Rolling_Thunder's Build Thread

Well - looks like I'll be pulling the transmission back out at some point - the problem ended up being 1st gear synchro - the transmission still grinds in 1st but will engage properly if i shift into 1st when the vehicle is still moving -

From what research I've done the R150F shares its internals from the AX15 and other transmissions from the same years so - finding synchros shouldn't be too difficult -

I can live with it for now but overall I am really happy with the swap - makes driving fun again

So new little project --- was thinking about a spare tire mount -

I want to keep the factory rear bumper but want to run a aux tank in the future... was thinking of making an internal spare tire mount - anyone done it?

Was playing with a CAD program and came up with something like this --- opinions?

i agree theres already little cargo space, plus is you upgrade your tires past 33s they won't fit, i'd say something like a hitch mount or a swinging arm off the bumper

Well - not too much to report lately - I ended up lifting the front of my 4R to match the rear - just 2" all around - sits level and semi-pretty...

Got an alignment and all that fun stuff --- been dreading pulling the R150 out to rebuild it all for a 1st gear synchro - so I scored a "spare" transmission I will be swapping in while I rebuild the one in the car currently... I figure a spare is never a bad thing.

I also have just been looking at ideas here and there - nothing else to note currently --- just another day in paradise.

Pulled the 5-speed back out today and swapped over the bellhousing and associated parts to the *new* R-150 and got it all back in and test drove it - seems that the replacement trans dives just fine with no problems.... so thats a load off my mind-

A side note - I have had a slight banging as i drove around and it was annoying the crap out of me... found that in my fury to do the swap I threw the 4x4 wiring plug with the bracket on top of the transfer case... the bracket was vibrating against the case.... I secured it with the T-case to trans mounting bolt it's supposed to use

Overall it took me about 3 hours.... in my freezing garage.

Well here we are again....

Not much new going on with the 4Runner... we got some snow here in DC so I decided to finally swap the wheels/tires over... I had summer style tires that were almost bald - 235 series... so went to a 265/75/16 on some simple wheels I picked up a while back... drives a lot better in the snow now.

Transmission swap seems to be 100% solid - no issues in the past 1500+ miles.

I noticed some oil on the rear of the engine when I was under there looking at stuff - looks like valve covers so I ordered some gaskets and will be doing that fun little project in the next couple weeks.

I scored a E-locker rear end for a 4runner as well... was local(ish) and I got what I consider a good deal - housing and a 4.30 e-locker... which doesnt match the 4.10s in my rig now... so looking to trade across for it...

In the mean time I am just spending most of my free time working on my Challenger getting it ready to get sent out for paint -

Also - found out i'll be moving at the end of Feb to another house with a larger garage! :guitar3:

Well just to finish up on this thread - I had been chasing an issue with the 4x4 not being functional nor my cruise control.

Finally got around to figuring them both out -

Cruise control needed another wire spliced in for the clutch / brake interruption switches. I had disconnected the white/red wire to connect the interruption switches but they needed to be "Y"ed together to allow the PCM to think the truck was in drive.

The 4x4 was a mess - I went through many times of looking around and scratching my head - testing each switch, wiring, etc etc -- I ended up finding no voltage on the ADD VSVs - so I started all over again and verified all connectors and wiring - still no voltage. So I stepped back and looked around at a wiring manual - had 12v at the 4x4 fuse, and I bypassed the ADD position switch and the 4x4 dash light came on - so that told me the switches worked and were connected correctly.

So tracing it all out - either the black/yellow wire was not carrying 12v to the ADD relay - or the relay wasnt sending 12v to the VSVs.... So I crawled under the dash and removed the blower motor - and saw... NO ADD RELAY. I had (stupidly) believed everyone else who did a swap saying the relay was present... it wasnt. So I wired in a typical Bosch relay and all of a sudden the planets aligned and my 4x4 functions!

Next on the list is to start tackling the E-locker now that the 4x4 functions.
