Slow down .... stop ... let go of brake ... "thunk"

I don't know if that's how we do it it now to be honest? I bought my 4Runner a couple years ago so maybe its changed? Though I got my booklet with the purchase of my vehicle if I remember right...

As long as it looks like its from Toyota and not a 3rd party company (though the Toyota Warranty kind of is 3rd party anyways...)
 
The new driveshaft is in and I'm going to my local dealership to get it replaced tomorrow morning.

I hate dealerships so is this replacement a simple no-brainer or is there some know-how involved that their typical techs can screw up?
 
Dealerships are unreal. Just got back from getting my driveshaft replaced. No issues. In and out in 30 minutes. Bill came - $267. Was actually looking forward to this part.

I said let me speak to your manager. Manager takes me outside fearing that I might get loud in a waiting room of about 30 service customers. He asked what the agreement was going into this. I said the only agreement was that the dealership would cover the part ($350 part from what I see online - Service Advisor at the dealership said it was a $1k part - told him he was dead wrong) and I would cover the labor. Told him I wasn't paying for 2 hours of labor for something that took 20 minutes.

He spoke to the Sr Service Manager and they came back to $130.

Bottom line..... if you go into a dealership (and I mean ANY part of a dealership) and you don't know your numbers and info, then you will absolutely be screwed.

Unfortunately this is so true of most dealerships (sales and service) even though they're supposed to be quoting you parts and times from an established guideline by Toyota... :(
 
I took the 4R into Avondale Toyota and am having the shaft replaced tomorrow under the extended warranty.:banana: I mentioned the TSB as helpful info towards the problem and they came back and said it would be covered under it...no problem (I have a $50 deductible, though).

I had looked them up on Yelp and dealerrater and found great reviews compared to others.

If anyone is in the Phoenix area with this issue and is still under warranty, I'd recommend going there. They greased the shaft, too, even though they're switching it out! Hopefully this will be a dealer I can continually rely on.
 
I have a V6 and just had mine replaced under the TSB. I have 78k mi and am under the Toyota CPO Warranty. I can confirm that I got the new design sealed driveshaft. My wife even noticed a difference when she drove it home, and she never notices noises (she thought I was nuts when I told her the pinion bearing was failing a while ago because she couldn't hear it).
 
As a quick but uneventful follow-up... things are noticeably smoother now with the new shaft and definitely no more clunk. Nice to be rid of it as it was pretty annoying. Definitely worth the 1 hour of labor I payed to get it replaced under the TSB.
 
I have a 2003 V8 4WD with a bad clunk. I am unclear if this is for the front Drive shaft or rear driveshaft? or both?

Thanks. I have greased the hell out of both the front and rear driveshafts, the clunk went away for a little while but now its back, and it seems to be getting worse. i think i am at the point where I need to replace the driveshaft, just wasnt sure which one(s) I had to replace.

get under there and do it again. thump thud clunk comes from the center drives shaft before it goes into the rear diff. grease that zerk fitting again. dont replace , grease it some more. maybe use different type or brand of grease.

tube of grease is still easier and less expensive than a driveshaft!

^^^ Bingo.

I did mine and the clunk came back. Did all the zerks again with a lot more grease and now I am clunk free. I haven't had a single clunk for thousands of miles now. Greasing the zerks should be part of your service routine every 5,000 miles or so. If maintained, serviceable joints will last longer than "sealed" joints.

Installing the new "sealed" driveshaft to solve this problem would be like going deer hunting with a Sherman tank. Will it do the job? Yes. But it's wayyyyyy unnecessary.
 
Have the same issue w/ 2008 V8 SE, dealer won't do anything to rectify the situation. But then they can't even change the oil correctly so not a big concern.

Like Audi before this, Toyota has lost a customer for life.

As w/ so much of corporate society they are penny wise and pound foolish.
