T Case Shift Knob Loose

Sorry if this has been discussed; I searched and didn't find anything. When I shift into 4wd the shift knob loosens in my hand because I can't tighten it down all the way or the shift pattern won't be facing right. It will be at a weird angle and that bothers me. Anyone else have this issue? Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks.

Can you thread the right size nut on to where you need the knob to stop for the pattern, then screw the knob on so it stops at the nut?

Maybe just lock tite will do the trick, too.

That's a good idea about threading a nut on there. I will try that. You have to be careful with the knob because it looks like the threads are plastic and would be east to strip. Thanks.

Keep turning that sucker until it lines up- use 2 hands!


There are a lot of fine threads in there- it won't strip by hand, even though it's plastic.

You could try wrapping the threaded portion of the rod with plumbers teflon tape. That will change the point where the knob gets real tight. Just experiment with the amount of tape you use and you will get it where you want it.

Yeah, teflon tape was another idea I had. I think I will try that first. Sorry antman, the brute force approach scares me, even though you said the plastic threads wouldn't strip. I will post my results. I'm sure the forum is waiting with anticipation.
