rochmpr Rev. 4 - Broke (Build) Thread

Latest Update

I have been a little disappointed with my rear coils. They flexed well, but I was constantly hitting the bump stops just going down the road carrying very little stuff. I had the Metal Tech LT-HD springs.

At Overland Expo West, I spoke to Metal Tech about a high capacity spring, but due to lack of demand and cost, this was not something the would be considering. I then started talking to Dobinsons and it sounded like they had some availability and options. After I returned, I started up a conversation with Mike and went through my issues and gave him some measurements as well as some estimates of additional weight. He recommended the C59-677V rear coil.

I decided I would give them a try and order direct from Dobinsons. Mike had them shipped out the same day and they arrived within a few days.

Over the weekend, I got them installed. Damn, that is a pain in the ass! I had to remove both upper links to drop the axle down far enough to get the coils out. The upper control arm was limited in down travel by the gas tank. Ended up having to remove the gas tank skid in order to get the coil in. After a good 4 hours, I had everything back together and enjoying a cold IPA.

Hoping to get some trail time this week for an update on their ride and performance.

Pic for comparison.

I have been having the same thoughts... I think I might copy you! On, and can bumps are on my list!

First impression while driving California's level roads are they are much more firm, never hit the bump stops, which was normal on this road. Even felt like there was less body roll than normal, most likely due to their stiffness. Looking forward to see how they do on the trail, and if all goes well, I am planning on running Sourgrass tomorrow.

My lift and weight won't be to your extent, but I am curious to see how you like these springs. They are on my list of springs that I am interested in for providing a 2-2.5" lift with about 25-50% greater weight capacity over stock.

Swapping to these springs netted ZERO additional lift or loss. The truck sits exactly like it did with the Metal Tech HD springs. As far as how they are handling the weight, it seems like, at this point, they are better. Will need to see after the break it and get some use.

Did you completely remove your KDSS, pistons and all, or did you just tie the pistons up out of the way?

I am having the same issue...constantly hitting bump stops in the rear when off road. I have Dobinson's 675 rear coils in my garage. I'm waiting to install them after my new cargo system goes in (~200 lbs)...hope the 675's do alright...if not maybe the 677's are the ticket!

Keep us posted as you get more miles on them. Thanks!

A quick trip to Sourgrass yesterday. The new Dobinsons srings worked great. In all, pretty happy with this upgrade. The only time I was on the bump stops was a full compression. On our lovely road, even pulling a trailer, I never hit them. It was pretty standard to hit the bump stops just going down the road. They definitely carry the excess weight better and still flex great!

Headed out to Flagstaff and Sedona this past weekend to meet up with some friends and go to Overland Expo West. Walked around the show for a bit and met up with a couple T4R members, Jhalko and Ducmonsta. I could only handle so much, so one the way back to Sedona, I decided to take the scenic route. There were some awesome views overlooking Sedona.

Nice pics..Edge of the World

Nothing like a four day weekend full of adventure!

Headed out of town Friday to the mountains and learned that there is a 2nd eatery now. The local general store is now serving wood fired pizza, burgers, wings, fries, beer and wine and a large grassy area outside to eat, kid and dog friendly, too.

From there, headed to the cabin and unpacked. The next morning involved a work-out at the "gym" after the morning coffee.

From there, we wen to the local pool. for a few hours, came back BBQ'd and decided to head up the mountain to catch the sunset.

I knew a good spot to go catch the show, which required a little offroad action. We go to the top of the hill and set-up there to watch the show.

The following day started the same, coffee and morning work out at the wood pile after loading up the kayaks. Last week, it was announced that Spicer Rd. would open, which let us head to our favorite lakes to kayak out to an island, hang out and have lunch before heading back.

The last day of adventure, we decided that since Ebbett's Pass (Hwy. 4) had just opened on Friday, we would head over the pass to Markleeville and Grover Hot Springs. There was not as much snow as I was expecting, but just over the pass out in the trees, there was still large deep areas of snow. The scenery going over Ebbett's Pass is always spectacular.

Looked like a great time and that's a beautiful mountain lake

In the past couple weeks, added another Toyota to the stable, a Highlander Limited AWD. That now makes three Toyota's in the driveway.

So this past weekends adventure was in the new ride. We headed down the hill and picked up some sandwiches at the local grocery store and then on to the trail. We hiked down the trail, less than a mile and not too difficult, to this natural cave called Natural Bridges. Hung out and got in the water, as it was about 100° that day. After a while, headed back up the hill and wen to the local general store for some wood fired pizza, wings, fries, cold beer and live music. The artist was a local guy we say open for Charlie Daniels about a year ago. After that, time for a last cold one and watch the sun set.

Made a quick run up Signal Peak on Saturday. Met up with "Having Fun" in his 4th Gen at the trail head. We aired down and waited to see if anyone else would show up and departed at 8:30 am up the trail. Due to this winter, the trail seemed a little more loose heading up to the hill climb. We stopped at the right turn to the off camber hill climb and looked at the options. I made my decision I would take the usual path even though it was more rutted. Pointed it up and went with a little spotting and was through. Next up was "Having Fun", I spotted him and he was through with no issues as well. After that, pretty easy and we were at the top about 10:00 am.

Looking into new tires

It is time to start looking into new tires. I have had the Toyo MT's in LT285/75R17 (34.1X11.6) since I put the lift on at about 1,500 miles. They have been great tires on the trail and no real complaints for the road. Only complaint is the weight when it comes to getting the spare into rotation.

I have been researching the tires listed below and and considering the Cooper SST Pro and Nitto Ridge Grapler. Oh, believe me, I am all aware about fender bite, BMC, etc. I have beat, pounded, cut and am now looking into cutting the fender flares up to get these in there.

My question is to those who have run these, how have they performed, likes, dislikes.

  1. BF Goodrich Mud Terrain T/A KM2 - 35X12.5R17 (34.8X12.5) @ 67#
  2. Goodyear WranglerMT/R w/ Kevlar - 35X12.5R17 (34.8X12.5)
  3. Cooper Discovery SST Pro - LT315/70R17 (34.57X12.6) @ 66#
  4. Nitto Ridge Grappler - 35X12.5R17 (34.76X12.6) @ 65#
  5. General Grabber X3 - LT315/70R17 (34.4X12.7)
  6. Toyo Open Country MT - LT315/70R17 (34.6X12.7) @ 78#
  7. Goodyear Wrangler MT/R w/ Kevlar - LT315/70R17 (34.7X12.7)

Thanks

Thanks

since you didn't ask about 35x12.5R17 Trail grapplers at 34.84x13.19... :fencing: FYI, I did have to add fat spacers on the rears to clear the resis. They are heavy a a mo-fo too. With the beadlocks I think each corner is somewhere around 130lbs...
