So I Hit an Elk...

Elks are huge even the calves, y'all are really lucky to be in good shape!!! Hope everything works out to y'alls advantage on insurance...

The responding officer said he's responded to five deer/elk collisions the night before, so it's pretty common out there as well. Definitely lucky we hit the little guy and not the bull which would have absolutely come through the windshield and been a whole other story. All four legs of the calf were snapped so I think it's size was just small enough to keep the weight below the hood upon impact and drive it forward vs go up over the hood.

No joke about hitting the little one. Have a family friend who was in a similar accident with a bull and was gored in the head, 40 years later she is still having to deal with issues.

Glad you're okay. As per other responses about USAA, I have nothing but great things to say about them. When I totaled my C5 Z06 they were great to work with, I didn't think I did that much damage to the vehicle but they said otherwise. Best of luck sorting this out.

Spoke with the shop and the estimator told me he's coming to $24,395 in damage including $8k in airbags, new hood, radiator, radiator supports, condenser. He was supposed to email me the estimate but I'll have to call in the morning to get it sent over so I don't have all the detail yet. Sounds like it'll depend on what USAA considers the market value and what threshold they use (70-75%). He mentioned the cost of the rental car would also be a factor if it's close. I have to think it'll total out. Sounds like I might hear their verdict tomorrow.

Glad you're alright, ColoradoToyota. My wife was in a collision last month where someone else ran into her, totaling her car. USAA, as they always are, was awesome to deal with. The accident was Friday, inspection Monday morning, "totaled" report Tuesday morning, deposit (for more than I expected) in my account on Thursday. Couldn't have been more happy about the outcome. Once the claim was settled with the other driver (her insurance was being a B...) my deductible was refunded to me.

If you don't feel $24,395 is enough, you can have it taken to three shops to have an estimate done, I believe. I'd be trying everything I could to get that thing totaled. It'll never be the same.

As for the coffee on the sunroof... When I wrecked my 1st gen my wife's coffee splashed all over her face. She was afraid to open her eyes because she thought it was blood. Scary morning for her.

For you and Woz1976-MT , if it helps you somehow, CCC One was used by USAA when my wife totaled her car last month. My wife's car was in good shape, but not perfect. The inside was pretty "doggy" but clean, and a couple panels had been re-painted by a previous owner. It scored, "very good" in every category with the only "bad" against it being the mileage, at 130k or so. The CCC One report was pretty neat in that it tells you the EXACT cars (with VIN) that it is comparing with. All twelve, in this case, were at dealerships and reflected their inflated pricing. Four of them were even a model year newer.

Glad you are okay! USAA is real good to work with. Keep us posted.

Sounds like our accident is trending the same as your wife's timeline (on a Friday) and I'd be super happy to have money in my account this week to just go back out and get another 4Runner.

Sounds like everyone has had great luck with USAA in terms of their cars totaling out so I'll just have to hope for the same. Good thought on taking it to other shops if I need to. He mentioned $8k in airbags alone but I've been hearing from everyone (granted this is forum members vs a neutral mechanic) they typically cost $1.5-$3k each. I checked the brochure which claims the 4Runner has 8 airbags but I counted 12. Unless the curtain bags are one suuuper long one on each side, it seemed to me there were 3 on each side from the headliner (making 6 plus dash, wheel, 2 at the knees and 2 in the seats totaling 12). Anyway, $8k seemed light but what do I know.

Call a local luxury dealership and ask which body shop they out source to. They'll give you a good high estimate, I am sure.

4. Know your policy. What are you paying for, replacement cost or actual cash value. In other words does your policy that you are paying for include replacement cost, i.e. they pay to replace your car with a new one, or actual cash value, i.e. what the used value of a similar car is going for. This was a sticking point for me, we didn't have replacement cost, only ACV which i didn't know there was a difference but there is.

After reading this, and also various discussions here about 4Runners being "totaled" in relatively minor collisions due to cost of replacing air bags, I decided to check on whether mine was covered for replacement cost. Nope. Can I get it? Yes, IF I had known to ask for it within 30 days of adding the vehicle to my insurance. Since I bought my 4R six months ago, I'm out of luck.

Just thought I'd mention this here, in case anyone buying a 4R wants replacement cost, be sure to ask for it right away!

Totaled. I knew I shouldn't have doubted USAA!

Good news is their estimate of market value is actually a few hundred dollars over what I paid initially (I guess I'm a rad negotiator), and after backing out my collision deductible, it's basically a wash (though not including the interest payments made on the loan which also total a few hundred dollars - hardly something to cry about all things considered).

Some paperwork to wrap up this week, but should have a check in hand by the weekend or early next week.

Thanks for the advice and well wishes - will update with the replacement truck, but should be identical (unless I make an impulse decision to switch colors). Might have the dealer just install bilsteins/springs/BFG's at purchase as well while I'm at it, we'll see...

That's awesome! Glad it worked out so well.

$27K in damages and the fixed it. I wish I would have gotten your estimator. I ended up trading it in 6 months later, a lot of little things weren't the same.

looks like your airbags didnt deploy... thats the key, if they deploy like the OPs did... TOTALED

Ugh that sucks, sorry to hear - the exact scenario I was terrified of. In addition to the airbags, yours being a Limited means it has a higher market value and therefore requires more damage to meet whatever their threshold is to total out.

Hit it with a hammer until the air bags go off before the cops show up :D

Where in the bay area do you live? I follow you on instagram and it always makes me miss northern California - I went to middle school and high school in southern Marin and my folks have since moved to Novato. You're a solid insta follow!

I'm on the Peninsula. Very cool man, I love northern CA, but the Bay Area rat race is testing at times to say the least! Thanks man, glad you're enjoying the feed :thumb3:

Glad you guys are okay.

I have heard it is very rare for them not to total a vehicle after the airbags deploy due to liability in a wreck if something should not go off down the road in another (God forbid) collision.

Sometimes I peruse the exotic car wholesale websites and it's amazing how many really expensive cars look hardly damages but are totaled because of the airbags deploying.

There was a late model Turbo Carrera in Texas I was seriously looking at. Story was the guys girlfriend caught him doing something with somebody else. Sliced up the leather upholstery and started the car and beat the front bumper with a sledge hammer until she got the bags to deploy or something in that vein.

Out of curiosity I started poking around at what a new interior and air bags and such would cost and I was like "Wow. She really screwed over... the insurance company". Never understood people that do stuff like that.
