Safari snorkel on a 5th gen?

Not to derail this thread with a bunch of bumper talk, but I'll never understand why people continue to install UHF/VHF antennas so close to the engine like that on a bull bar. I've always installed them in the rear (furthest point from all the electrical interference of the engine), yet I always see mounting points on the front.

Can someone explain that one to me?

FWIW - fiber reinforced plastic is better at pretty much everything than non fiber reinforced plastic. Fiberglass composite material properties are a function of the fiber used and the plastic used. Not all plastics are created equal. The range is nearly infinite. ABS can be used with fiberglass for example. I've done a fair amount of work with FRP composites. The most important fact is that FRP will always be lighter for the same strength or stronger for the same weight. It's the same principle as concrete with or without rebar.

Rotomolded plastic is inexpensive. And may be perfectly adequate for the task. Fiberglass is significantly more expensive to produce and may not work with the wrong plastic or the wrong fiber choice. It's also significantly more sensitive to manufacturing errors. Usually cheap fiberglass is polyester resin plastics that are not nearly as strong or tough as vinylester or epoxy resins. Cheap fiberglass would also be less likely to use proper uv resistant resins. Just like cheap plastic parts would become brittle over time.

My goal is just to clear up any misconception that rotomolded plastic holds any inherent advantage over fiberglass reinforced plastics. The only real advantage is that it's cheap to produce. The rest is the result of material choices in which resin and fiber to use.

My vote is running it over with progressively larger vehicles until it gives up. Would be a pretty entertaining video!

When you talk to the ARB rep can you please ask about the 4th gen Snorkel? I know they were developing the 5th and 4th gen 4runners in tandem as there is one 4th gen guy that has one (Toyota 4wd mag owner I believe).

If you can ask I would appreciate it!

The new Raptor is so much of a better deal than the Tacoma TRD Pro it isn't even a contest.

Again the Ranger is the current vehicle to beat right now, so Safari has their full weight, along with ARB's products, supporting it.

Yes, what vehicles are available in other markets are great and there usually is a reliability and durability factor built in. This is usually not the case in the American market. Unfortunately, the American market has demanded creature comforts, tech and road manners over function and durability, hence why some of us are always drooling over what we cannot have here. Too many people are concerned about "Flash" and looks and could care less about long term reliability.

I do not want to side track this thread with a sidebar discussion, so bring on that snorkel, I have a end of year bonus ready to blow unnecessary items for my 4Runner!

Shouldn't you be comparing a Raptor to a Tundra and NOT a Tacoma? I mean seriously. The Ranger yes and that's an easier comparison to swallow.

As to Ford making 'Better' vehicles. Well, I'm not entirely persuaded that this is a correct statement coming from someone who has had Fords and from friends who currently own Fords.
