It was posted that it saves gas. I haven't seen long term data yet... but I have gotten my higest MPG in my last tank during the winter. 18 and change. But I feel my truck kinda kick or shudder sometimes when I do it...so I was wondering if it was harmful.

Yeah i have heard that it does save gas. A lot of the cheapos do it and i guess it adds up over time. It's not harmful to the tranny as far as i know. But you have to think, did you guys really buy an SUV to save .25mpg per stoplight? :biggrin2:

In the manual of the 3 European cars I have owned, it warns you that idling at a stop with the transmission in Drive for prolonged periods is very harmful. However, it suggests that you put it in Park if you are going to be stopped for prolonged periods of time. I don't know that it would make a difference if it is in Neutral vs. Park though. I am also a firm believer that replacing brake pads is much more cost efficient that replacing transmissions - automatics in particular. this issue may be more apt for a transmission spacialist.

No easy answer to the brake vs tranny wear question, but I'm pretty comfortable that within, say, a 200,000 mile vehicle lifespan, it's not much of an issue.
