Tax refund

Ok, so I'm needing some opinions. Just got my tax refund of $2200 and I'm trying to figure out the best way to spend it. :D

So far my list goes:

Level 8 strike 6 wheels ~$400

3 in lift (probably tundra/LC if i can find the parts) ~no clue $

285/75/16 goodyear duratracs ~$900

TG sliders ~$250

B&M trans cooler+filter ~$90

So my question is, which could/should be done before the others while I have the cash? Otherwise I'll probably just blow it on more lights. :naughty:

Any ideas on how much the lift costs approximately? Or places to buy the parts new? No one seems to be selling even used parts like that around here...

Do the trans cooler first. Also do any maintenance that's needed, like upper/lower ball joints, inner/outer tie rods. Make sure everything is in great shape before doing lift and bigger tires.
 
Ask the IRS for interest on the money they've withheld from you. Then, Just do everything at once. You'll need to think about CV boots (and or axles) with lifting. Bushings? Quite the can of worms with that list. I've found it's always better to plan on more problems and money before you start. I agree with cdrewferd, plan this accordingly. Do you have the TBU, LBJ's, tie-rods etc.? It's soooo much easierto do it all whilst it's torn apart. I'd say start with lift and tire fitment. Then, go as quick as economically possible with the rest. Lights will be the least of your problems if you have to keep tearing the truck apart to accommodate all of the mods you may need to troubleshoot -
 
you know as much as it would pain me if i was in your shoes to hear that or consider that, thats probably the best advice out there. get that stuff done, its what i did before i lifted. i know you need tires, so that might be something you want to look at with any extra thats left over. id probably stick with a 265 75 16 just so you can run it with a stock height rig. i know and i wanted the 285s, but i dont think your limited finder flares will allow for it. later on when you lift you can always sell your tires to someone who will need a set of tires. and dont combined the tundra TRD coils with the LC coils, the LC coils are way too tall. id just go with the toytec 3"eibach coils(much cheaper and better coils if you ask me) and the LC coils. but if you are set on the TRD tundra coil(i dont see why as its a smaller lift) then you should want the OME906 to match it.


and for what its worth i didnt snap my shock like i though i had, it just unthreaded itself, so i will need to rethread it back into the eye and ill be good -so id still recommend the bilstiens
 
ok, so tweaking the list a bit:

Trans cooler, wheels, tires? (265/75/16), sliders, LBJ & UBJ, CV boots, bushings, tie rods?

Any ideas where I can price out the last 4?

Probably a good idea to do these, I'm just jumping in too fast. First 4x4 and I really wanna do it right but I'm an impatient person. Haha.

Good to know. Thought you were going to be selling your wheels for some new shocks. :P
 
Do all your required maint. Lbj and tie rods ujoints maybe or at least give them a good greasing. A lift will only bring out the worst in anything not up to par. Trust me. I always plan for ten percent in unforeseen cost when I do anything with my vehicles. 900 dollar tires but and extra 90 bucks for install and balance. Then alignments and so on and so on.
 
Like the kid said, go with 265 75 16s rather than 285s. 285s will suck the life out of your 3rd gen. Dont listen to people who say they didnt notice any difference between stock and 285 tires. You should have the same gearing as me, 410, and with that gearing your truck will be gutless with 33" tires. I live less than 1000 ft above see level here in WI, and my truck frequently downshifts into 3rd gear on the highway going up baby inclines at 70mph with my 265 75s. I just bought a set of 430s here on the forum to try to gain back some power to the wheels. Unless you plan on regearing, dont go any higher than 265 for tires.

On a side note, where do you people work and live that you get these things called TAX REFUNDS? I think I'd stumble upon a Squatch before the gov't gave money back to me!

Yeah, didn't think about that point. I decided to go with 265/75/16s since that's the same size I have now. At least they will give me traction... Even now I have it downshift up hills that seem like it never needed it before I did the poor mans ISR mod. I'm just trying to get everything built up before this summer when we go out on road trips.

Paying for college gets me a lot back. Like $1600 worth.
 
Between my college classes and two kids, we netted almost $8500 in taxes this week. As stated, first things first, your front end turns those new tires and the sliders are a great addition, just make sure your suspension is in check so you can wheel without the risks of suspension issues. With 265's you can wheel it pretty good without having to lift it right now and still have fun off-road. With $2k, I wouldn't shoot for a lift since lift usually equals bigger tires, axles when you start to break them with the increases angle from the lift, suspension parts that wear quicker, and the list always goes on and on with mods/parts. $2200 is a nice chunk of change to get your 4runner off-road worthy though. It is really just personal preference on your mods, as long as your truck is road worthy enough get the tires and sliders, maybe off-road bumper since you like to wheel? Good luck on your build.
 
I agree with everyone who's said get the basic maintenance worked out first. I spent around $2200 getting my 4Runner back to perfect operating condition. LBJ's, struts, shocks, valve cover gaskets, plugs, wires, diff fluid, oil, stuff like that. OEM Toyota parts aren't all that much more expensive and you know it's good stuff. www.parts.camelbacktoyota.com has some good prices. I got all mine through the dealer though. It's a good feeling being able to hop in and drive across the country. Granted, I'd love some Duratracs and a lift but it'll have to wait.

I remember reading a while back that most of the Limited models come with 4.30 gears with the auto trans and 4.10's were given to the sr5. Manuals came with an even lower gear. Is there any truth to that?

I believe that with the optional RR diff. lock that my 98 Limited has 4.30 gears and that my old 98 sr5 had 4.10's. I never checked on either, but I read somewhere that with the rear locker 4.30 and 4.10s without the RR diff lock. Unsure though.
