So who's got rattles?

'16 TRDP here. I have two intermittent rattles, one comes from the passenger side dash speaker cover, the other from the left "bump" trim above the glovebox. Just waiting for things to worsen before tearing into them in a fit of rage...

16 TEP...I had this exact same thing happen this weekend. Sounded like a styrofoam cooler lid rubbing on the cooler in the front passenger speaker cover. I was on bumpy dot roads for two days in a row and it was very noticeable. It was even noticeable when I got back on pavement. The next day driving to work after it sat all night, the noise had disappeared....

a buzzing sound coming from passenger side dash somewhere, it only happens at rpm just off idle, and it has been thus far elusive to locate...has been there since about 20k, i'm at 56k now...really annoying...had it in under warranty a few times, never able to replicate the noise, so it was never fixed...i can't find it


prior vehicles never had a noise that wasn't easily located or remedied, so this is frustrating

2016 SR5 Premium, 5K miles. The sunroof makes a popping sound, also I get this metallic clicking sound from the passenger side of the back seat. The driver seat lumbar support also creaks occasionally. When I searched about the back seat noise, someone had mentioned a similar noise and the seat frame needing to be replaced to address it. I really like the truck and realize these are minor nuisances, though in order to satisfy my mild to moderate OCD I'm gonna have to get them addressed.

Heres my 2 cents from years of tracking down squeaks and rattles in my 2006 T4R. (My 2016 Trail is quiet for the record)
1) Front driver & passenger side window rattles if I lower it about 1-2" going over bumps....you got to get the inside panel off the door and lower the window and find out what is loose - then tighten it or lube it.
2) Sunroof rattles when I tilt it upwards going over bumps.... This is why I ordered my 2016 T4r WITHOUT a sunroof. They are such a pain. My advise is to use heavy grease. It may take up some of the pay or dampen the play to stop the rattle.
3) Front passenger chair seems like the seat frame rattles when going over bumps...I have this on my 2016, or something like it. All I did was move the seat forward about half an inch. Or maybe you could raise the back of the seat up a tad as well.
4) Back seat (60%) makes a rattle if it is reclined in a certain position over bumps...I would say its a safe bet that the latch doesn't catch completely at that angle. Try unlatching the seat and pushing down on it a bit harder to make it catch better. Or use a heavy lube to dampen and stop the rattle.
5) There is something in the cargo area that makes a weird creaking/raking noise over bumps. Can't for the life of me reproduce it....Thats a tricky one. Could be the latch again. Or the hinges. Either way the best thing to do is have someone drive your T4R and you get back in the cargo area and chase that squeak down. Drive for how ever long you need to do track it down.
6) Steering wheel clicking when turning certain directions...Get underneath the steering wheel and find the yoke/U-joint. Use WD40 or a light spray oil and spray it down. Use a cloth on the opposite side that you are spraying this way you dont shoot lube all over your vehicle. The clicking may also be in the tilt/telescoping rods. Take the cover off behind the steering wheel and coat with a light oil and move tilt and telescoping mechanism. Then put back into the usual driving position that you are used to.
7) Some sorta of rattle from passenger rear seat area....Check the latch that holds down the seat. Might not be fully catching. Adjust the latch. Lube up the hinges. You may also want to sit in the seat when someone is driving you around and see if the rattle goes away. If it doesnt, lift the seat up and start chasing that rattle.

Creak from cargo cover end caps

I heard a sporadic creaking noise coming from what I thought was the rear seats and after troubleshooting, turned out to be the cargo cover end caps. Sprayed lithium grease and was ok for awhile but now it's back. Worse in cold weather.

OP, were you able to solve #3? I am about to tear in tonight before i LOOSE my mind. It never happens with an occupant, only when the seat is empty for me. Horrible clicky rattle over bumps. Moving seat position doesnt seem to help.

