I had the T8, briefly. The screen was great. Many other details were going to be a matter of tweaking and troubleshooting. Or, settling for what it couldn't do. If your time isn't worth anything and you like tinkering with Android and electronics, this might be a good choice to try. I just went back to the Alpine. Smaller screen. Everything else works. Everything. You get what you pay for.
So it looks like the CTHome T9 head unit is out, waiting for reviews.

While I fully agree that it is foolish to build a system that doesn't upgrade, I don't agree that it won't work in a few years.
I just pulled out an old LG G2 phone with Android 4 (Jelly Bean) that I had sitting in my basement. Originally on Sprint, I fired it up, connected it up to wifi and fired up a couple of the apps that were on the phone - Pandora and Google. Pandora worked nicely, connected up to my account and sounded fine. I could do a google search. Telenav (this was because they were Scout) fired up but didn't connect - I'm not sure if it is before I no longer have Sprint or because Telenav doesn't really exist anymore as Telenav.
Would I want to go back to the G2? Of course not, but it still does work. It is unlikely that the piece of Chinese junk will survive several years in a car environment so the discussion about updates may be academic.

Try going older, like an htc mytouch. The second phone to ever run android released way back in 2008 if I recall. None of the apps will even connect, let alone update. Good old 1.6 donut.... As long as people are fine having the functionality reduced over time, more power to them.

My current phone is a galaxy S3. Probably 7years old? Everything seems to work. Im still grandfatherd into the original verizon unlimited plan. I regularly hit 60G of download data per month, over 100G between both lines. I dont have cable or home internet. I hotspot the kids tablets and download/stream movies/tv/music. This may explain why im more than content with the factory technology in my 4runner..so you tech snobs can shut your face holes lol.
LOL. totally agree. I'll keep my OEM unit and put it back in but enjoy the awesomeness for X years till it becomes a problem.

The Leagoo T5C phone uses the same SoC, so if you search for reviews for the T5C and watch those I think you could expect similar performance. I think either the Senwa LS9718 or LS9918 uses the same SoC.
some performance benchmarks looks similar to the Snapdragon 835 which was used in upper-mid and premium phones a couple years ago, so at least based on the specs I wouldn't expect the same lag issues that the T8 had.

The original was called the T8 because it used an Allwinner T8 SoC, whey they announced the T9 I was confused because allwinner didn't have a T9 on their website

My stock Infosystem NOW has limited functions...when I purchased the new 4Runner in 2017, the infosystem came with Pandora...now it is gone. It also had Facebook Pages, and other apps that Toyota decided it no longer wanted to support, so they remotely deleted them. Frankly the Voice Assist on the stock unit is the most non functional piece of software I have ever experienced in my life. The Navigation is acceptable at BEST.
So I am actually open to spending $600 to have some tech in a car that I absolutely love otherwise. Even if it lasts only a couple of years it is better than the CRAP Toyota included as OEM. I've had to live with that CRAP for almost three years....did I mention that the OEM Headunit is ABSOLUTE CRAP! IT'S CRAP!

Right now it just mutes/unmutes the volume. But I'm pretty sure I can reconfigure. Still learning this OS/HU.

How is the bluetooth audio quality? If you configure the fader to send more volume to the rear, does it reset when the system reboots? Those two issues (and lack of proper wiring adapters) were mostly what killed the T8 option for me (though there are other things I'd like to see).

Well that sucks. Wasn't aware of that. Only had BIG RED for 2 months now. Atm just use bluetooth for my audio/calling needs, but would like much more. Just looked at the ntune app. Only 2 audio apps left :cry2:
Bluetooth is fine far as I can tell, I don't know how it was with the T8.
I'll have to check the fader issue next time I get a chance.
When you say "reboot" do you just mean on/off?
Are you going to try and install it in your 2011 4runner?

Yes. There was a setting on the T8 that controlled how long it would stay on after the truck was turned off, allowing it to be instantly available rather than needing 30 secs-ish to boot. The issue would occur when the unit did a full reboot.

Probably not unless the reviews are good and the wiring adapters are available. The t8 didn’t have the correct adapters for my truck, so no steering wheel controls and no usb and no party mode.
Ok, I checked the fader adjustment I made after the truck sat overnight. Settings still the same.
Any idea how to find that setting that keeps the unit on? I'd really like to be able to power the unit on when the truck is off. (the truck turns off after a few minutes when just accessories are turned on)

It's hard to remember, but I think it was called shutdown delay and had choices like 5 minus, 30 minutes, and 60 minutes. The screen shuts off, but unit stays on for that time period (like a tablet with the screen off).
