speaker size clarification question

Yeah. I have Memphis MC Series 5-1/4" in the rear and they don't come close to the sound in the front. I believe true potential could lie in maybe giving front and rear their own amplifiers and then sizing up the rear speakers and fabricating a mounting bracket out of wood for them. I would do 6-1/2" next time.

Although sound quality doesn't reside in speaker diameter, it wouldn't hurt.

No need for that much wattage to the rear speakers. The main problem is sound direction. The rear sound sucks from the perspective of the front seats.

I have Kappa 6x9s in the rear, running 70W RMS each speaker and they sound great ............ If you are sitting in the rear.

It wouldn't be too much wattage. You don't have to go purchase a high output amplifier for the rears. Having two amps is a little much for someone just throwing in speakers, but its certainly a route that could be taken to gain volume in the rear. Trust me, my rear speakers are dull compared to my front speakers, and my amplifier feeds both front and rear an almost comparable wattage. I have put my ear up to the speaker and it doesn't sound as great as the fronts. And I have had friends in the backseat asking why the rears aren't as loud. But I also have 5-1/4" and you have 6x9's.

But you are damn correct. Their direction is at most peoples feet. And last time I was in biology class, I remember something about someone saying we hear from our ears, not our feet.

So to continue off of what you said about sound direction, I would say a good counter would be to install a component system in the rear, and fabricate a mounting location for tweeters, preferably higher on the door, near our ears! But that is of course the route for someone who is searching for a competition sound system. This idea would be a typical waste of time for the average listener.

My girlfriends Passat has the same setup front and rear as we do in our fronts. And her rear tweeters are bright, making the rear more appealing. As well, cars just have better sound positioning. They can have 2 6x9's behind the rear seat headrests, and the rear window projects all of the sound forward, towards the passengers, but we don't get that luxury, being in a brick-shaped vehicle

i was replacing the drivers side oem power lock actuator and i forgot i replaced the front speaers with a 5.5" boston acoustic. maybe ill throw those in the back ad replace the fronts with something that fits.

Yeah I'm going to stick to my guns on this one .... If you buy a quality amp with decent output (eg 50W RMS) and you have decent speakers and you run proper 4G amp wiring and you run new speaker wire (14G) to all doors ..... Then it should sound great in the rear.

My rear Kappas have 70W RMS each and sound great. Why would I need 120 or 150W?
If they didn't sound good with my setup it would be because something is wrong.

When I say they sound great I mean they sound (when playing a track that was recorded well) freaking loud as hell when turned up and still very clean with near 0 audible distortion.

Of course I have 4V pre-outs and my head unit is about 105db s/n ratio (I would have to check)

But despite all of that when sitting in the front I mainly hear the front components because they are directionally pointed at my ears. This is fine because you only need 2 channels for stereo anyways. I think of the rear speakers as being for just that ... The rear, meaning the rear passengers.
