T-man's '05 Sport Build Thread

Hard shifting, won't shift past 3rd sometimes, no overdrive sometimes, slips into neutral between 1st and 2nd sometimes providing a nice neutral slam. Has 3 codes too. P2714, p0986, p0776.

Granny shifting, not double-clutching like it should.:biggrin1:

Sounds like a solenoid issue. Damn dude do you beat the living crap outta your truck or do you just have terrible luck?
They've been acting up for over a year. See update below with pics...
I try not to, but sometimes! Lol

So yesterday I decided to have a transmission flush done. They use this cool tool that looks like a giant shock without the shaft, but has a cylinder that separates the old fluid from the new. Hose comes out of the top and bottom. They then pull the Trans lines on the radiator and they hook them up to the cylinder. You start your truck and the pump in the Trans pulls the new fluid in and pushes the old fluid into the cylinder. It's all controlled by your Trans, no electronics, and it ran 14 liters through. Here's a pic.. New on top, old on bottom.

The old fluid literally looked like mud!!! O.o anyways, no more surging, failing to shift, random downshifts, taking forever to shift, anything. It literally hasn't shifted so good since the day I bought it 80k ago! It used to take a long time to shift onto second and it was retarded soft about it. Now it hits gears firm and immediately. It also felt like it was dragging when getting on it before, now it just goes. If the Trans doesn't fail in the next month I'm going to pull the pan and put a new filter in it too. Might look into a shift kit of some sort as well. Anything to help it spin these heavy ass tires.

I also got my shock from Oneluv13T4R to replace my broken one. Thanks bud! Wish I was anywhere near Cali to come play with you guys out there!

The filter is just a metal screen, just pull off and clean if necessary.

Edit... Glad to see it was only a fluid change thing, got lucky the way you ABUSE your shit.

Oh? Just a screen? That's dumb. Might look at an online filter one of these days them, just before the cooler.

So this has me wondering why did your ATF turn so yucky? I'm guessing you overheated the ATF few times or maybe the clutch discs (I think they're called) are coming apart. So, perhaps do a few more cycles of ATF cleaning in the next 12 months or so?

In my case, I simply drain whatever comes out during every oil change and then put in the same amount of new ATF. It's not a true flush/fill but gets the entire amount changed out over time. I tow a lot so I'm always on top of the ATF swap routine.

Well if it's never been changed before, 220k miles, towing, heavy tires, trail riding locked in 1st or 2nd gear lots of city driving, then I'm going it is just so worn out. If it's clutches etc going bad, I assume I'll find out soon. Lol

Did you have this done at toyota? What did it run you? I would love to have this done for piece of mind. Been on my mind lately anyway.

Hell no! I can't imagine what they would charge. Lol. Cost me $150 and it used 14 liters.

Did you go through a chain place, or a local mechanic? Never done a tranny flush before, so I'm clueless. I've only drained and filled.

Went to a regular drive in oil change shop. Most of them do transmission flush and things like that too. Just make sure the machine doesn't pump the fluid itself or you could potentially hurt something.

So you used WS fluid, right?

Hey man you're running 35s right? Can you do me a favor? Can you measure your vrbyer of hub to fender distance on the front?

25 1/2 passenger side front
24 1/4 drivers side front
I have an issue with drivers lean I haven't been able to take care of yet.
Don't forget, I have a 2.5" body lift too.

I audible said "what the f&#k". Then I read that you have a 2.5" body lift. And that explained it lol. Im at 23" on both sides with 885s and Bilsteins. 1/4" spacer on passenger, 3/8th on drivers. And a 1" body lift.

Looking to move to 35s. Will probably do some major fender and bumper cutting. I can't recall, did you regear? Also, roughly what are you getting for fuel mileage?

I don't remember if you have the V8, but it does pretty good with the tires. Mine are heavy! 108lbs a piece heavy! The only issues I have is climbing steep hills offroad. Mostly sandy ones. It bogs it down. Turning off traction control helps a TON!! I want gears and a rear locker.
You will have to hammer the pinch welds flat for sure. I also heated the area up and used a BFH to bash it all back about an inch. I removed most of my fender liners, but you may not have to as much. I had to trim the bottom of the front bumper, then later trimmed it more because I would catch it offroad. Had to trim fender flare behind front tire too.
For the rear I had to cut the rear bumper back about an inch losing the mud flaps.
Basically I trimmed, flexed it out on a ledge and used an oscillating saw to trim as needed. Then I cleaned up the edges with a razor afterwords. Be careful! It slips easy and you'll cut yourself! I'm good around knives and now I have a huge chunk missing from my finger... Did it at work though, cutting plastic. Some guys sand the edge.
