Surface shield by Blaster, rust control

Last year I used NHOU on the frame and a year later, it looks like nothing was done. The surface is dry and rust again.so I ordered another gallon this time to reapply. Wouldnt you know it? 2 days later, I find some videos on Blaster’s Surface Shield. From all accounts, it seems to stay put for at least two years. I ordered up a gallon from Amazon. Comparing the two products, the NHOU is like peanut butter vs surface shield which is like a latex paint in thickness. +1 for Blaster. Harbor freight had a sale on their airless paint sprayer $19 down from $40. I bought one and used it to apply Surface Shield yesterday. Worked awesome. I used a full spray bottle on the undercarriage. I recommend using a fan to blow the overspray away from you. A mask and goggles for good measure.

In the process of looking for a sprayer to apply it, I found a air undercoating spray gun on ebay for $15 shipped. The air sprayer looked like it would aerosolize the coating too much. But I was able to use the 18” flex nozzle on the harbor freight sprayer with a small conversion of the extended nozzle. I cut the end off and slipped the flex hose over the solid nozzle, hose clamped it in place. I plan to coat the inside of the frame rails next weekend.

Search out Surface Shield on youtube. Still lanolin based but guaranteed to stay for two years. For now Its wait and see but it sounds like a better product.

I've never used NHOU before. How would you say surface shield compares to fluid film?
I've got 2-1/2 gallons of fluid film to use up first.

I’m glad you found surface shield. I have never used NHOU. I live in NH so rust prevention is a priority. I have been a firm believer and user of fluid film. I buy a 12 pack of cans from Amazon and go to town. I also spray inside of frame with a 360 degree nozzle attachment. I just looked under my 2009 4Runner and the layer of FF has held up well. Many say it washes off easily but I don’t find that to be the case. I do apply it every year. Surface shield is similar to FF but I think it’s a little better because it stays on longer. Repair Geek on YouTube swears by Surface shield. I use both products. I have a 1998 Tacoma at 316K miles and the rust is minimal with the help of these products. Hope to run my 4Runner to 400K.

I used it on my 05 runner last fall seemed to hold up over the winter here in Michigan. I did not notice any "wash off" in the 6 months since I applied it give or take a month or so. It is kinda hard to find in auto parts store so I buy it online.

These products sound similar to one I used (XCP Rust Blocker - World class rust prevention protection) a sort of semi-permanent coating.

Do you clean the underside before you reapply?

I ask as I had to do mine in November last year as I had it booked in at a 'proper' undersealing place and they cancelled. So now I wonder if I should just re-apply this stuff each year. But as it is oily/waxy I would never be able to remove it all before applying a new coat.

I agree this was hard to find, until Harbor Freight started stocking it. Had the poor lady in the back looking for about 15 minutes but she finally found it. I got some wire wheel cleanup yet to do before I use it though. I have a can of Fluid Film as well that I was originally going to do as much of the inside of the frame as I could. Might just use surface blaster to do it now.

Thanks for the review on this. Definitely ended up ordering a few cans to spray on my (thankfully almost 100% rust free) 4runner. The car came out of florida and has faired very well with the minimal rusting (mainly surface) and I want to be able to do everything I can to keep it this way.

It's a rust converter and protectant. However, it's a lot of work to prep the frame to apply it. A lot of work.

I'm starting to look at the fluid film stuff that others have mentioned, seems to be a pretty good alternative even if you have to reapply it yearly.

That's kinda where I'm at.. a yearly application doesn't seem bad one bit.. not for a product that looks like it holds up pretty well. Especially for guys like me that are not in the rust belt.

You said Dry Ice clean. I know Dry Ice is used to remove undercoating. Is there a function that it serves to remove rust?

Yes it also removes surface rust, so it was perfect for my situation with minimal rust

Out of curiosity, has anyone tried POR-15? That was my go-to on old sports cars; put it on our 4Runner frames and so far has worked perfectly. You have to handle it carefully because otherwise it makes the Mother of All Messes. But I notice POR-15 doesn't seem to be a go-to method for most of you guys ... is this Fluid Film a better mousetrap?
