So, Tacoma got a new engine...

I am guessing you have some insider info but cannot share it at this time (for obvious reasons). However, any chance on giving us a heads up on when the specs might be revealed and whether or not a 6th gen 4runner is in the cards?

Please:)

Unfortunately I'm on a need to know basis with the 4Runner. And they don't think I need to know. :( I think them developing a new engine for the Tacoma bodes well for the 4Runner living to see another generation. The huge uptick in sales the past 2 years also helps the outlook.

I'm honestly surprised they didn't announce official specs today. I don't deal with that end (or know the official specs for that matter), but I figure that someone knows what the output of the engine is this close to production.

It is not the 2GR-FE or the 2GR-FSE. It is an evolution of the 2GR. Weight reduction, smarter VVT, efficiency improvement in the mechanicals. I can't wait to drive a new Taco with it.

Interesting, I would have figured it'd be an evolution of the 1GR-FE with ideas pulled from the 2GR-FSE's success in RWD platforms; though I imagine if they are using the 2GR platform as the basis, it'd be more heavily built up off the 2GR-FSE engine block/design than the 2GR-FE. I'm just curious how they're going to get that lower-end torque going for the new engine since they seem dead-set on using an Atkins cycle.

In any case as long as it doesn't have that craptastic ValveMatic BS in it, it should be a great engine.

I imagine they wont release official numbers until they get thru epa certificatioins and crash testing.

I for one will be first in line for a new limited blue double cab with pretty much all the bells.

this is for the warden and she already excited for the new Tacoma and she's a die hard Tacoma fan.

so as long as she's happy, I can get away with a lot.

Thank you for your insight! I'm crossing my fingers that Toyota does decide to design a new 4R:).

I'm also curious to hear the specs on this new motor.

So 6th gen starts around October 2015??

So it all sort of makes sense why the TRD Pro came out, throw a little excitement into the end of the 5th generation line.

So around August 2015 you won't be able to buy a new TRD Pro?

So much for the idea of trying to buy one in 2016, that idea shot to hell.

last orders for 2015 go in may for Tacoma's.

new orders for 2016 allocation start in june-2015 with delivery expected in late fall.

that is the typical rotation Toyota. now extend this for japan made only vehicles by about 2 months on delivery date.

No, 2016 4Runner will be same as current. i think you'll be able to get a 2016 4Runner TRD Pro. Hopefully the trim returns on Tacoma.

There is "something" coming engine-wise for the 4Runner, but we'll probably have to wait until 6th gen. I suspect it will be this same engine we're seeing in the new Taco.

While direct injection is greatness for more power and efficiency, it does have the downside of carbon build-up. Hopefully Toyota will account for this with an additional sprayer.

That's mostly why the D4-S system was designed the way it is. If you really want to see how they hold up long term, peek over at the Lexus forums. The IS250, IS350, GS350, IS-F, and GS300 came with engines using the D4-S system so you see how well they hold up.

On an interesting side note the Wikipedia page for the Tacoma is listing its 3.5L V6 as a 2GR-FSE (granted Wikipedia is not exactly the go to place for 100% accurate information, I just figured it'd be interesting to note.)

yeah I am thinking its a next revision of this engine reworked for truck duty. 6gr xxx ??? since the 4GR is a 2.5L and the 5GR is for china use only.

that 2GR FSE doesn't mention any Atkinson features. the 2GR FXE is primarily a hybrid engine geared to recharging batteries and is primarily Atkinson cycle.

from what I opinion on the new motor, is a 2GR FSE with a little bit of features from the 2GR FXE. the only question, what are they going to call it?

2GR FSX?

I'm sure they are not releasing number until final calibration is done. And the calibration is going to be key with this motor. So much is going to be in the hands of the calibration. It's been that way for the last decade, but with the d4s and the atkinson cycle switching there are several new variables to play with. You can do some really funky stuff with the injector timing... with DI. I'm sure they are trying to hit some aggressive MPG goals.

I just can't imagine how the atkinson thing works well in a heavy truck with a small displacement. I guess we will see sometime soon.

I doubt adding power was the primary goal of this motor. I would guess more than the outgoing Tacoma motor, but I would not expect more than 300hp and 270 TQ. Thats about the limit of 3.5L NA setup with all the goodies of today. Dodge and Chevy are at these numbers with their similar 3.6s so I would expect the Toyota 3.5 to be a little lower output. And knowing Toyota, they will opt for reliability over output all day. I would be willing to bet between 270 - 300hp.

I would really like to see a revised 4.0 in the next 4Runner, or maybe some FI as an option for those wanting a bit more punch, but I doubt we are going to see that.
