Safari snorkel on a 5th gen?

As there is no viable alternative, it's pretty moot to speculate or even argue over the production timeline of the Safari snorkel. But if people are impatient and desperate due to a planned river crossing or some biblical event in the coming weeks, no one's stopping them from using a sawzall, duck tape and PVC pipe for the same effect albeit in a ghettofab way...just be sure to post pics.

The reality is Safari makes the most dependable snorkels out there. The 4runner is a very niche platform in the grand scheme of things vs the Prado 150, and the fact that we're getting a snorkel is awesome. It's worth the wait, better built than the FTS versions, and has the backing of a company that's been doing it for a lot longer than anyone else.

Again I can't go into the specific schedule, but I don't think you'll be hearing the "2 months" repeated ad nauseum again and again.

The plan is they're going to build the tooling, run a single molded snorkel, that snorkel and an engineer fly over from Australia, verify the mold is correct based on it fitting properly on my vehicle. If that happens, I get a final snorkel and they go back and start making them in quantity for you guys to finally stop *****ing about and purchase.

The fact that ARB/Safari has let me document the process, and photograph a product for what will be likely a whole year, is a hell of a lot better than ARB/Safari keeping everyone in the dark. So for that fact I'm very lucky and fortunate.

Coincidentally I just got an email from ARB and while I can't get into specific schedules, I can re-assure you this will come out this year, and sometime soon I'll be heading back up to Renton for a test fitting with the actual injection molded version.

Assuming that goes well, they'll begin producing them and we'll see who here has the testicular fortitude to actually put their money where their mouths are and drill some huge holes in their fenders.

Drilling holes in my fenders ? NOt a problem here...... I do that when I'm bored, just so I can stuff bolts in them afterward.

I'm sorry Safari isn't working on your schedule, Jono.

Until then I'm trying to answer questions and provide photos rather than EVERYONE being left in the dark. I have admittedly a little more access to floating questions to ARB/Safari, but even I'm chomping at the bit to replace my 3D Printed version with the stronger injection molded production model.

I know the designs are done, validated, but it's not up to me when they tool up and start making them. As I've said before I carry more risk here than ANYONE else involved, since if the product never comes out I'm stuck with a snorkel that could give up the ghost and leave me with a huge repair bill.

Believe me, I'm only bitter cause you have one and I don't. I have full intentions of drilling gaping holes and fully testing the capabilities of this unit once it is available.

People can be bitter all they want. I took, and am still taking, a huge risk. Plus it's not like this was a free ride. ARB had me provide weekly MPG information.

Also given how electronics heavy the 4Runner is, even ARB/Safari doesn't advise you to take the 4Runner deeper than say the door handles due to the location of the ECUs.

Ha, drilling a hole in the only body panel on my truck that doesn't have some sort of damage is the easy part. It's the water crossing where a snorkel is actually needed that I'll probably chicken out on!!!

Safari Snorkel profile

My concern, when it comes out, is the profile from the fender. My goal is to get the ARB bull bar and get the tubes that bolt to the bull bar and travel along side the fender well and attach to the rock rails. I wonder if they will clear the snorkel without coming off the fender too far? Similar to picture.

Dunno, most 4Runners aren't intended to run both setups, you may have to get into some custom fab.

TRD intake in combination W/ snorkel

As I would like to make any modification possible to increase MPG/power on my 4runner I am interested if I could use the safari snorkel in conjunction with an aftermarket intake such as the TRD intake or the AFE intake. My thinking is that if the Safari acts as a RAM and these aftermarket intakes add additional airflow it could be quite the combo? My understanding is that both these intakes go in the same hole as the stock unit so it should work, at least in theory. I suppose that its hard to say with out the production model being on the market. I am interested in your thoughts. Thank you!

While in theory it sounds cool, you would see absolutely zero horsepower benefit. Think about it, you're running 6 feet of intake piping through multiple bends and hoping to see a ram air effect? And looking at spending $600+ And cutting holes in your fender to gain 2hp? Not gonna work :sorry:

Actually the current design does add 3-4hp in theory, however keep in mind there is ZERO point or gained advantage adding a CAI into the mix. The ECU/Engine will not allow more than a certain amount of additional air into the engine, so all the CAI becomes at that point is a sound effects box. So frankly if you get a CAI you're not going to gain anything adding a snorkel. If you add the Safari snorkel you're not going to gain anything by adding the CAI.

I'll let you know when I head up to ARB in november, which is the current plan. There may be an announcement at SEMA about a schedule.

Current plan is I go up to ARB for a final validation fitting with an injection molded version, if that drops in fine without any tweaks they can run it for mass production.

I'm assured it WILL happen, but as you can see things take a while. Trust me my prototype is definitely showing some wear.
