T4R.Org's Suggested Price?

Hello All. Just wondering what you all thought was a good offer for this one? The price is way too high. KBB says $9,700 retail and $7,500 private party. Wondering if it's a stretch to show up with $8000 cash. Opinions? Thanks for the feedback. I know I've been lurking here for awhile.

DONT OVERPAY by more than $500!

If it has 145,000 then there is probably some serious maintenance right around the corner. KBB is correct.

Also, based on where the picture was taken he is probably a dealer of some type. The guys that sell cars and are not real Toyota Certified Dealers should NOT even be considered dealers in my opinion. A lot of these internet dealers really screw people over by selling cars/trucks with problems.

If the car --totally-- checks out (at your mechanic not his) then I would pay up to $9000 assuming he is one of those internet dealers. But first show up, have it tested, try not to talk cash then offer the $8000. If he refuses, walk away from the lot without blinking. If you really want it then call him and offer $8500.

BTW, the loans offices these guys work with are also designed to screw people over. He will probably try to "hook you up" with some ****ty financing, read the fine print.

I just bought a great car from a private party in Orange County, I am glad I avoided dealers.

The fact that he knows what he has with the sport package and such shows he knows a bit about how rare they are. He is obviously a dealer, and trying to make a huge profit on this one. Tell him you're on to his bull****. Offer what it's worth according to KBB, he will say "oh, but it's so rare" which it is, but bein the auto, it's not THAT rare. Then offer your 8k. Im sure he got it for less than that. If he doesn't take it, walk away. It's kind of sketchy to begin with, definitely get it checked.

I wish. Used car prices are sky high right now for dealers. Seeing his lot, I guarantee he won't take less than $10k for the truck. Not saying it's worth that, just saying...he'll easily sell it for more than $10k. Even if he bought it at auction, he easily paid $7k it, plus his fee's and recon, he's in for $8k himself.
 
Funny I saw that ad along with a different one within the same vicinity, which houses nothing but T4Rs as well as Tacomas. Also like you OP, I saw the prices and thought, "Some of these are too good to be true."
 
OK KBB is not always a good reflection of the market. NADA guide is usually a better source and what a lot of banks use these days. As to value, well consider 3 months ago my truck was "totaled" and insurance paid me $7800 for a 98 SR5 with 227,000 miles. After providing receipts for all my goodies(lift, bumpers, tires etc.) they added $150 to the value. I would say if you walk in there and the Runner is clean the 8k is not out of line and even say 8500 would still be reasonable. Some areas these are just worth more money and So. Cal is one of those areas. If you want a good idea of what it is worth call your bank and ask what they would value it at if you were to finance through them.

'01 and '02 Sports aren't very rare down here in SoCal. I see quite a few hood scoops everyday. I personally wouldn't pay more than $8000 for that truck. Maybe $8500 depending on the service records and what kind of maintenance I think will need to be done over the next year or so.

His $12K asking price is an indication that he lives on Mars though. Maybe he's just starting the price high to leave room for negotiating, but I paid $15K for mine... in 2001.. with 90K.. when it was only 4 years old!

X2...I thought only the 2002 Sports had the "Sport Edition" badge? Looks like the previous owner threw the skid plate on himself. Correct me if I am wrong. My 2001 Sport has the hood scoop but does not have the skid.

man look at that guys lot...Toyota heaven. Looks like some of those Tacos have aftermarket wheels and nice rubber on them to boot.

carfax "looks" legit. Seems to have been maintained. Cash in hand talks though I am sure he has many bites on this one being so clean and a 4WD Sport. good luck.
 
looking closer at the pics...I see "LIMITED" badges behind rear door windows...or maybe I am just seeing things. Not sure this is all adding up. He might not know what he has or his stock numbers and photos are mixed up. look closer.
 
01's didn't have sport edition badges as they were sport editions yet. Also they didn't have color matched rear plate carriers. Just an FYI.
 
clearly its a sport(and a nicely kept one) so whats up with the limited badges? Its a dealer, Low ball him and see what he comes up with as a response. Id offer him 7k and say you want the wrongly placed badges removed paint waxed and buffed out etc. I wouldn't go a penny over 8k- There's simply just to many runners out there for sale.
 
Around here on the East coast if it was in perfect running condition then you would be lucky to get that for anything under $9K.

If you think you can get it for $8K then get it, does seem a bit odd though to have "Limited" behind the rear doors and the Cloth of the seats does not really look like the Toyota "Sport Cloth", all the Sport seats I have seen looks like this.
Looks very good in the pictures but they can be very deceiving.

I paid $7700.00 for mine with 157xxx miles and I felt very lucky to get it that cheap.

I also would NOT put much faith in Carfax, use it ONLY for just a base idea because Carfax many times misses as much as it catches, it will also report bogus information.
Need a trusted mechanic to look at it.

Wow, thanks for all the responses guys! Def good call on all the pointers here...especially the "Limited" badge with the sport hood. Didn't even seen that. Now I'm thinking I should drop the whole thing.

It's pretty hard finding a nice 4x4 T4R in SoCal. I've been looking for the past 1.5 months now. Found a few here and there, but price vs. quality never seemed to really match up. I'm hoping for something less than 150K miles for less than $10k. Preferably I want to pay about $7,500. WHERE IS MY FUTURE T4R?!?!
