i kinda wish i knew exactly what each setting ACTUALLY does.. i go back and forth for different types of terrain to see if i can notice a difference sometimes..
 
A-trac only works in 4-Lo, not something you really want to use unless you're stuck. Pretty decent thread here discussing the merits of each, and there are plenty of videos on YouTube showing each in action. driving in snow is also fairly analogous to driving in sand.

Is it strange that I read the manual, the way most people read a novel, over the first few days after purchase?:nerd:

Nope, when I got home from the dealership, I immediately sat down and started reading the manual. Had it inside the house for like a week. My girlfriend thought this was quite strange, but come on - half the excitement of getting a new vehicle is having a new manual to read!

Really though, it would have been nice to have some instruction, but my guy knew nothing of the locker. I was hoping at toyota jamboree there'd be a toyota rep there that could demo, or at least explain. Nope.
 
Too bad the rear diff lock only works in 4L. At least the Mud and Sand function works in 4H, but that's the only mode that does.

i know all of what you posted.. i want to know when do the elec. systems kick in.. a higher speed slip vs lower speed in each mode aka what does each mode offer systems wise that the other mode doesn't offer.. does it hydraulically allow the sway bar to move around more in one mode vs the other?? etc.. i'm not an idiot i know the basics people, and i know most of you don't know the answers either. THAT'S what i wish Toyota would leak out for us enthusiasts to know.

Ummm... I use A-TRAC to avoid getting stuck, pretty awesome combo with the rear locker.

The terrain select serves two purposes and you don't have to read the manual to understand what they do and why. The first purpose is to maintain traction and stability. The second prlurpose is to protect the vehicle.

I recommend using A-TRAC to avoid shock loading your axles, especially your CV joints. You shock load your axles when you send excess power to a slipping or spinning wheel that suddenly gains traction. In that case the tire and ground act as a clutch. If there is substantial traction it is like dropping the clutch and the joint absorbs the force or breaks.

For the different modes:
Sand - higher shift points, more wheel spin, more throttle response. If you use this in snow hold on unless you are trying to pull stunt maneuvers. For KDSS I believe it stiffens suspension
Moguls - limits wheels spin, KDSS loosens suspension
Rock - KDSS loosens suspension, hyper sensitive wheel spin prevention and increased throttle response.
Mud - increased wheel spin, loosened suspension

That's probably not what you'd read in the manual nor is it a perfect description but it should give you an idea.

Valid points, but I suppose it would depend on the kind of terrain you wheel in. Certainly, there are a lot of circumstances where it would be tempting or even advantageous to spin your tires to clear an obstacle: travelling up a hill with loose dirt, driving in sand/snow, or when trying to clear mud from your tires. But I think in all of these situations it is unlikely that a skilled driver would just bury the gas pedal (with traction control off, of course) until the point where one or more tires caught traction, and therefore shock loaded either axle.
This is why I say that I use A-Trac to free myself when stuck. The system limits wheel spin by applying the brakes to a slipping wheel, and transferring power through a limited slip dif, to a wheel that has traction, thereby mimicking (to a point) the action of a locked dif. All of this happens at a relatively low RPM, and in low gear.

But hey, that's just me. I guess I've always subscribed to Warn's motto: Don't spin out, winch out.

A-TRAC was designed to keep you from getting stuck, in other words if you only use it when you're stuck you're missing the point and the benefits of having it. But to every man his own. If you paid for it you might as well use it. I think everyone's goal is to limit wheelspin and to wheel with finesse, limiting wheel spin.
