you choose the Hemi engine. Anyway, reliability doesn't really worry me that much because of warranties. I have a German car that's now out of warranty, so I obviously don't mind living on the edge! :wow::bounce:

Toyota will NEVER sell a Japanese diesel in the US.
They might install a US diesel (Cummins, Duramax) in one of their US made trucks.
