Steel City Racing: King of the Hammers 2019 Toyota 4Runner IFS 4600 Build Thread

I'm keeping everything as stock as possible. I want this to look like a 4Runner, not a buggie.

With that said, we'll be doing half doors - junkyard doors with the guts pulled out, but still look stock. Leaving cats. Spare will be in the cargo area behind the fuel cell.

Dash trim will be in tact (it weights nothing) and we'll try to remove as little electrical as possible (electrical and fuel causes the biggest issues at KOH).

Does this help?
I hope this is a joke.

Your 4Runner will look like a buggy. No windows, no glass, no windshield. Racing seats, internal cage.

Telling Toby (someone who has raced in KOH) that electrical and fuel issues plague racers the most is like telling a dude on fire, that he’s on fire.

A stock 4th gen body will be plagued with body damage by the time you finish the first lap, if that happens of course.

What you’re about to do is the first of its kind, taking a mildly built 4Runner and racing at KOH without running any of those trails in the past. First of its kind level of ignorance maybe.

More power to you. Excited to see how far your wallet takes you, but this is not going to be as easy as your attitude seems to think it is.

Thanks, but I think you're on the wrong forum. Go here: www.pirate4x4.com - I'm getting a lot of similar comments on there and expected them (and ignore them). But I was expecting more from T4R.

Anyone doing anything new is at risk of failure. I'm not afraid of failing - I'm afraid of not trying.

And check out the rendering - it's much more of a 4runner than a buggy IMO! 4600 class rules, by the way they are written, dictate that it look like a 4Runner - which I like.

How many times have you been out to Johnson Valley before and driven the course?

What course?

The course isn't released until just before the race. Our team plans to be in JV for testing in Dec and Jan. We'll then pre-run in Feb a few days before the race, after the course is released.

I've personally never wheeled in JV (Moab + East Coast Only), but my team has as much experience as anyone. That's why I'm going out a few months early for training - some of which will be with a member of the O13 who raced KOH the very first time.

We'll also have professional shock tuners and mechanics there with us weeks before the race, in addition to a full pit crew of course during the race.

This sounds like an interesting idea and I always like seeing people take a new approach to an old(ish) problem. Looking forward to seeing how this turns out. If it goes well enough, I may even trek out to JV to watch/help out. I've had a couple of friends do KOH on motorcycles, but none in trucks . . .

Awesome! Would love to see you there.

Look at his age. Enough said. You can't fail unless you try, right? If it was easy everyone would do it so props to at least giving it a try! I hope you make it thru and I think it's cool that someone is even giving it a shot.

Honestly not worried about it, but is it normal for the check engine and VSC Off lights to come on after installing the URD Y Pipe?

All O2 sensors are back in the correct spots but the Offroad Y-Pipe does eliminate the 3rd cat which likely throws a code.

Just curious.

URD web site says 'no light'...
"The URD off road Y Pipe does include ports for the rear O2 sensors. It will not cause a check engine light from eliminating the rear catalytic converters. We also include and extra O2 bung for easy installation of an aftermarket wideband display sensor."

Did you disconnect the battery after install?
May have to call Gadget.

Poking around on the URD site...
I would want to install these if this was my project...if its not against the rules.
https://www.urdusa.com/170-degree-performance-thermostat-for-2uz-fe-4-7l-v8/ lower engine heat
And
https://www.urdusa.com/urd-2005-2009-4runner-v8-fuel-pumpfilter-upgrade-kit/ gets the fuel filter out of the tank...guess if your running a fuel cell then the OEM filter will be gone anyway.

I pulled the EFI 20 fuse, but will see if disconnecting the battery works tonight.

Already bought the 170 Degree Thermostat and Fuel Upgrade (TBD on how it works with a fuel cell though). They are both in the garage.

Gadget has been great to help us with this build!

One more question. I bought a AEM Air / Fuel Ratio gauge. It says to install 18” downstream, but before cats.

The URD Y-Pipe has an extra bung for it. But the bung is of course after the cats and 90 Degress vs 80 or 110 degrees (10 degree angle).

I couldn’t see a good spot before the cats that was far enough downstream and am thinking of doing after the cats in the URD Y-Pipe hole even though it isn’t perfect.

Think this will work?

Cut the cats off, they're totally useless for racing and only have down sides having them on. Then trick the post-cat O2 sensor if you're worried about the light.

I may swap to hi-flow cats if/when the headers go on, but it feels and sounds really good with the cats on right now. I like it being a bit of a sleeper and not sound obnoxiously loud.

Battery reset didn’t affect anything. I’m fine with VSC off. But still weird it’s throwing a code.

Excellent contribution to the thread. Why don’t you take your bunched up panties elsewhere?

You'll have to pull the code before we know what's causing it. VSC off is pretty common when the check engine light comes on.

Code:
"P0031 - Heated Oxygen Sensor Heater Control Circuit Low Bank 1 Sensor 1" and P0031 came up 3 other times too.

Also had "C1223 - Malfunction in Antilock Brake System Control System", and "C1201 - Engine Control System Malfunction" which I assume are all due to the O2 Sensor code causing VSC to go off.

I also pinged Gadget as it isn't supposed to throw a code.

It's nice to have VSC off. Although I'd rather put a switch in to turn it off on demand.
