Yep....that's old news with the rust issue. Silicone on the joints seems to be the solution....Still a deal.

They came up with a solutions for that rust water issue. They give you these rubber sleeves that seal up the places where the rack has the openings... Should work out just fine

Rola Rack Modification
I love my Rola Rack, but it is 200% better after a little modification... I felt the rack was too short, so I purchased an extension. But, with one extension the front of the rack ran right over my sunroof. So, I bought a second extension and then cut off about 8" and the fit was perfect. The rack lines up with the slope of my windshield and extends all the way to my Gobi ladder.
I didn't like the way the basket bars inhibited my sunroof access, so I took a grinder to them. I then welded end caps on to prevent water from getting in. The sky is now completely unobstructed from the driver's seat.
One of the things I didn't like about the rack was how high it sat on the factory roof rails. I followed another T4R member suggestion and built brackets out of angle brackets from Home Depot. The first bracket moved the Rola Rack to about 1.5" off the roof. This was still a bit too high, so I trimmed down a little more and it now sits only 0.75" off the roof. Perfect!!!
One last modification that I made (but don't have a photo tonight) , was adding support brackets to the front of the rack. The brackets are held next to the sunroof using exterior double-stick tape. Not only did they cut down vibration, but I now feel way more comfortable carrying my canoe or four 4x8 sheets of MDF.
