He bought a vehicle and posted up what he thought of it. It was not to his liking, I actually would rather see honest opinions more than I would like to see everyone preaching how great the 5th Gen 4Runner is. I love mine, but it does have its faults.

I am sure the Land Cruiser will be a good platform, post up some pics I have always been a fan of the Land Cruisers.

maybe it is just a blind spot in my thinking but honestly I have never looked at or fooled with the display that gives the mpg calculation

no way it could be accurate given the way errors integrate over time
besides from what I read, those that do the math and compare find that the car computer is optimistic

The inaccuracy is consistent enough to be useful.

With 32" tires, mine falls consistently in a range of optimism from .2 to .8. I can assume at any given time, with good accuracy, that it's reading .5 high.

Where else to post about a 4Runner than a 4Runner forum? There are no doubt many non-4Runner owners who read these boards in order to find out about.....surprise....4Runners.

I sympathize, knowing your standards for information quality, but in such a wide environment, things are what they are.

I doubt you'd want the forum re-titled "5th gen satisfied owners only".

Thank you! If the OP had listed his issues, like many others here have done from gas milage to rear window problems, that's fine. Even to say "Hey I am getting rid of this thing because I am disappointed in it" would be a learning story for owners and potential owners. The 4Runner is not a perfect machine and posting problems and solutions is valuable. But to post about problems to justify to himself and the readers as reasons for buying a different vehicle is suspect to say the least. I have read at least 10 versions of his story on this and other forums in the past. Same script, different person. THAT is why I posted in this thread.

I will chime in in case a prospective 5th gen t4r buyer stumbles upon this thread. I just purchased an 12 TE and im overall very satisfied. Everything has been great minus a few minor quirks... My mileage is showing 17.5 50/50 highway and city driving. This is not a hand calculated number and Im not sure how far my t4r's computer is from an actual hand calculation. I have 1000 miles on it so i expect my mileage to only increase over the next few thousand miles. at about 70 mph the hood shakes. It is not felt or heard, but I can visually see the hood vibrating while traveling at highway speeds. it may be because its thin material or its built this way in its design. I notice the steering is very touchy. more so than any other truck or SUV ive ever driven. This may be easily fixed by a caster adjustment though. Ive also noticed its very susceptible to wind turbulence. Im coming from a dodge 2500 4x4 where the truck was well planted due to its shear weight. The T4r seems to veer off the road with every gust of wind. I believe this may be a normal thing for all light weight suvs and such. This is my very first Toyota so its a learning curve coming from big heavy gas guzzling American vehicles.

Fair enough to post an "exit post." And while it would have been more valuable to read something other than "I didn't love it," you can't fault the guy for moving on if he isn't nuts about his truck. There are many superior vehicles out there if you have the means, and life is too brief not to be passionate about what we drive.

That said, I have driven more than 100 vehicles in the past two years and, oddly enough, have yet to find one (Porsches aside) I am more passionate about than the 4R.

I wish I could say that I didn't agree with some of the negative points made on this thread, but after a few weeks I too am a little disappointed with the build quality. The thing has A LOT of plastic all over it and inside, and the plastic is not of very good quality.

The hood does indeed shake on the hwy. I suspect it is just from being made out of thin material. And yes, the slightest little wind will cause it to veer all over the road like I have been slamming back martinis all day. Hopefully new tires and an alignment will fix that. Who knows.

Knowing what I do now, I would have bought a Land Cruiser even if I had to get one that was a couple years old. At least I would know that it would be still on the road and going strong in 10 years. I will be very surprised if my 4runner turns 10.

Who knows, I am about to take a long 3,800 mile trip in it. If I still feel the same way when I get back I might be selling mine as well.

It's been dead-on accurate for me when I compare it to my manual calculations. Also, I don't overfill the tank -- I stop as soon as the pump automatically shuts off the first time. I would assume "topping it off" could lead to some minor inaccuracies.

Fuelly.com is a great resource for manually tracking your MPG and comparing it to others. You can set your account up to receive text messages, then all you have to do is text their server your stats at every fill-up -- miles driven, price per gallon, gallons used (MPG).

Here's a screenshot of what the text interface looks like.

It hasn't been dead-on accurate for me, but close enough. If you reset it at each fill-up it's likely to be more accurate. But, I haven't calculated what my standard deviation for MPG is in typical driving, so it would be difficult to say if one or the other is anomalous. I know the app I use is fairly accurate because it uses actual fuel consumed based on volume (what I put in when I fill-up). I honestly don't know how the stock MPG calculator comes to its conclusion for MPG, but I would guess it has something to do with throttle position rather than fuel flow since it doesn't seem to account for time coasting in neutral.

I will say their resell is staggering, I bought the car 6 months ago for 36, put 14k miles on it, and sold it for 35,300... so it cost me 700$.

You need to re-read the op. He didn't post about problems (except the one about his drivers seat). It was overwhelmingly more about overall build quality IN COMPARISON to his prior 4Runners.

There is no doubt that it is not the same. We can say this about many products these days - sadly.

Line up side by side a gen4 v6, gen4 v8, and a gen5. Go around and open/close doors, work the controls, touch the materials, drive them one immediately after the other. I did exactly this and it was absolutely obvious which one was FAR, FAR superior, to me anyway. I still very rarely see Gen5's around here and that's bad for the future of the vehicle. They better return to their roots or the 4runner will be phased out.
