Snowy/forest trails for easy solo trips?

18 psi in the summer, on freeways?

And how does no ABS help in ice? No traction control, I can understand. But no ABS?
 
So yesterday my wife mentioned wanting to go to Pappy and Harriet's this weekend out in pioneer town, so I thought that might be a perfect excuse to do a longer overland journey.

The current plan is to scoot out of LA tomorrow morning (saturday the 5th) and wind up at North Shore Cafe in Fawnskin around noon, fill my wife full of french toast, and then run 3N16 to 18 just north of Baldwin Lake, jump over 18 and catch Burns Canyon rd (2N02) -this or Smarts Ranch?- all the way to Rim Rock and Pioneer town, and maybe kick around there, or even go into Joshua Tree NP and maybe do Eureka peak. then ultimately wind up back at Pappy and Harriets for an early-ish dinner.

This of course is all very tentative for tomorrow and my wife's PMS could alter the plans at any time without notice. I thought I post just incase it makes and anyone wants to tag along.

My rig stays in town and on the trails almost all of the time so 18 psi is for rocky summer trails and snowy winter ones so I just keep it there year round. Of course if I did take it on the freeway I would add some air - 32 pounds or so.

As fr as the ABS, do a quick search on here for something like "ABS almost killed me" and ther are at least a few threads on trucks not stopping in the snow and ice due to the ABS over-activating.

Not sure, never done parts of it. 3N16 is easy, not sure about Burns canyon though. Just waiting for the wife to wake up now...

That's a pretty ambitious route for a day trip - I don't think it's too hard just a long haul, but looks like an awesome day - have fun and please report what that route is like - I bet you'll see a lot of burn damage from that big fire at the end of summer. Be safe.
 
yeah we'll see if we make it to JTNP, my guess is probably not.

We didn't make Joshua tree NP, but we did 3N16 from Fawnskin to Burns canyon rd to pioneer town.

Overall it was pretty easy, a few places the hardest stretch was between Arrestre Creek and the junction of Smarts Ranch Rd on Burns Canyon Rd. it was a little steep in some places, and a couple of rock sections where you have to pick your line. otherwise it was pretty mellow. Saw a few folks on the trail, and saw some people shooting. All in all a nice country drive for the afternoon. Of note, the Joshua trees we saw on this trail were way better than any we'd seen in JPNP. Also, Pappy and Harriets is a weird place.
 
Snow drive tomorrow ??

Hey gang, just a heads up we are getting snow right now and supposed to be sunny tomorrow. The local trails will be prime for a snow drive if anyone wants to join me.
 
I couldn't wait to get out there and the trails are perfect for easy snow driving. Supposed to be sunny and cold tomorrow so the time is right for a fun drive.....





 
Had an epic solo drive on Monday around GVL with perfect easy, but fun and untracked snow conditions. Unfortunately I ran into the FS locking the two in-town gates, but the other two entrances don't have gates so you're on your own to decide if it's driveable or not. The local trails can handle another 6-8" before it starts getting a little sketchy on some of the deeper sections.

Looking forward to Monday, hopefully. Looks like snow in the forecast this weekend, hopefully it's not that extra 6" that's going to close things.
 
Yeah now it's forecasted for snow Saturday. Either way we will have a great time, I have a map of big bear and know a lot of good scenic snow trails.
