Secondary Air Pump Mod Validity

Yes it is oiled, and no, it will not hurt anything. If you are concerned, just wrap it in a paper towel tightly for 24 hours and it will absorb most if any excess oil.
 
I put the Uni Filter UP-107 on last night. Super easy to swap, my foam filter didn't look too bad with a little over 90k miles on the truck but nice to have done as a just in case.

Nice to know it's not an emergency situation. I still have a while before I need to worry about this.
 
I wouldn't wait too long though. I've 30K on odo and drive 99% of time on pavement and my secondary had some dry grass and some dirt inside. Filter did its job but I would not want to wait till 90K for sure.
 
Also depends on the climate and a lot of other factors. Arizona is a lot hotter and drier than where I am. Yours could be in a lot worse shape than mine. Since it only runs on startups and shutdowns (from what I understand) mileage doesn't have a huge affect on it either. For example I just sold a 2008 4runner with less miles than my 5th gen!
 
Mine appeared to be in good shape but got er done anyway.

What trimming are you all talking about on the uni up 107 filter? I found one pic where it was sticking out. Are you trimming the stem so it slides down farther?
 
For everyone's reference, I just did this Mod today 2014 with 80k miles on it and the filter, while completely intact, is starting to show signs of getting brittle (likely signs it COULD have a little piece break off in the future). I think this mod is definitely something to do when the vehicle is out of warranty, but not sure its warranted while under warranty from the dealer or an aftermarket company.

Glad i changed mine (been out of warranty for years), did the UNI filter and installed it in under 5 minutes including a startup check.
 
Installed my UNI filter on Sunday. Bought the filter a year ago and forgot about it. Super simple mod and worth it in my opinion. There is definitely a noticeable suction noise when that air pump kicks on though. High pitched whistle but doesn't bother me.
 
Interesting idea. Of all the pumps and valves I've replaced as an auto tech, I don't think any were from filter failure. All were condensation/moisture seizing the valves or water taking out the pump.

Anyone know the part number for the OEM foam filter? When I look it up it only shows the plastic part, not the foam filter itself.

If I can I'd just rather replace the foam OEM filter and have an extra laying around.
