Sunroof water leak

I think I found out why our 3rd gen sunroof leak after taking mine trough the car wash with the headliner out.

The Drip tray/ track is two pieces it looks like and the seal appears to have deteriorated as evident by the rust.

Also the factory hose clamps that hold the hose to the drip tray seem to have gotten weak over time and didnt seal and water was dripping there

Hardest part was my driver grab handle stripped a bolt so I had to bend it out of the way to pull the plastic panel down.

Also the little plastic clips that hold the back of the headliner to the roof broke.

If you have patience and don't just start prying stuff out till it breaks it's actually really easy to remove. It slide right out the back hath after all the panels and grab handles were removed

We are going to attempt to unplug my lines and hopefully that does it.
But if not it’s good to hear it’s that tough of a job to remove the headliner.
I was kinda dreading having to remove it.

Removing headliners, with the intent to put it back, in all of my past and current vehicles has been harder than hoped. Sounds like here is no different...

Does the rubber gasket on the moonroof surrounding the glass have any small holes that might allow water ingress?

When shopping for a T4R, I saw a few that showed signs of such issues, and inspection of that gasket reveals small perforations, probably the cause. Once water does get in, it should ideally be caught and channeled by the gutter system, then funneled down and away through the various downspout-like holes which I guess have hoses connected to different locations to be expelled...

Just like I do up on our house's roof at the end of every fall, I'll likely check and clean the gutters on the T4R and blow-out the "downspouts".

id remove the glass and access the front drip lines from the roof. I am pretty sure that would be a lot easier than removing the headliner.

I realty think their is a design flaw in the way Toyota made the drip channel. Its two pieces. Where the picture I took is where my sunroof leaks. I have looked at 4 sun roof track assemblies and they all have had rust on that area or the tubes the sun roof cable is in indicating moisture is getting in these things some how.

Also when moisture get in this area it rusts and corrodes the sun roof cable and lock it solid in the track tube.

It wasn't real hard, just kind of a long process. The interior panel tools you can buy at auto parts stores make getting all the christmas tree clips out SO much easier.

Mine was leaking and lucky for me it was just a buildup of crud around the inside edge of the roof where the gasket contacted. I really thought it was gonna be a ***** at first. Very relieved it was just crud.

Leaking? It was. I could see on the headliner it had been leaking some, and also a gum wrapper was up there (?). It appeared to be much worse with the liner out than with it in.
All 4 drains were open and free-flowing.

Reinforces why I wanted to keep it simple, no moon/sunroof, as as well as other "perks"... And yes, I got a Limited with such though.

The best way to not strip those little brass screws that are EVERWHERE on these rigs, especially in the ceiling?....Impact driver. Even the $20 one from HF works wonders on those things.

The headliner is not that difficult to remove, especially once you've done it before. Just keep a box for all your screws, etc, and you'll be fine.
I got both the headliner and carpet (including seats and center console) out a few weeks ago in less than 45 minutes about a month ago. Again, use an impact driver.

I saw someone (forget who) who tapped the 4 holes that hold the headliner up in the cargo area and installed small eyelet screws so he could hang a cargo net from the top. I might need to do this, as I broke the little clips the first time I removed them. Of course, the headliner hasn't fallen yet and it's been over 2 years, so maybe they aren't that important.

I still don't understand the point of the drip tray vs just making the sunroof a watertight unit... but I'm no engineer.

Removing the glass, motor and related stuff, you should have made it less top heavy also. Something I will consider too, before a paint job...

do you have the file you used to cut out the sheet metal so perfectly?

I am heavily considering this option. Plus I would then wouldn't mind a larger roof rack.

If anyone has a template for the moon/sun roof opening, I too would be very interested.

Looks like there is no sun or moonroof delete thread. Likely not popular of course...

No unfortunately i didn't make a template. It was really easy to do though. Once you remove all the sunroof components just lay a piece of cardboard on top and trace out the hole. There was a bit of grinding to make it lay in perfectly but was by far the easiest part of the bodywork on my truck.

I've been running without a headliner for a few weeks now, and I can confirm that my drains are clear, but I still get slow drips from the seam in the channel shown in the pictures here.

Anyone else encounter this? Can anyone who has dismantled a sunroof offer any insight?

I actually have one one with water coming through the sunroof itself. If your drains are clear it's possible that the sunroof itself is leaking?
