Safari snorkel on a 5th gen?

Look, this is self-serving on my part. I wanted a snorkel, and in a tit for tat my truck is being used for some commercials as a picture vehicle, and I'm also paying Safari for the snorkel. It'll be replaced by the production unit when the first batch ships. The reason I wanted a Safari snorkel is that ARB, and their sub-brands, have integrity and amazing warranties. I was NOT going to drill huge holes in my 43K dollar truck for a product who's customer service rep in China can barely string a coherent sentence together when he's sending an email explaining why my chicom snorkel broke.

I've been pestering ARB for this snorkel since April, and worked a deal where they benefit from a vehicle that's routinely driving a thousand miles every few weeks for my work (I work in film production mostly now, in remote areas usually. Product design was just 3 years of a detour I would rather take back.

My goal was to prod this along, I don't claim to have influenced it whatsoever. My truck is purely a test mule, with the benefit of me getting a snorkel 3-4 months before everyone else, ARB gets some engineering results, and I get a snorkel, win win.



Look I understand your belief that that makes a difference, but it doesn't. 20-40 people do not indicate a MARKET interest. They represent a fringe corner case. Again likely these molds cost at a minimum 100K, that means to break even they'd have to sell 200 units in the fantasy land that precluded things like material costs, R&D time, packaging, shipping, etc.

Also again do you think Safari is just screwing with us for fun? Have you considered the fact that their engineers said "based on engine requirements, body shape, etc, this is the shape we're confident of handling the design specs needed!"

Would I have loved a thinner model? Sure. But it's a functional upgrade.

Wraith, I don't mean to make an antagonist out of you, like some bizzaro world version of that scene from Step Brothers, "Did we just become enemies?" "YUUUUUP!"

But if a snorkel isn't right for you it's not right for you, but Safari builds accessories for vehicles that go out to life or death places in Australia, tougher places then we'll ever put our trucks through. To imply they are lazy isn't just misinformed it's insulting.

Safari is doing us a solid here. I trust them enough to put 12 holes in a perfectly nice truck.

Speaking for experience most of the engineers Ive dealt with the past 16yrs in the oil industry are smart dumb muthas... Have absolutely zero common sense. That's speaking from experience dealing with lazy engineers in the oil industry. I've seen million dollar projects that's worthless because they didn't walk the shit out in the field. Or fail to take account the opinions of people that's been in the field for 20+years.

But funny thing is you; yourself is saying exactly what I'm saying. Safari doesn't see our platform as a profitable enough to get our own design. But we have to share it with another platform.

But that's why Im adamant about them getting us form and functional snorkel. ARB and Safari is pretty end all in the snorkel game for me. I've been wanting one before I even bought my 4runner.

So I'm done arguing with you... I know your stand and you know where I stand. DONE!!!

It's about a half inch thinner and if I had to guess it's likely so that they can use these on Diesel and Gas vehicles and share one product.

Dude, I'll ask on the 6th (just confirmed that's when I'll be at the ARB vehicle bay for the work). But I haven't heard or asked about the 4th gen.

You 4th gen guys have a legit case to be whiny on that front.

Oh I understand its a helpful upgrade. Last time I checked my travel log I've got 15,246 miles "off-road" with no snorkel on the 4Runner. (Ya...I document everything:nerd A lot of that is west Texas/Mexico dirt roads. I just want to see someone use that snorkel...in water. In the end, I could care less whether someone has one or not, I just enjoy people getting out there, putting things to the test, and having an adventure. Oh and I've been to Oregon a several times, dusty yes...snorkel dusty...I've never needed a snorkel for dust.

Update!

Okay so I went up to Renton yesterday, and we did the install. First off, it took longer than expected because no documentation by Safari was provided to ARB. Also ARB is moving their shop, so they had to run some tools from one location to the next.

Word of advice, if you're doing the install have a strong stomach, if not then let someone else do it and DO NOT WATCH THE PROCESS. It's painful and what results is great at the end, but you'll see some ugliness, i.e big holes, lots of touch up paint. Once you commit you can NEVER revert, so just think of it like pouring cement over something, just ignore what's under there and appreciate the house on top of said cement.

Anyways this is the ABS 3D Printed version, which they say is damn near as strong as the final piece, just a tiny bit heavier, and painted UV protected black vs injection molded.

In terms of driving, I need to get a photo from the driver's seat, but you never see the actual tube behind the A Pillar, you'll see the snorkel inlet a little, so it doesn't mess with visibility. It is fun to put it in sports mode and manually shift it off a starting line, because you can definitely hear the inlet sucking air in.

In terms of performance ARB/Safari says you're likely to see 2-5hp gained. I didn't feel anything different, but interestingly enough my MPG in similar weather/temp going up to Renton was about 14.5mpg (yes I know it's shitty, it's also an expedition style vehicle), whereas on the way back I was getting 15.8-15.9. So it's a little better interestingly enough. Also I drove back through the rain, ARB said I could spin the intake around if it was torrential, but it's designed not to need anything done to it. Which is important in the PNW.

These mods are for longevity of the vehicle in shitty conditions. A snorkel, Y-pipe, etc will never make your 4Runner a Ford Raptor, it's not going to happen, quit trying to make it happen, Gretchen!

That said it's pretty awesome. I'd be happy to field questions if you have them.

I have to be the first one to say that frontal shot doesn't make it look as bad as the first version. The first one looked HUGE!!!

And a snorkel and a y pipe will make your 4runner better than a raptor. You can now go where a raptor cant...

Actually the truck is semi-sideways on a hill, i just horizontally aligned the photo. Notice the wall behind the truck. Straight on a flat surface the camber is set normal.
