I was actually pretty keen on getting a 4th gen limited v8. I had a couple that I was strongly considering and too kfor inspection, and not once had even looked at the 5th gen because I didn't like the interior or the exterior as much. But I ended up with one because I got a smoking deal w/ a 6yr-200,000km warranty for about 8K more than the 4th gens I was looking at.

The interiors on the 4th gen were so much nicer than the 5th and its big fat knobs. However at the end of the day, I don't tow and it's actually got more cargo room, something that I need. The interior could be much better (coming from an Infiniti) but I've grown to live with it. It's my workhouse truck that does not need to be waxed constantly and can take the "offroad" abuse I need for work. It's got plenty enough get-up and go on the highway to pass people and the fuel mileage isn't bad for how big of a vehicle it is. Really, whoever has fuel economy and offroad capable SUV in the same sentence better be talking about how you choose one or the other!

Regarding towing, I don't think any vehicle no matter what it is should be towed at its claimed capacity - I've always heard 3/4 of claimed max.

PS The white GTR is on my list of must-owns! Maybe I'll have to head to Vegas to bag the **** out of one in the mean time haha.

Indeed, but as someone considering a 5th-gen, I found your posts in this thread informative.

As for the suggestion that the thread be closed: why? If it has legs, let it run.

My 2010 TE is my 4th T4R I've owned...had a 2nd gen and two 3rd gens, skipped the 4th gen because I didn't like the styling. Personally, I don't see the HUGE drop-off in quality that the OP suggested. Sure, there are some things that could be better, but there were things in the previous gens that irked me. There's no vehicle that will completely satisfy everyone and their driving style. Personally, I don't race around in my 4runner because driving in South Florida is insane and it's just not safe to drive a vehicle of this size like you were driving a car...so, the lack of "get-up-and-go" really doesn't bother me. Other people need that in a vehicle, so to each his own. The only issue I have with the original post was the MPG...that seems REALLY low. I haven't averaged less that 19-20 a tank since I've owned mine, though I suspect I drive a bit more on the highway than you. The fact is, if you're in stop-and-go 90% of the time, it doesn't matter what you're driving (other than a hybrid), youre going to get killed on gas mileage.

Any smart guy who thinks a 30 minute test drive, or spending 10 minutes in the cabin oohing and ahhhing all the features is enough to REALLY get to know a vehicle is either prophetic or sadly mistaken. No dealer in their right mind is going to let me take the 4runner for a week, tow my supra to a race, and in general put it through my daily abuse. So to assume I was an uneducated or under read buyer is an abhorrent statement - I made a FAIR assumption that because we had had great experiences with OTHER 4runners we would have no less of a great experience with this one. For that I was wrong.

Now I found your followup more informative. But on point number 2, I'd look for a new dealer. My local guy basically begged me multiply times to take it for the weekend or at least over night for a test drive.

I didn't get that either. If your in town a lot, how the heck do u go through 20 vehicles? And if you are putting on that many miles to go through 20, than you have to be on the highway and that is the crappiest mileage ever.

Anyone who has owned previous generation 4runners has to admit the 5th gens aren't quite built to the same level. HOWEVER, (as we mention in every one of this type of thread) the previous gens were also much more expensive for their time. Toyota has got to give somewhere if we demand a 2012 4runner for $35k......the same as it was priced 15 years ago.

Totally agree with you on this statement. Still own my 97 SR5 which now has 166,000 miles and still running strong. I just bought a 2011 SR5 T4R and I paid the same price I paid for my 97 15 years ago. Wow that blows my mind. I also think that's the case with many autos today. If these auto companies have to make money, they gotta be cutting costs somehow.
I do like my new 4Runner, but I can relate to some of the opinions shared here. It drives more like a car than a truck. At my age (51) that's not really a bad thing. I never buy the first year of a new model, so I bought the 2011. I also purposely waited for the 5Gen because the 4Gen was just not big enough for me.
I hope my new Runner will be just as reliable as my 97 has been.

I average 19.2 in the city with the stock tires inflated to 40psi. So either you're compelled to floor a 6K lb vehicle from light to light or you were dragging a huge acme anvil behind you.

I should never have read this thread. Thanks to ZMV, I'm now reconsidering my 2011 4Runner purchase.

After thinking about it, it just doesn't suit my needs. I had hopes to turn this into my bug-out vehicle and/or Zombie Response Team vehicle but its simply not fast enough to escape DC traffic. Bumper to Bumper traffic makes it tough to bug-out fast enough and I simply don't think my 4Runner, even with a steel pushbar like the cops have is going to be enough. I need something more menancing.

Just my quick thoughts. Either my close family or I have owned a 4runner since they came out! So Ive enjoyed the progress of every model change there has been. I traded my 08 SR5 4x4 in on the 11TE and never looked back!! I dont agree in the least bit that its in any way less of a well built 4runner than any of the previous 4 I personally owned. As for the power I drive my FJ which has the 235hp motor like the 4th gens on a daily basis. So when I hop over in the 11TE I notice the power difference. The 5th gen does not give it as fast as the 08 4runner until I smash the pedal to the mat and leave a 4th gen in the rear mirroreace: Heres our three I have pics of.

I still regret not bidding on the former Fairfax County Riot Control Unimog (minus water canon) that went up on ebay a few years ago. Only had about 10k miles on it. The county used 9/11 funds to buy a brand new one and their "old" went to auction. The winner got it for $25k I think....:dammit:

It was already painted black too!!!
