this is pretty interesting...... one thing that drives me crazy is when stopped, and switching to S mode, it puts me in 4th gear having me to switch quickly to 1st gear...... every other car automatically puts it in 1st when stopped... anyone else driven insane by this? :target:

You are actually in 1st gear when stopped. The "4" just means that will be the highest gear the tranny will shift to. In other words, no 5th gear while driving in town at 35mph. If you put it in 1st gear, it will stay there, until you shift it manually.

nope its in automatic mode up to 4th gear... whats the point of S mode if you have to downshift into 1st all the way before taking off? Its not a matter of RTFM. I'm very familiar with how this works.

Again, when you are stopped with the shifter in "S", you start out in 1st gear.
Why would you want to just leave it 1st, without letting the tranny shift through all the gears up to 4th automatically? After all, it is an "automatic" tranny, right?
explain to me the point of S mode then? Shifting into S is to be able to MANUALLY control the gears (as much as one can anyway)... shifting the trans to S while stopped may put you in 1st gear but you have no control when it shifts unless you MANUALLY downshift by flicking down 4 times.. this is not debatable.

whos leaving it in first gear? wtf are u talking about? I have plenty of other cars that have manual trans thanks..... its fine if you dont feel the need to use your S mode... I on the other hand use it for passing etc... FYI I do very little freeway driving - my commute is stop and go through about 45 traffic lights... putting it in S mode and not shifting it manually is pointless why not just leave it in auto? Or why have this feature at all if you dont use it? Your logic makes no sense.

WTF? I use "S" mode all the time. In fact I prefer it for in town driving.
I'm driving a 2012 and am very familiar with how the tranny functions. And yes, on the highway I will usually bump up to 5th and pull back into 4th to pass while in "S" mode.

You can put it in any gear you want after moving over to "S". As stated earlier, that will determine the highest gear the tranny will shift to unless directed otherwise by you. I really think you should review that manual.

I agree, it is definitely backwards and I just simply cannot make it second nature....yet. BMW has it right, and believe it or not, my Mazda CX-5 (crossover) that I traded in for the 4Runner, was the same as the BMW - but they have a driver-focused feel all around, so it makes sense. I used it ALL the time in the CX-5, but never use it in the Runner.

dude this has nothing to do with that.. And this is not my point..
say you want to pass someone and quickly down shift to 2nd gear while in D... Flip to S and what it *should* do is put you in the gear that you are currently in so that one flick down on the lever lets you downshift one gear... not some non-over drive sh!t.... get it? now stop and read what I'm trying to say. you can use S however you want. This use case is completely different than yours so stop cluttering up this thread with something that has nothing to do with what I'm talking about. :lalala:
This does nothing but limit you to 4th gear much like turning off over drive... and again this has nothing to do with what I'm doing. Putting it in S mode and leaving it there does not change the shift timing unless you do it with your hand...
Like the OP said the S mode is backwards and makes no sense.

Woo hoo, back on topic. Has anyone had those little shift labeling placards apart? I am just wondering if the labeling stays white on the letters black on the background all the way through? IE - does it show a mirror image of what is printed on the front? Pics would be of much help.

Second, the OEM shift pattern is not backward. This is a truck, and the ''S'' mode is to be used as a ''top gear limiter''. Towing is one use for it as an example. Same thing as the old D-3-2-1 patterns
And this is why it is not backward, it is not to be used as a manual transmission replacement. You can, but it was obviously not meant to seeing how it shifts exactly the same in ''4'' as in ''D'' untill it reaches its max gear.

To me it makes sense to push forward for an upshift. In some weird way, I can equate forward as "up" and backward as "down." It makes a lot more sense to me than the reverse, anyway.
That said, I've never driven a sequential shift gearbox. I have a 6MT in my car that I use for track days and autocross, and usually leave the 'Runner in full auto. It's not a race car, and if I want it to go a little faster, I'm just a little more aggressive with the go pedal. Works fine to me, and I don't think the truck is underpowered at all. I do think the throttle is not very responsive, and it did take some getting used to, but once I adapted it became a non-issue. It's just the nature of drive-by-wire vehicles in an MPG-focused industry.
The only time I ever use the "S" mode is when towing, to keep the transmission out of 5th gear, in lieu of an actual tow/haul mode.

It's funny, the last time anyone noticed that I could manually pick the gear in the 4Runner was 2 years ago when I took a classmate up to a mine in Idaho Springs. "Wow man, you can shift it on your own?" ****er never got me back for gas.....
And just for the record, there are some manufactures that use a left, right pattern which really sucks when trying to shift around a high g corner..........life could be worse.

I come from having a few manual vehicles although not off-roaders. There are times when I really just don't want the transmission to think it's smarter than me and shift when I want a gear held. Be it towing, passing, icy conditions or just general off-roading I find the harder I am working my vehicle, the more control I want to retain. Doesn't mean that I doesn't work left in auto, it's just what makes me feel the most in control of what's going on.
The left/right shifters suck. To me it's just the manufacturer just telling me they don't want me to do any shifting, but they want to appear 'sporty'.
