Rubbing like a fat chick in corduroy pants

It's funny cause I have told so many people to trim their fenders, pound the pinch weld, etc...

My whole plan was to run 285's and 2" of lift. I thought I was manly enough to do this, but apparently not. I am having some difficulties.

I've literally cut the entire pinch weld off, pounded the S*** out of the wheel well, trimmed the fender flares... I'm about to take my cut off wheel to the fender itself. I'm also rubbing on the freaking washer fluid container in the front!!:bash:

I know there are guys running 285's with 2" of lift here without tubbing their firewall. Can anyone else chime in to how much, or what they did special? I am rubbing on road, so I can't even imagine what it feels like offroad.

I am running FZJ80 rims... and well... 1.5" wheel spacers... I know the spacers are killing me but I love the stance....

Rubbing on road with 2" lift??? Those wheel spacers are killing you then for sure...I had 285s on my stock suspension for awhile before I traded fonerunner. It rubbed a little when turning into driveways lol but I think a 2" lift would have completely eliminated that problem.

Backspacing is 4.5"....

I have Icon's in the front with factory setting ~2". I don't have the measurement right now but I will.

Yes I have a limited so its got the flares, but its not rubbing on them, its rubbing on the wheel well where the pinch weld would be.

I am certain those wheel spacers are killing me but............ I swears I seen people running this same setup. Maybe not

Simple test. Remove the spacers and see what rubs.

If you want the looks :violin:, then you will have to deal with your girl wearing corduroys.

Its got to be the wheel spacers. Esp if your Lc wheels are 8" wide. Plus expect a little rubbing here and there. Imo if its rubbing a little plastic then who cares. You should have no issues with getting those to clear. There should be no reason to have to smash the firewall in with 33's unless you have some weird deal wit your wheels. I have 8" wide wheels with 3.75" back spacing, but say you have 8" wide wheels with 4.5" bs and 1.75" wheel spacers. That means the outside of your tire is almost 1" further out than mine.

Crank the Icons up another 1/2" and see if it helps. I have the Toytec adjustables with the threaded Biltseins. 22.5" from center of the hub to the bottom of the fender.
I have one spot rubbing when the steering wheel is cranked all the way to either side when I hit a bump. Mine only rubs in one spot because I still have the running boards on mine.

More lift from cranking your C/Os won't do a dang thing. As soon as you stuff a tire it'll be the same situation. Either get a body lift, keep pounding, or #1 I would try it minus the spacers.

Increasing the height might help for road cruising but as soon as you start stuffing tires the rub will be back.

A body lift will do the same as suspension. A BL will minimize rubbing at full stuff on the top of the inner fenders.

Personally if you are going to wheel and want bigger tires, they need to fit without any lift. A good suspension (lifted or stock) should flex to the bumpstops. Allowing clearance for oversize tires is needed. The need to cut and tub for the lower areas and either cut the tops or raise the body. One alternative to eliminating the rubbing when stuffed (other than cutting or a bodylift) is to extend your bumpstops. This will limit the travel.

I think you are into more cutting and tubing and/or decrease wheel backspacing. The 8" wheel pushes the outside edge out, the slightly less BS moves it out further and then of course the wheel spacer, further still.

You could go to a smaller tire too.

So I just took the 1.5" wheel spacers off for the time being, and no more rubbing. Haven't been offroad since. Probably going out on a trip in the next few weeks though.

I'll probably get a 1" body lift and put the spacers back on afterwards.

Pinch weld was completely removed with a sawszall, cut off wheel, grinder and hammer. I had to trim the plastic around the windsheild wiper fluid holder on the passenger side as well, and cranked up my Icon's a 1/2"

OK another update. I jacked up the coilovers about 3/4" (4 turns) and put on 1" wheel spacers. (Had these laying around too), and no rubbage so far. I am stoked.

As soon as you compress the suspension its going to hit again. You need to be very carefull trimming the pinch weld. I strongly urge people to just beat it to the side rather than cut it off. You need to check for leaks if you cut it off. You should try and run as little lift as possible, the ride will be much nicer. Consider your situation. You cranked those 3/4" extra. Those springs are either 600 lb per in. or 650 lb per in. You put around 450 lb of extra preload. Per side. that can really effect the ride. Just be honest with your self. If its riding rough its too high.

a body lift will help you.

and one more thing. Why are you so set on running wheel spacers. If the tires dont rub with them then why go through the hassle of having them on there?

Well I did the same thing I did with my last 4Runner with 35's and just cut the pinch weld and slammed the rest over. I didn't have any leaks, but I'll keep my eye out.

4 turns = 1/4" preload ring movement. With the ARB bumper and soon to be winch, the truck feels perfect right now. I think you think I cranked the sucker 3/4" down though :) It ended up giving me 3/4" of a lift... or only 150 lbs effective preload.

Believe me, if they start rubbing then I'll be pissed and take them off. I am set on wheel spacers because I like the extra width for handling, and of course looks. I ran 1.5" spacers on my last truck and got used to it I guess... not having them on makes it look too sucked in, even with a 4.5" backspaced 16x8 rim.

I drove them on a stupid little dirt road with big pot holes and no rubbage, we'll see when I really put them to the test though.

I thought you mean 3/4" of threads ! Hey was your old 4runner silver, super tall with a trailmaster lift and 35's. Your location reminds me of some old threads. But the username doesnt ring a bell.
