Sunvisor not folding up all the way.

Removing the second visor will not make it take any less room (I tried it). I just replaced my drivers visor with an OEM one from the stealership. It kept on flapping down with every bump taken. There is a spring inside the visor that holds it tight around the rod that clips in and this was broken/loose. I screwed in the visor and bingo!

Sun Visor Question

Have been reading about the problem with sun visors not staying up. I have been looking to replace mine with a used one. My question is I have a 04 and wondered if this part is interchangeable with other years. It’s just a standard sun visor with an unlighted mirror, a pull out plastic part on the unattached end. I think it broke from having an automatic door opener on it. I really don't want to go to the dealer as I am sure I will pay big time for this part. If I were still working it might be a different story.

I have an 04 with the same problem. It will not stay up in the stowed position. It seems that if I leave it in the down position for a few hours, it will stay up in the stowed position better. Never made the time to look at it closely yet. Seems like a common problem.
 
Has anyone had any real luck fixing their visor? Mine is starting to drop on it's own. I have priced new ones online and they are about $55. I hate to pay that kind of cash for something that should be an easy fix.

I assume it is for the unlighted. Mine isn't showing up by VIN because it didn't come with mirrors and it was a few months after the fact that they decided to give me the new visors with mirrors as stated on the sticker.

I did fix my visor but it started to drop again. Looks like i will have to buy a new visor.

Mine is getting worse. I need to bite the bullet. At 9 years old, I am finding that there are lots of little things that are starting to fail. The window scraper on the rear window gasket broke off yesterday. I guess now is the time I either get nickel and dimed to death or find something new. :shrug:
 
$55 later I have a new sun visor. I took the old one apart just to see what wears out and if it could be fixed. The answer is no. Replacement is the only option. It looks like there is a plastic bushing that wears out or it could be the metal spring. Regardless, the sunvisor is sealed and you have to destroy the cover to get to the part.
 
I just bought my 05 today and this is the first issue I have come across with it. Thanks for this thread at least saving me the time of taking it apart and trying to fix it, I will just order a new part. It is very frustrating as I am 6'1" and it was in my way the entire drive home from the dealership.

You would think that by the early 2000's sun visor technology would have all the wrinkles ironed out. Guess not.
 
I had to replace mine this year. Very happy I did. It was closing up all the way, but it was "creaking" while it was being folded up. Extremely annoying. I get annoyed easily.
 
It worked problem solved

Just tried bending my visor in my 04 4runner, and it worked like a charm. Thanks JAC

I was rushing yesterday morning and I was a little upset at my kids. Started driving to work and drove over the first speed bump at my neighborhood and there it goes the darn thing in my face... got so mad and I grabbed the darn visor thinking about braking it I pulled it down and when I felt the arm bent a little I stopped...and guess what?...I folded it back to normal and BINGO!! no more problems...no more dropping down by itself unless I do it manually . I didn't brake it but I think the inside part did bent a little. That made my morning and my mood changed right away...and my day was great.... :) try it guys It will work and the best part.....it wont' cost you a penny... hehehehe :lmao:

Crap, me too!!

I am so frustrated. I have hit my head on that darn visor so many times:rant:
I have looked into buying a new one as well but can't find one for less than $70 bucks plush shipping. So annoyed I am. Where are those $55 ones at? Are these hard to replace?
 
I think this is a Toyota problem.

My t4r does it.
My Highlander does it.
If I had a Prius, which I never would, it would probably do it too.

Grrrrr.

I was thinking about adding some sort of friction material to the inside of the little plastic bracket the visor clips into to see whether tightening that connection up would hold the visor in place.
 
My Fix

My mom drives a 4runner and was having the same issue described here. After trying velcro and attempting to take the visor apart (neither of which really worked) I came up with another cheap/easy solution. I tied some string around a keychain ring and a picture hook to make a loop that could be hooked together to support the visor. I wrapped the loop around the second smaller visor as well to help hold up the larger visor. She likes the fix and the appearance doesn't bother her. Better than having the visor in your face!

I saw a Tube video on repairs of this. It is slide visor off, put stickyback Velcro on rod then push back visor on. On this 2005 4runner, I could not slide off the Visor, I don't want to break the bracket. Any simple way to take visor off? this Velcro idea looks good.
