Shock and strut types for All Models

Hoping to set the record straight here, since there is a lot of conflicting information out there for Shock types for the SR5, Trail, and Limited. One thread noted that the SR5 and Trail both had Bilstein Monotube shocks, and the limited has the XREAS shocks. Another thread said all 3 models had the smae shocks.

I posted a thread last night about my shock absorber on the front driver side of my 2011 trail.

I was under the impression I had a Bilstein monotube gas shock. Now I am hearing it is a liquid shock, so now am wondering if it is the XREAS shock.

Yes, I am a Newb. I know nothing about cars. I only know that 4runners are amazing. I have NO experience with mechanical repairs. Be gentle in your responses. I am just wondering if this would be covered under warranty and if not should i even bother replacing with OEM or aftermarket.

It you have a trail then you don't have XREAS. Only the limited has XREAS, which are easily recognized because they are linked via hydraulic lines.
 
You have two threads about the exact same thing?

Sr5 and Trail have the same shocks Limited has XREAS. If you looked the trucks up on Toyota's website you would be able to understand that.

I'm newb as well. I have the 13 Limited and would like some help with lift ideas. I was thinking I would just get the bilstein 5100 on all four at about 2" and get rid of stock tires. Is that not the best option since it has the XREAS? Sorry but I am a rookie on cars.
Been trolling here for a couple of months and love the forum. You guys are loaded with info. Thanks.
 
TE and SR5 are the same. Limited is XReas. Part Numbers for either can be found in theshop mmanual (see link in my signature).

I believe installing the Bilsteins (or any other aftermarket shock) will trash the XREAS system, as you will have to disconnect the hydraulics that link the factory shocks. XREAS is a complete system. XREAS also limits the amount of lift that can be installed on a LE before you are again faced with dispensing with the system. Sorry, but I do not know what that range is.

There is no range; you could install some body spacers, but that's it.

As you mentioned, it's a closed and linked system, so there's nothing you can do on the shocks, etc itself unless you completely replace the XREAS with an after market system. You might be able to replace the springs for stiffer ones, but that in and by itself would make little sense and not give you any lift.
