Safari snorkel on a 5th gen?

It really boils down to the business. If the ARB snorkel breaks and you have these predrilled holes, you're forced to buy another ARB snorkel. You can't just replace the A Pillar like you can replace the fender.

For many, the snorkel will stay with the truck forever. That might not even be a problem.

The only way you'll damage your pillar is impacting your snorkel and pillar and tape won't prevent that.

What Americans call heavy duty overlanding the aussies call light daily driving.

Follow the instructions, guys. They aren't having you drill holes for shits and giggles. Full stop.

I think you quoted the wrong person. My main point was that once holes are drilled into the pillar, the pillar can't be replaced as easy as a fender. You're stuck with having to buy another ARB snorkel to fill those holes.

If buying another ARB snorkel isn't an option, you'll need to have the holes filled and repaint that whole side of the truck (that pillar is one single piece all the way to the rear quarter panel).

ARB says you need to drill but I'm sure some strong double-sided tape will work. Same as frontrunner saying that frontrunner racks will need frontrunner specific attachments. You can go to a hardware store, buy a bolt and locking nut, and make anything fit the frontrunner rack just fine (8mm slides into the slots).

I feel the same way, I don't think it is nit-picky. I think it is a regional thing, I would be wary of drilling holes in my a-pillar for two reasons, first being rust and the second being windshield installers. Any nicks or dings around that area turn into a cancerous mess here. You can't see those holes to treat it if shit goes south.

The fender though hah have a hay day easily replaceable.

And I think you're forgetting I've lived with multiple revisions of this product for over a year. You can't use another snorkel anyways since the hole is in a different position and BIGGER than if you swapped to or from an FTS, Prado 150, etc.

The Pillar holes provide structural support. VHB tape is strong at resisting pulling, but not shearing forces, which the pillar needs to protect against.

Come on guys, you don't even have the snorkels in hand and you're already second guessing the design? I wonder if ARB should have just built some cosmetic stick on snorkels the way some of you are talking.

I have 3 extra holes in my fender, covered up by the snorkel, because we've figured out where the holes worked and what needed to be relocated. I sincerely suggest you just follow the instructions. The hole placement on the fender and A-pillar are there for very specific reasons. This, the gen 2 taco, and gen 3 taco, are the first of their snorkels completely modeled and stress tested in the computer AND on test mule vehicles.

I've had my windshield replaced twice while having the snorkel. I asked the installers and they said it wasn't at all an issue.

Secondly you won't develop rust. A year later and mine looks absolutely fine and I deal with more rain in a year than most.

Salt and mag-chloride not rain. ;): If it wasn't a concern I would keep my mouth shut :biggrin1:

That's why I said it being a "regional" thing.

VHB is tough stuff I bet money it would peel from the snorkel before it ever peeled from the paint. I think that would be more of the issue in regards to two-sided tape.

I have considered installing one, probably will at some point in time. It's like anything you weig the pros and cons, there is always going to be something to deal with.

It's not a regional thing, they also tested the snorkel in the east coast as well on the tacomas.

You put some touchup paint inside the holes, then you pound plastic rivnuts in place that create a watertight seal, the screws bite into those rivnuts and hold the pillar plate in place.

I can't tell what was worse, the posts before the snorkel was finally shipping, or the posts after.

Lol :D

I think it should draw air from inside the cab, so when I eat a fat bowl of chili the extra methane will provide supercharger type boost :bounce:

This guy went in for a snorkel...

The double sided tape will go on the ARB bracket which bolts to the snorkel.

This thread is funny. There are about 50 ways to do something. There is never one perfect solution for everyone. I appreciate people who use their heads and come to their own conclusions and solutions. It's a free country for the time being....

I have had Snorkel on my 4th Gen for nearly 10 years and drive every day in Canada which has 4 month snow covered roads with allot of salt and other reagents city puts on the road. I used black outdoor non-mold silicone in A-Pillar holes when was putting plastic inserts. So fat it looks good.

Awesome! Thanks for the info... May actually be something I will consider in the future! I figured it'd be all kinds of mods under the hood!

lol I have read a lot of stupid sh!t and I don't think using a VHB to fasten something you don't want to drill is a bad idea. Of course, some stupid fk at one point in time thought the world was flat until someone else thought otherwise and tried something different. :moon: :flipoff: :biggrin1:

FYI I only posted that to lighten the mood, it wasn't directed at anyone in particular..

I haven't installed a snorkel before. I also listen to engineers and honestly, I think ARB really cares and designs products for the long haul.

Back to the popcorn fellas. :eyebrows:

Not to stray into a crazy debate but engineers designed Takata airbags, just saying ;): :)

Anyone hooked one on a limb? How did it fair?

True.

In the end...how many 5th gen owners wheel hard enough to make that an actual issue? :preggers:

I know I won't! Once these 5th gen trucks get down to worth 10k or less...then you'll see SAS more common and maybe hard use with the snorkels. I believe lawndart when he says...this is a small market.

I think myself and one other 5th gen in the next town are the only in a 100 mile radius that has modified their trucks beyond window tint and n fab steps. No offense to locals...but all I see are stock runners in my area and yeah, wheeling a 40k truck in the PNW is hazardous to the trucks body work! Lol
