RockAuto AAE new steering rack

Didn't want to hijack twalk's thread. As per kernel.panik's post about this rack, I immediately ordered one. $260 shipped. Looks good to me. Was curious if you folks that have purchased the Safari rack, does this look the same?

see thread - sunk the 4runner x 2. Anyway, it sprung a leak and the bushings needed to be done badly. The passenger's side boot was shredded after removing form the pit. Was hoping I could get around replacing the whole rack but to no avail. Just decided to do the entire mess (new tie-rod ends, LBJ's, poly rack, sway bar and end link bushings.

according to Rock Auto and AAE, they are NEW not reman'd which was the reason for my original post. They are supposed to be "better" than factory. Which Safari Ltd claims their rack has brass bushings or something instead of the plastic ones the factory racks had. So does AAE. (don't quote me on this, I don't remember the specifics of what they were talking about).


At $260 shipped, that's cheaper than most reman'd racks.

I'm subscribing to this! I've been eying the Safari rack for awhile, but if this is pretty much the same thing for $260, I'm sold. Oh, and don't forget that Rock Auto discount codes are very easily found. I think they're for 5 percent off.
 
PLEASE add a link for this as I dont see it, did you have to send you old rack? i am just about to buy a junk yard rack for $100 but that one looks pretty nice
 
looks new to me + no core charge. It does have bushings but I had already ordered the ES poly set from wheelers prior to ordering this so won't be needing them anyway. Hopefully will be installing within the next week or two.
 
no one bought and installed this yet? if you do get one please post pics of what it looks like, it looks like bare metal and would need paint. lemme know
 
so i have the safari rack, and it came in a big rectangle box, stapled at both ends, inside was a sheet of cardboard that looks very much like what you have there, only yours has a lot more shrink wrap around it, and shiny silvery clamps on the boots, where mine has just black or dark clamps on the boots... leads me to believe that the safari rack has the brass bushings and the rockauto only has the facotry OE nylon bushings. again this is just a theory and sense i have not seen a rockauto rack in persona nor have i seen the guts of the two side by side i can not be for sure, and i only speculate. if how ever they both are the exsact same rack i will be remorseful that i spent $250 more for two sticker...
 
I've got a Safari LTD rack as well; it looks exactly the same as the kid said above.

For what it's worth, I've had it for about 3 to 4 months now and it's fantastic.

what differences did you notice between new and old?

Mine leaks right at the top where the steering shaft is, I wonder if a new one would fix this issue?
 
Off the bat the new one has been smoother. I've still got shimmy issues, but I would say that this has reduced them by about 50%. Even when the steering rack guide is tightened, it is smoother.
 
I want to know more about this rack as well as I was planning on ordering a Safari rack in the next few weeks. Anyone else have any info/experience with this rack from rock auto? please chime in
 
I'm going to be installing the rack next Sunday. I will post pics and feedback once completed. I sure it will work great, especially since I'm installing new outers, LBJ's and poly bushings on everything. Only time will tell beyond that. From what I've seen on this thread so far, I'm leaning towards the fact that this is the same rack as Safari's. It's made by the same company (Atlantic Automotive Engineering). I'd prefer not to tear it apart and check the guts. One question for the Safari rack owners. Did yours come with new bushings installed except for the large D shaped mounting bushing? -
 
Yes but I took those out and put in my poly bushings. Are you gonna do poly bushings for your lower control arms too?

I didn't think about that. I do have a set of upper and lower ES control arm bushings sitting in the garage. I'd prefer not to unless I have to. That does not look like a fun job. Do you recommend that I do?
