sooo sad!!

My theory is once in an accident, the vehicle is not going to be the same.

What's the basis for that load a crap insane theory! As long as they use factory parts and there is no frame or the unibody that sits on the frame is'nt damaged ,it should be as good as new.
Front fenders, bumpers ,doors, lift gate are all bolt on parts.
All they did was replace the removable bumper cover. It's a bolt on piece of plastic for crying out loud. Any good body shop painter will paint a spot on a piece of scrap metal or the old bumper cover in her case with the paint, match it up to the truck and then go back and lighten or darken as needed before they shoot the bumper.
At least 90% of all wrecks these days are rear end collisions so this is what they do daily for a profession. My new bumpers paint matches better then the factory had it, because the painter I know is good and cares about quality work and his rep. He was proud to show me how good it matched!

When they are on the assembly line new, the whole truck was not painted together as one. All the little parts were painted some place else and then bolted on later as it came down the line. If you look close you can tell.

Don't worry ,your truck will be as good as new! or make them repaint it.

Well, the body shop finally got in the new bumper and molding this week and I should be able to pick up my 4R tomorrow. I'm worried about the paint though ... the estimator told me that blizzard pearl is a difficult color to match, so they might have to 'blend' the new paint by painting some of the fender - WTF?! The thought of them having to do all of this to my NEW RIG is making me sick to my stomach. If I get there tomorrow and the color on the new bumper is obviously "off" I'm going to be PISSED!! I admit I know nothing about paint but I don't see any reason to accept anything less than perfect. Am I being unreasonable??

:dammit:

This seems a little strange to me. I can get a small tube of FACTORY liquid 'touch-up' paint for my truck if I want it. Why can the repair shops or dealer not get a larger quantity for the shop to spray on??? I know with boats we use gelcoat from the maker to insure a perfect match. Only if we are doing very very minor touch ups will be 'color match' the hull. I would NOT be happy if they tried to color match my new 4R! Ask the dealer to see if they can order in the paint. I know 'harper' was going to have parts painted to match, not sure if it was using OEM paint or aftermarket though.

Most blending jobs I've seen have been quite good. They'll get the color really close and just make it transition to the point that you won't even be able to tell.

I do wonder about getting repairs on the blizzard pearl, though. I can't imagine it is an cheap color to match. :( The wife wanted white, though.

guys common dont despair me by telling me blizzard paint is difficult to match. I am ordering a blizzard pearl for heavens sake!

If I am involved in accident, you can be sure i will demand that they use the exact color paint or someone else gets my business. its that simple. You can get blizzard pearl paint touch up. here is what I found it 5 seconds!

Genuine Toyota Touch-Up Paint Blizzard Pearl Color Code 070

Westwind / T4fun, I thought the same thing. I figured they would be able to just order the paint Toyota used at the factory, or since I took it to the dealer, that they would just have some blizzard pearl paint laying around, but apparently it isn't quite that easy, unfortunately .. the estimator gave me various reasons why sometimes the paint won't match (evaporation rate, application method, metallic/mica elements 'laying down' differently), but I zoned her out after about 5 seconds of this and just thought, gimme all the excuses you want; if it doesn't look as good as it was when I bought it you better take a bumper off one of the trucks on the lot and replace it!!

I'm hoping they were just trying to set my expectations low or something, and that Harper is right and they'll do a great job. It can't be the first job w/blizzard pearl that they've done. We'll see tomorrow!

All in all though, I do still love the Blizzard Pearl!

Sorry about your wreck! I almost got into a wreck in my new Trail edition last weekend when some fool ran a redlight - luckily my brake assist kicked in and helped bring my truck to a stop in time.

I wouldn't worry about the paint match-up. I've had bumpers replaced in the past and I could never tell I had been in a wreck :)

Pearl paints are 3 part paints and are base coat, pearl coat and clear coat instead of base coat and clear coat like regular paints. That's why they cost more from the factory, not because it's a better grade of paint. It is little harder to match but good body shops will not have a problem.Like I said ,painters spray test panels and tint it lighter or darker accordingly to match. If they have the old part from the wreck, like they do in your case, that is what they usually use to match it.

Toyota does not sell "factory Toyota paint" unless it's in those little touch up bottles and even that is not the paint they used to paint your truck. It is just the match of the right color. That's because Toyota does'nt make paint, they buy it and usually from more then one supplier.Go to any dealers of any makes parts dept. and ask to buy a quart of OEM factory paint and they don't sell it?They will give you names of paint suppliers that mix and sell paint and tell you where to find your code.

English Color is the main auto paint supplier down here in Texas. The paint on your truck has a code on your drivers door for them to mix it. My silver is 1F7 and your BP is 070. Those are codes that tell them what ingredients(resin, pigment and solvent) and how much of each ingredient to mix to get that color of paint. It's all in a online data base. They can use that code to mix your paint from any of the paint manufacturers ,such as PPG or Dupont, which are the main ones.PPG is what my body shop used and probably yours too.Ask them.I won't even get into different grades of urethane clearcoats that are used.

Thanks for explaining what the codes mean. That's very interesting.

are those solid the whole way through or hollow tube like most bumpers and some of the "step guards" they have on trucks? If so, the instant someone whacks that thing hard enuf it will crumple just like those tube step rails that were never intended to be true rock rails. And probably end up doing more damage in the process. I'd rather invest in a good hitch and a ball....a move to keep your stuff is to flip the hitch, so the drop faces up, not down...that will protect your bumper a lil more.

Thanks for the info, Harper - good to know! You're the man!

Well, I went to the body shop to pick up my truck, and sho'nuff, the bumper looked brighter (whiter) than the rest of the car. It was very slight, but definitely noticable to me. The estimator agreed, so they're going to repaint and said they'd have it ready tomorrow.

*SIGH*

Unfortunately, that happens. The other reason is because of the different materials on your vehicle. When I got my Mazda6 brand new, there were 3 different shades of white on the car. The front and rear bumper were whiter than the rest of the car and the side moldings were yellower. Over time, the side moldings got yellower and I notice that on all Mazdas. Apparently the paint reacts to that rubber material. Why they still use that on new vehicles is beyond me. The bumper, being plastic was a slightly different shade then the rest of the car which was metallic. When brand new, you might not notice, but over time, you'll start to see it.

Good luck with it and I'm glad the shop is willing to repaint it. My friend was lucky because he took it to my buddy's body shop. Insurance paid to have the hood, roof, and right side repainted due to an accident. Because the car was a 1990 car, they had no hope of making all the paint match. He ended up repainting his whole car at no extra cost just cause it was a friend I referred (mind you, I've been dealing with them for over 10 years now). Basically, the owner told me he was not happy with the paint on my friend's car and was not willing to leave it like that so he just had the car repainted entirely for him.
