Sunroof rehab / parts replacement advice needed

I tore out my sun roof this afternoon to try to figure out what was wrong with it and why I would get water dripping from the front of the headliner when it rained and found more problems then I was hoping for although it wasn't that much effort to take the thing completely out. Attached are a few picture and hoping for advice on what's worth replacing and possibly part numbers although I think buying parts from the dealer is going to be way to much money so I may try to find one in a junk yard.

Gear in the sun roof that the motor turns to open and close I assume. Rusted out and pretty trashed

Motor and gear that's rusted and rounded from being rusted

The sunroof seems to use the copper looking tubes form maybe the track or something from the gear. Is this replaceable?

I think if I get a new motor and the copper tubing piece that the gear is in replaced my unit may work.

The roof control box ( no picture ) clicks when I push the buttons on the head liner

Any help would be awesome, any one ever pulled there sun roof out? Worth fixing or should I just weld in a panel in the roof?

Looks like it might be easier to just replace the sunroof track / drain assembly. So many little parts and screws I can't get to.

So now looking for the part number or service manual diagram.

When I got mine, the previous owner had sealed the sunroof shut as it had been leaking, probably pretty similar to yours.

I went to a junkyard and for $70 got a complete sunroof assembly with motor and tracks. It was a pain in the butt, but pretty simple to replace.

Does the sunroof have a lock? Roof control box is clicking when activating the slide button but the glass isn't sliding.

I just picked up a complete assembly from the wrecking yard and it's doing the same thing as my original. Just clicking.

Seems like this one I got from the junk yard has a similar issue to what others have had from reading stuff after searching for help. The factory grease or what ever the gray gunk that is cake all over the track and cable gear area hardens overtime or something and the motor can not push or pull the cable through it.

Junkyard gave me a 15 day warranty so it's going back find one that actually works

Sunroof Leaking

I had the same problem with the sunroof leaking and showing water on the headliner or when I braked and it was raining it would drip two or three times.

I went to Toyota and they told me that there are two drains on the sunroof that can get clogged. Since the first time they did that I have them check other oil change. (oil change ever 5k with Amsoil Synthetic)

it didn't seem like it was one of the front drains but I didn't really even pay to much attention to them when I pulled the assembly out. I just wish I could get my sunroof to actually open

Weather it to nice in Southern California to have a vehicle with a sun roof that doesn't work

In my 3+ years of ownership, it has never worked and I haven't bothered to fix it. I found my sunroof to be more trouble than it's worth. Mine was leaking water so I RTV'd the window shut and haven't looked back. If I really wanted to reverse it, I could cut away the RTV in a matter of minutes, but why do it? It'll cost a ton of money to fix, a ton of time, and it's a 21 year old truck

it beginning to think that as well, but if I pull it out completely I am going to weld in a sheet metal patch.

Its really not that hard to pull the headliner and replace the sun roof assembly just finding one that works seems to be difficult and buying a new one is way to expensive.

May be a long shot, but if you have a high amp 12v drill battery (I have a 6ah Milwaukee M12) you may be able to jump a junkyard motor to test it before pulling and buying it. Even if it moves slightly, you'd know.



I've used the M12 battery to charge my wife's old Rav4 battery enough to start it (it was 'barely' dead though, and that's charging, not flat out starting).

salvage yard pulled another one for me, Ill be driving my 4runner to them and testing it in the parking lot. They didn't want to "bench" test it for me said the thing might lose its memory or some crap and not work. Kind of think that's BS but what ever they will keep pulling them until I find one that works.

two of them at the salvage yard didn't work. They are being great with me and said they will keep trying to find one that works for me one way or another. Only thing is they are like 54 miles away one way. so at some point ill give up and just seal it with silicone if I cant find something that works

It looks like moisture gets to the cable in the track and rusts the cable solid. I notices on all the units I've looked at including mine the tracks have rust on them.

I have sprayed kerosene, WD40, penetrating liquid, and blown compressed air through the track tubes and still locked up rusted solid.

I do this all the time to test motors. Even 9v cordless drill batteries will work, just bring a simple set of small alligator clamp wires. Find the power wire and ground on the motor (there's only 2 wires) and fire it up. It will either work or it won't. Saves you the trouble of installing it to find out.

Makes no sense to me either, but food for thought.

I would also really like to know how to fix the “sunroof click” .... (got to be answer out there) I have next to no solution other than just finding more people with the same problem and only a $600-1,200 dealer fix with know mentioning why they did to fix it...

Then again i May just he searching poorly or missed it....
