Stolen Ignition Key

Long story short, the thieves have a key to start my car. I have taken the battery out for the time being to prevent this. I called a few dealers around me just to see what my options were and check prices. For a new ignition cylinder, two door locks, new keys and reprogram was $1450. However only reprogramming the key was $60. Does the TIS techstream software allow me to do this myself? I understand that the thieves will still be able to get, but at least they can't drive away, and I think that is the best compromise.

So if you have a TIS scantool with relatively current Software, you should be able to erase the Transponder Key Memory (the Factory TIS TechStream will do this, I have not checked with the Chinese units.) You need at least 2 Master Key (maybe one? I forget since we usually do this programming new keys vs. your situation) to do this as it will need to be reprogrammed. Basically what you're doing is erasing the memory, relearning the keys you have so the immobilizer won't crank over with the stolen key. As you pointed out, they can still get in; but the vehicle will not start as it is no longer a valid key.
 
I don't think the eBay cables will work for re-programming keys to the immobilizer. I had to take mine into a shop with a Mongoose cable after I installed my Toyota remote starter.
 
Considering this is something you are doing to prevent theft or damage to your vehicle, have you looked into having your insurance pay for it? The alternative is the vehicle is stolen, which would be a bigger loss for them.

1) How did the thieves get your key yet they don't have your truck yet?
2) Do you own a gun?
 
I called, insurance isn't helping me on this one. I found a cheaper price ($60). So I might abandon this idea, but it's still good to know.

No I don't have a gun but I am a decent shot, but plenty baseball bats, golf clubs... The avatar thing may say I live in Golden but that's only for school. In the summer, I am home in Chicago. It's not a bad part of town by any means, but there has been crime at my house before. The car is parked in an alley. My best guess is that some hoodlums were just walking through and tried my car. There have been 8 reports in the last 2 days of the same stuff happening btw. Cops are crawling all over now. For whatever reason, my car must've been unlocked. That was either do to my sister driving it, forgetting to lock it, whatever, it was mistake number one.

In Colorado, I like to hike, bike, ski, and whatnot. All of the sports have a potential for keys to be lost. Therefore I have a hidden key system. There is an "only door" key hidden with a magnet between the frame and the body. (the thieves did not find this) Using said key, I would then use a fully functioning key that I *sighs* keep in the center console.

INTERMISSION: Thieves open unlocked car, find car key inside.

Using this key, they tried to start it. This is where it gets weird and why I think they are amateurs. They didn't completely start it, just gave it a quick crank. I heard that noise, grabbed my key and hit the alarm. They took off, only taking the key and 3 dollar coins. Not my knife, sunglasses, tools, pump...

Yes things could've been done differently, but now I know.

I took everything of value out, but I would rather keep the car, so I took the battery out and deflated a tire.

I'm drunk and nut quite getting this

Thieves were in your car
Found your hidden "start the engine" key
Did not start the engine and steal your car
but took $3 in change

And now you are worried they will steal your car
???

My best thought is they went for the quick cash...your key probably got thrown off a bridge :confused:
 
First off, that sucks but you have insurance so if they do steal it or contents inside they you are covered, yeah? I mean that's not ideal but doesn't sound like you want to spend $1500 to ensure that key they have is irrelevant so there you have it.
 
Here is what I would do bro:

1) Get yourself a battery powered motion detector. Put it under the truck pointing towards the drivers door.

2) I can't post #2 for legal/trackability reasons but I can tell you this. If I catch somebody breaking into my house or vehicle it's going to be a very, very bad day for them. I have no sympathy, empathy or caring for scumbag thieves.

Let your mind wonder on #2.
