Should I *gasp* trade for a Sequoia?`

My local dealer has a 2008 Sequoia SR5 5.7l with under 20k miles on their lot as a CPO (1.9%). I sure could use the 10k # tow rating for a bigger travel trailer, not to mention the extra space to haul the dog, camping gear, and two little/one big girls stuff. But, I would hate to regret my decision.

They want to buy my truck back as is (have not given me a number yet), and are willing to also buy my camper. I do not see much for parts available for the Sequoia aside from lifts, which is a downside.

Sticker price on the Sequoia is a little shy of $31k. Has JBL, running boards (yuck), steering wheel controls, backup cam and sensors, and third row.

Personally the latest Sequoia is too big. The like the previous model. The other pet peeve of mine is that I never buy the first year of a new model. Those are the only things I can contribute. But it's ultimately your decision. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

I have a 2010 4R, also a first year. I do not worry too much about that.

I do, however, worry about the size of the Sequoia on trails. If it is too big, that may keep me from doing as much trail running. Or, it will get me to spend some bucks on my IH Scout done, or even better to buy a Polaris Ranger LOL.

My future plans (next 5 years or so) are a pontoon boat, selling my pop up and getting a hard sided travel trailer, and a Ranger. The 4R is not much suited for pulling the travel trailer. While within the tow limits, the wheelbase is short. I am unsure on the pontoon, and the Ranger is not an issue either.

We will see what kind of numbers they offer on my truck and trailer, but I have the feeling that my baby is not going anywhere. When it comes time to sign, I probably would be substituting my wifes car and she will be driving the 4R LOL

If your need is more space, larger engine for greater towing capabilities etc.., then yes. If you do go ahead it better look something like this... or better!

I would say no. But it is your decision. Are you going to miss wheeling your 4Runner? The sequoia is not as off-road worthy in my opinion. True the V8 would be nice but it is not enough for me to trade my baby in.

About the only way I would trade my baby in or sell would be for a 5th Gen with a V8, then I would start all over again. Otherwise I am very happy.

I would never dream of leaving my 4R if this were an option. The tow rating is what kills me, and the previous gen v8's were more in line with what I would feel safe with. The trailer my wife wants is around 5k # loaded (KZ 240). With a 4th gen v8 that would not be an issue. The one I want is around 9k # fully loaded (Forest River Surveyor with a couple slides and much more ground clearance).

nice Highlander...

fyi...the dealer was going to give me 30 on a trade with 60,000 miles..trade him even up, then then you can start modding again.

I sure could use the 10k # tow rating for a bigger travel trailer,

I believe the 2008 5.7 4x4 had a tow rating of 9,600 using the rating system back then. Today, the same vehicle for 2013 is rated at 7,100 using the new method.

I considered the Sequoia before we ended up with a Pilot. Yes the Sequoia is large but it didn't drive like a large vehicle. The turning radius was suprisingly tight and the power of the 5.7 would throw you back in your seat. We liked the ability to put two car seats side by side and still access the third row. The cargo area was indeed very large.

You will probably notice about 5mpg less with the Sequoia over the 4runner and I agree with you that you probably won't be able to take the larger vehicle on as many trails nor will it be as much "fun" as the 4runner. Maybe they will give you an amazing trade and come down more on their asking price. Good luck.

I think you could probably make a trail-worthy rig out of a 1st gen, but probably not a 2nd gen. I understand your other needs though. I haven't seen any front/ rear lifts for the 2008+Sequoia. Where did you find them? Planning on doing custom?

I have to say that lifted Sequoia above looks pretty sweet.....and really expensive. I have fantasized a little myself about lifting a 2nd gen. Sequoia and adding Rock Warrior wheels. tires and color-matched grill. Then I drove one and hated it.

To each his own though.

What the hell are you trying to tow?

I made a thread last night about trading my Corvette for a Sequoia.

Oh and here's the breakdown:

5,500lb tow rating on the 150s.
3,200lb Corvette
1,200lb Trailer
$80 brake controller
= tows like a champ.

Now for the rest of the story:

The 150 is a much more stable platform than the 4th Gen 120's. Though, they had the big V8. Toyota far over estimated the tow capacity on the 4G's...choosing instead to get caught up in a tow rating advert war. 7,000lbs? No way. 6,200 at best.

Returning to the 150 - the platform is superiour to the 120...but without the V8 it's hard to justify matching or exceeding the 6,200 estimation to a proper 6,500lb rating. They dropped it to 5,500 to under rate it this time (my humble opinion).

Conclusion: You're fine with 5,000lbs. I towed the vette all the way from NY to Upper Michigan to Kansas City. Get electric brakes and a controller.

Above is a quote of the camper weight, and another of other toys coming. Add in a three horse slant with at least one gelding and you quickly eat up the 5k limit and/or available power.

:wow2: OUCH! :moping:

I'm sorry..I didn't mean to hurt your feelings..

you have sweet truck, fixed the way you want it....if you're going to step up, I'd look at what Mtn Rush did....spend a couple a dollars more and really turn it up. A LC can last you 10 years no problem.

Those almost remind of Armadas on the road...

I respectfully disagree. But it's your truck and I shan't tell thee what to do.
