RockAuto AAE new steering rack

No, outter tie rods are separate. What I am saying is that there is no need to order other parts, like adjustment nuts... That stuff came on the rack from safari...

Brand new rack. It's so tight compared to the one on there now I can't wait to get it on.
First thing I noticed is that it has the different cap on it.
Will pull it off to see if it is brass inside.

Hurry up and get it installed! Im really curious to see your impressions with this rack compared to the original. What was wrong with your rack, other than the leak? Issues with horizontal play or knocking?
 
My current rack is leaking and there is play on the driver side as well.
Still haven't decided what I am gonna do with my factory rack

I am curious if you find the brass inside or not! I may be doing some work on my front end and may choose to add a new steering rack for good measure.
 
For all the DIYs out there, I don't think there is one for a full rack replacement. Take a couple of pics when you are done.

I couldn't get anyone to take my factory rack (although I didn't try too hard). Folks wouldn't even take it for free. Are you going to leave the installed rubber bushings or swap them with the polys? 2 things I've ran across with the AAE rack. If you are replacing the outer tie-rods (which I assume you are) with OEM parts, Toyota does not supply the adjustment bolt as aftermarket ones do. Also, it seems Toyota puts a locktite coating on the threads prior to shipping. I ordered mine from Camelback. The other issue is to be very careful with the spline placement on the rack during install (duh). Something strange happened with mine. My friend actually installed the rack when I wasn't there (he's the experienced and thorough mechanic, not me) and something went awry. He's done this stuff before and has been completely baffled by the outcome. Almost seems like the splines on the rack were turned somewhat before install. We counted the tie rod threads and the driver's side was fine. Passenger's side not so much. Either way, the alignment shop ran out of threads trying to get the passenger side toe in. Gotta go back and do some adjusting. For what it's worth, the steering feels much tighter and nothings leaking. So far, the AAE rack seems fine for $250 + poly bushings (other than install error). A good DIY would be nice, but that's not really my dept. BigFishAllDay set's the bar pretty high on that one.

most are talking about an adjustment bolt on the tie rod. what bolt? spline placement? you mean where the column attaches to?

Yes, the alignment jamb bolt that goes on the outer tie-rod that butts up against the rack. Toyota does not ship them with new tie-rods. They assume you'll use the old ones. That didn't work in my case. Splines that come out of the new steering rack where the column attaches is also what I'm talking about. Again, I don't know exactly what happened. The steering wheel was set level and ratchet strapped to the brake pedal prior to install and everything seemed perfect. We were able to loosen the Yolk (for lack of better term) on the steering column and push it up and turn the column without removing the rack. Apparently it wasn't enough. We're still a few splines off. Not fun but stuff happens -

I had just put poly bushings in my old rack a couple months ago so I do plan to use those in the new rack. As well as the new outer tie rods I replaced as well. Heck I even have newer inner tie rods. I think I may return them dunno yet.
