Sprint Booster question

I saw these videos and thought they looked interesting. The lag from the throttle to the valve really gets reduced, and the response in race mode is pretty much a direct reflection of where the pedal is at.

Are the effects shown in the videos legitimate?

All the reviews love it and one guy did a 0-60 test (slow BMW) and knocked off .5 sec. I ordered one, but haven't installed it yet.
Sprint Booster

Order it from Jason. Unfortunately mine was already shipped when I figured this out. Would rather support a fellow T4R owner.

It's real money for something that doesn't even reprogram the engine computers to give you slightly more power.

Everyone who has one swears by it.

I have driven a 4Runner with one, not mine, and didn't realize it was there.

They work well. Selling my pedal commander (same thing different brand) for $250 if your interested. You can have a whole range of settings to suit driving conditions and styles. Hear it's really good for towing as well (I never tow tho).

I want money for armor tho so I'll live with stock mapping for meow.

I bought one to see what the fuss is about.

It does make a difference in pedal response feel, doesn't add more power but in my opinion lets you tap into what is there - better.

I like it.

I've got "Green" set on 3 and "Red" set on 6. That said I keep it on green and have started to see a MPG improvement oddly enough.

The videos are not legit. It is a marketing commercial.

The "output" that it shows is not the truck throttle response, it is the output of the gas pedal itself. All it is showing you is that the device pushes the gas pedal harder for you.

The truck lag is not reduced. It does not make electricity flow faster. If anything, it adds lag since it has an extra computer to go through (would be a microscopic amount).

That all being said, they do make it feel better, nicer drivability. It's just alot of money to pay for it.

It's not pushing harder, but changing the curve.its all drive by wire stuff. The actual timing of the computer delay is in nanoseconds. You wouldn't notice 50 more pieces of electronics in there.

The stock ECU dampens the throttle response to keep your mpg up. Sprintbooster just bypasses it and inserts its own.

It does not bypass it. It does not modify the stock ecu in any way. The truck doesn't even know that sprint booster is installed.
Also, it does not modify the stock curve, but yes it adds to it

As far as the ecu is concerned, you are just pushing the gas pedal like normal

I installed one over the winter on my v8. I ride on green 9. You eventually get used to it but initially it makes a huge difference in the feel of the truck.

It plugs directly into you pedal. Everyone that says it makes no difference is a fool or drive one on a low setting. Highly recommended. The price and return is incomparable to anything else you do performance wise on your truck. I have Dt long tubes. Dt y pipe and Gibson exhaust and the booster was the one mod that had the most significant but dyno results.

It’s not making your truck faster it changes the feel of the throttle depending on your setting. Compare it to riding a poorly tuned carb motorcycle and then jumping on a fuel injected bike and comparing throttle response.

I also gained a few mpg

No extra power and no extra MPGs but throttle lag is reduced. I was very skeptical about this product at first and had the same "just push the pedal down" mentality as others. My 2010 Tacoma did not have lag like my 4Runner does. I joined in on a group buy and figured I can resell if it sucks. I kept it because it did help around town driving. It works in a different manner than just opening more than you command. Throttle output is ramped up for the first bit then it's normal. So basically it fills in the gap. The race mode is pretty lame and do basically command more throttle than you're asking for.

Any gains in 1/4 mile times are simply from reducing lag time.

Yes that makes sense, the pedal is an input (sensor) to the ECU. It's most likely PWM and increases the rate or lengthens the pulses.

Either way Toyota is lame for de-tuning and engine that has so much more potential.

I bought a '19 TRD OR Pro and kept my '08 Sport. Both have the 4.0L and the '19 turns more HP and torque but it felt like a real dog compared to my '08. The Sprint Booster definitely made the '19 feel on par with my '08.

Here’s an old technical white paper (Sprint Booster A technical white paper by Dick Bipes September 2007) that evaluates the function and performance of the unit. It's from 2007 but it still seems valid, even though the design has been tweaked over the years.

Here's the paper's conclusion:
"The Sprint Booster is a simple amplifier that multiplies the accelerator pedal sensor signal, making the accelerator pedal more sensitive. It does not eliminate any significant delay in throttle response, nor does it greatly improve acceleration figures. It does not change the adaptive throttle control programming of electronic throttle control vehicles. It does change pedal “feel”. This change in feel is interpreted by some as improved throttle response, acceleration, and a change in adaptive throttle control programming. Considering what it actually does, it is expensive. '

Most things are too expensive. I picked up mine on sale for a bit over $200 (edit: MiniMania $231.99). It does make a noticeable difference/increases enjoyment IMHO. Is there a cheaper option out there?

Yes, I am slightly bummed that I could have a V8 Tundra and get slightly less MPG.

I agree. Though I don't think it is directly Toyota fault. This is all because of the EPA. They need to fall I to strict mpg guidelines
