TE & SR5 have Auto Disconnecting Center Differential & Locking Center Differential

Part-time 4wd and locking center diff are mutually exclusive.

I know there are 4wd systems that work like full-time 4wd on low speeds and disconnect the front diff when doing >60mph or so. But those systems must have 3 diffs to operate.

4th gen multi-mode is the best 4wd I've ever seen so far.

You know Mitsubishi montero-s have SuperSelect 4wd that is actually multi-mode but without the ability to lock/unlock center diff on demand.

4th gen multi-mode has the following variations:
2wd,4hi,4hi locked center diff,4low,4low locked center diff (5)
5th gen part-time:
2wd,4hi locked front/rear diffs,4low locked front/rear diffs (3)

3 is definitely less than 5 and it's definitely 2 steps backwards.

The moment I saw a picture of that manual lever for the transfer case I knew it was going to be an issue. It looked exactly like the lever on my brothers FJrunner, A 4wd System strictly for offroad. That is why a created the other thread “Transfer Case Question” to confirm my suspicions of the new 5th gen.

I appreciate my 4th gen more knowing I have a really have an awesome 4wd system.

What about the GX470 setup? Isn't that a lever but still Torsen? Could they have just 'parts-bin engineered' it that way?

To me the Torsen in the t-case is one of the defining features of the 4Runner. It will suck if they blew it on this...

I believe the GX is Fulltime 4wd, lever hi-N-Lo, fulltime should already have a torsen diff

Same drivetrain as the V8 4Runner, Full-Time 4WD only.

Yes their set up is very nice, Ideal actually.

Fulltime 4WD Torsen center diff, lever operated.
move lever forward = Low
center = Neutral
move lever back = High

They also have a 2nd gear start button, center diff lock/unlock button, hand operated parking brakes.

The GX setup is similar to the Limited, except the diff lock I believe is consolidated to the electronic knob
