Sound System Question

I have a 94 4Runner which has the stock audio system with the AM/FM and Cassette options. I want to change that out with the factory unit that has AM/FM - Cassette - CD.

Ideally, I would like to find one that was taken from a 94 - but I am not expecting to be so lucky.

I need to know which units will actually fit in my vehicle plug and play. Will units from other vehicles fit etc..

Any advice greatly appreciated as I do not want to buy something on EBAY and have it be wrong.

I was hoping there would be a cross reference chart that would list all of the systems and vehicles that fit etc... but I cant find anything.

Toyota wiring was standard until at least the late 90's. Anything you find until then should work. Mounts are standard DIN, and connectors stayed the same, so it'll be easy.

yup. i changed the headunit out in both my 93 and my 87 and it was the same connecting wires and everything. pretty simple actually

Being new to all of this....when you state "Mounts are standard DIN" what exactly does that mean? Does it mean that all of the actual units are the same size and that any one up until late nineties will fit? Is double DIN the bigger taller unit and single DIN the shorter one?

Am I completely lost?

There is an industry standard for automotive radios called 'DIN'. A standard, or 'single-DIN' unit would fit in your dash with a spacer above or below, while a 'double-DIN' would use both spaces. 99% of aftermarket radios come in either single or double DIN sizes, meaning they will fit in a standard or double DIN opening.

Toyota and Honda were generally the best at using this standard, while GM commonly used odd sizes.

Until the latest few years, Toyota used standard DIN size openings for it's radios, and kept the plugs configuration the same. This allows you to use any Toyota radio from a few decades in your truck without having to modify anything. The plugs and screw holes will match up.

Toyota is really great about using designs for a long period of time. The drum brakes on a 1st gen 4Runner are nearly identical to the ones all the way up to the mid 2000's (maybe beyond) on the Tacomas.