My 2013 4R LTD with 51,000 miles has so many rattles it's driving me insane. It's my DD and has basically has been 99% hwy and I've only had it for about 2 1/2 yrs. Unfortunately I'm way past my warranty range so they won't take a look at it or fix it unless I'm paying for it which would be costly anyways since there are so many rattles

I just wanted to get a general consensus from others and how many rattles your 4R has. I don't know if this is an issue for everyone else or maybe I just got a bad egg. I don't want to trade it in and lose value but it seems a new rattle pops up every month and when all of them go off at the same time it drives me nuts.

i had something similar going on a while back, especially when the weather was colder--check under your passenger seat. i found that there was a large sticker/warning label wrapped around a wiring harness that would buzz if it pushed up against some of the seat frame in a certain manner. i eventually cut it off the harness and the buzzing sound is now gone. it took me a really long time to isolate the noise as it did sound like it was coming from the dash.

If anybody has a squeaking coming from the rear especially over bumps....listen in! I made an appointment with the dealer to get it looked at. Was absolutely driving me crazy. In the mean time waiting for apt, I had to take rear all-weather floor liner out to put up the 3rd row seat. Guess what??? NO squeak! Put the liner back in and started squeaking again! So the rear liner causes the squeak. Trimmed it up around the edge and it's fixed!

If you leave your sunroof open when going over bumps or rough roads, you shouldn't be surprised if the thing starts to rattle. My advice: keep it closed unless driving on a smooth surface.

As for rattles in general, someone else said it best earlier in this thread: this is a $40k-$50k offroad SUV. It's designed to get down the road. If you want absolute luxury and quality, there is the LC 200 or other Lexus products, but with enough abuse even those will start to rattle and squeak.

All that said, with +60k miles on my 4runner, I've had few if any noticeable rattles and sounds and I'm generally quite impressed with how well it has held up despite all the abuse I subject it to. And I also don't drive my 4runner like a Raptor or trophy truck. It's a road-going 4x4, so if you drive like an idiot on rough roads, stuff is going to start to break.

No rattles, however there is a broken clip or something behind the hatch door panel. I can hear it every time I open up the back. Why don't you just take it out? <--- Trust me, I ask myself the same thing.

i will do this, in my mind i have determined that the sound must be a label vibrating a wiring harness--but i thought i'd need to dig into the dash...i have a feeling you found it for me!

Buzzing from Drivers side of dash

I have a buzzing from what sounded like the drivers side of the dash from 55-65mph. Took it in to the dealer, and they identified that it was part of the switch group on the left side of the steering wheel. They order the part, and I just need to make an appointment to have it replaced- they won't give me the part to install since it is under warranty.

Just thought I'd document it for others. There's a panel on the back left side of the steering wheel that pops off, and if you press on the switches/wires behind that, the sound goes away.

2014 sr5 premium here with 35k miles

When I apply the brake, I hear what sounds like air being pumped. Hard to explain but annoys that crap out of me when there's no music on to hide the sound. I checked all around the area but can't seem to figure out where it's coming from.

Noticed last week that when I shift from P to any other gear, it makes a squeak. Sometimes it'll do the same when going back to P but not as often as shifting from P.

Any yea, the same problem with other people's driver side window here too. Doesn't annoy me too much though

All of my Toyota's eventually work any rattle out. Not sure how or why, but grateful they eventually fade away.

2016.. i have a rattle in passenger side dash.. swear its in the glove box or cabin filter.. but i stoll cant find it.. I also have the classic driver front wheel well splash guard rattle.. gonna try some RTV on the push in clips...

2014 TEP with absolutely no rattles or squeaks at all....
Right up until someone decided to help themselves to the radar detector that I never should have bought.
This resulted in passenger window glass going down every ventilation/air vent or other such opening in my dash.
Now I get a nice bright crunching sound over sharp bumps.
That little corksucker has made my nice, solid and quiet, 4runner sound like an old beater pickup.

I've got a rattle in the cargo area now that's driving me bonkers. Cant tell if it's the back seats, or the hatch. Im about to set this truck on fire if I can't figure it out.

Check the hatch striker. I had an insane rattle going over small bumps that also drove me bonkers. I wrapped the the hatch bar with some electrical tape and sprayed some white lithium grease on the striker which helps a lot. Every 3 months or so I'll redo it just to keep it calm.

Only after I installed my Focal's in the front doors, overall still quiet and very little rattles on my 2017 with 20k miles. My wife's 2017 340i rattles and creaks like a 90's Chevy.
