Stolen spare tire....

OK I just called Motivelocks and they don't sell direct. Does anyone have a good supplier for the Winchlock? I have a 2005 T4R SE. Thanks again for your assistance.

i also had my spare stolen...and am trying to find a cheapish way to replace it...

my car got towed a month and a half ago, i went and got it from the pound..no big deal, just a dent in the wallet...about 3 weeks later, i noticed that my spare was missing..have to file a claim form at the pound, and give them 3 estimates for replacing it, but i've got a feeling i won't be getting any money from them...

i have a 3rd gen, and live in chicago..anyone know of any good suppliers for used rims etc?

How about using one of those 1st-2nd gen chain-type spare holders? At least the chain would probably be more difficult to cut. I also work in a dumpy area of town, but our company has a fenced-in parking lot and guards with guns, so no problems w/ thieves.
 
I have a second gen with the carrier on the back. it has a stud for a padlock (lot of good those do) but the best thing I can do is buying a set of locking lugs. that and when ever i can i park in a stall that has a wall at the back and I back in. That way theres no room to get tools in, let alone the sapre off, unless of course they jsut unbolt the whole bloody carrier
 
This lock is very easy to install. Look back at the installs from other members and its a piece of cake.

It just arrived today. I havent had time to look at it yet, but seems like it should be a breeze to install. Will work on installing it tonight after work. The place I ordered it from was prompt in sending it, but did not respond to the few emails I sent them. So great price, quick shipping, bad communication. Just and fyi for anyone else interested in getting one of these.

Installation was a breeze, though one caveat. It comes with 2 washers, one to go on either side of the bolt. The one to go inside the casing was too large, it wouldnt sit straight. So i went to home depot and got a 3/8" stainless that was slightly smaller in diameter, and everything went smooth from there. The instructions were easy to follow, and when combined with people's install tales from this thread, it was hardly a challenge.

That sucks about your tire. just be happy it wasn't the entire car. had my Jeep stolen twice. 2nd time was complete write-off. but it all worked out, i now own a 97 4runner.

For those of you who own the Winchlock system. If the key is tubular like the website says, beware. If they're anything like Kryptonite bike locks, they can be opened with one of those round white Bic pens. Is the slot for the key the same size as the pen? if so, take the empty tube, heat the end until it's soft enough, cram it in the hole, let it hardened, and bingo, $0.25 key opens the lock.

if it's not a round key and the sizes don't match, just ignore me.

I do use something similar: a big thik chain covered in plastic which can be bought in any hardware store and a key lock. The platic cover is maily to avoid rattle and of course oxidation. I like your idea though of putting a plastic bag over the lock to keep water out.

Yep Piece of cake to install.
I didn't have a problem with the washers. They fit fine. The hardest part was lining up the pole with the lug nut space.
 
just out of curiousity how easy is it to remove the spare tire with the lock if i really get a puncture? What would be needed?
 
hmm, i read on a thread the 4th gen. that the spare tire only comes out via the trunk using your tire jack? true or false?
 
You just need to have the key. The lock is not left in an inaccessible position. You will have to get under the vehicle a bit. Just under rear bumper.
Unlock and follow rest of steps for changing a the spare.

But if your in the city, call AAA or other travel assistance. If your on the trail then your probably not dressed in a suit anyway.

General question for anyone that's installed this spare tire lock. The initial drill to 3/8", is that so the bolt can be screwed in it or is it just to allow the bolt to get through the hole, and there's a nut to actually hold the bolt?

It looks like a tight fit to get the bolt in if a nut is required. Just thought I'd ask the experts first.

hey I just ordered one(Heavy Duty one), but it doesn't come with the U-bracket; how maddening to find a missing piece. I ordered from Automotive Acessorires Connection. Just informing you guys. I'll have to call them on Monday to see what the heck happened.

Yes, there is an existing hole you need to drill out to make it bigger. It's been a while but I don't remember it being hard to get the nut in the space.
 
I had my spare tire stolen off my 3rd gen in a valet parking area while i was in chicago. They cut the cable on mine also. I still haven't replaced it.
 
Locks are cool and everything but here's a better idea...

Buy a 1.5 farad stereo capacitor and connect that sucker straight to the car battery. Then run some alligator clips from the cap to the wheel of the spare and viola! electrified spare. Of course you would need to put a rubber bushing between the cable holder and the wheel itself, but other than that the wheel is entirely insulated by the rubber tire. You could even wire it to the alarm on your car to energize the tire when the doors lock and set off the alarm when the capacitor has been discharged.

That should teach someone not to f*ck w/ your spare...
