Safari snorkel on a 5th gen?

SAS will never be common until the components and time to make it cheap actually become cheap. SAS'ing a FJC is still massively expensive, and until I see a SAS'd 5th gen go and run the rubicon hard, and not just be forum wank material in a parking lot or on a lift, I'll hold on to that belief.

I broke both of my prototype snorkels from repeated and hard use, albeit they were 3D printed, it's still the first time ARB's prototypes have been damaged during testing.

Look, it's not my damn truck, so install the snorkel however you guys want. I mean what do I know, not like I've dealt with 3 revisions of this product for the past 14 months or anything. I wish I'd known we had so many other testers all up in here as I could have avoided all the headache of listening to the whining.

Lastly, any good body shop could spot weld the holes in the A-Pillar and grind/repaint, if one day you say, "you know the heavy burden of having a snorkel is just too much for me to bear, and I must revert it."

It's three holes about 8-10mm. As long as you follow the template, and aren't a total mouth breathing developmentally challenged human being, you should be able to easily drill the holes per spec to install some self sealing rivnuts.

Shocking, I know.

ETA: Also since here's some factual information based on having the snorkel in front of me...pillar lights should fit, at least the CBI bracket one should.

I'm with you. I've done a SAS before and all the parts and ground work have been done enough to make it a cheap and viable option. It won't be this way for the FJC or a 5th gen due to the costs of the trucks and complexity of the conversation as well. Plenty of other cheap trucks to do this with and have a better platform to start with.

I believe you and would trust your experience. Did you hit things to destroy the other snorkels or was this just driving forces? I mean....are you running places like TSF, golden dale, moon rocks or other tight places here or was it frame/body flex that ripped them apart?

It all adds up. The 2nd prototype has a golfball sized crater in it that I had to epoxy back together.

When I got my dual swing arm bumper, and went out to CBI to get it, the screws that connect the A-pillar bracket into the snorkel completely stripped out. On the production unit there's brass threads molded into the snorkel body. On the printed test units it's just a screw threaded into plastic. Those stripped out and my snorkel was vibrating in the wind at about 70mph somewhere in SE idaho. So there's me with gaffer tape holding my prototype on to my window/A-pillar.

I feel I can talk about it now because we're approaching the release, but this was right around the time ARB was really unsure about if the snorkel would ever come out. So it had me spooked for sure.

Good, thanks for explaining it out. This was what I was thinking and I know you actually use your the truck off-road so it holds water. I know the body and frame move a lot, hitting it is a rare event, I've not been in a situation where I would smack my a pillar but have come close to hitting my roof line plenty of times. The snorkel would add to that danger so securing it would be important to an owner and damage is going to suck but those putting one on your truck....your far into it at this point, drilling would be least of my worries.

Again I don't and won't wheel my truck hard enough to care and I'm not adding a snorkel either..just random thoughts from someone who has been on hard trials with built rigs.

We just filmed a video on saturday where I drove my truck up on to a Safari snorkel for the Gen 3 tacoma. I don't want to spoil it but it certainly deforms but doesn't snap or break. And I bet with a heat gun and some time you could get it to return to shape. And my truck is 6500+lbs.

lol Well get used to it I have been an alpha/beta tester of a major 3d package (the one that bought all of them up) for a year shy of a decade, the slanderous crap I read and hear every single release about what people think they know about it, how screwed up everything is, and what has been done in the last dev cycle, lol this is kindergarten! That is just the nature of that part of business. Beta testing on a truck, too expensive for my budget, even though I a put in a metric crapton on software, it has a return far greater than expenditure.

Don't get me wrong, I do appreciate you throwing out what you've learned.

I know I keep bringing up the Safari Snorkel I have on my 1st Gen Tacoma. However, FWIW, the production versions are top notch to say the least. I have had my Snorkel installed since 2006, so going on 11 years. I have wheeled my truck hard in the PNW on tight, branch ridden trails and in Moab several times. The Snorkel has held up to hundreds of branch scrapes, being laid against trees, having rocks flung at it, vibration from bumpy dirt roads and slamming down on rocks, etc. Despite this abuse, the Snorkel looks pretty damn close to what it did new. Granted my truck stays in my garage, the Snorkel body resists sun fade extremely well. I have had zero issues with it whatsoever.

My personal opinion, follow the instructions when installing. If you are going to cut a 3" hole in your fender, do it right and drill the A-pillar holes. If you ever plan to take your Snorkel off, don't get one to begin with.

You can either contact your local ARB Distributor or there are some online retailers taking preorders, such as Sierra Expeditions. The latter pretty much always has the lowest prices for everything ever.

It's an oblong shape, so you cut two holes and then remove the excess material between them.
