Teach me, oh wise ones, about HIDs

ok so just get the DDM Tuning apexcone raptor kit bc the engine compartment has plenty of room for u to put it so no sense in wasting more money for the smaller ballast plus the smaller blast takes longer to fully illuminate the HIDs to fully color and brightness.

Link to the Raptor DDM kit:
HID Kits, BMW Aftermarket Bumpers & Lighting, DEPO - DDM Tuning

So wat u basically need is:
1. 35w or 55w (not suggested IMO)
2. H4 bulbs so that you will have full HI/Lo kit
3. Color Desired 4500-6000k is best

Once u have picked these it will come with a relay harness to protect ur wires from melting. Comes with all HI/LO kits from this company... You can just leave the HID harness and code eliminator options blank. If u need anymore help just let me know.

Thats the same link I posted and if the 100 series guys are using them I can assure you they are pretty good.

We need H4's? Somebody told me I needed h1's but if H4 will fit with no problem then I'd rather do that too.

CJ80, when are you going to order yours? I might order them today or tomorrow. If you ever make it up to Bham we need to figure out some mods we can do and help each other out. :girl:

If you install HID's..... (For the benefit of all other drivers;) PLEASE retrofit a projector to your (hopefully 99-02) headlight assembly.

If you are putting them in the stock housing, buy the DDM Hi/Lo kit for the H4 bulb. get a 35w unless you are doing projectors otherwise you are going to be blinding people. i got the 35w 6000k Hi/Lo kit from them and it works great. it has a shield for the bulb on low beam and then the bulb moves for high beam. i never get flashed with it. get 6000k or less because anything above that is just going to be ricer blue. the 6000k is actually just a little to blue for my liking but its not enough for me to want to change it.

i agree with steeze... but ya ppl usually say to get the H1 bulbs bc they are retrofitting projectors into their headlights and thats wat most of them use. But if u are just using the stock housing then ull need the hi/lo H4 bulbs. DON'T forget to readjust ur headlights a little lower so that ur not blinding oncoming traffic...

Ok, that makes sense. So H4s it is.

Glad to see some common sense in this thread today. Please, don't be a jack@ss and just stuff HIDs into the factory housing!!! :bash: They weren't designed for the emission pattern of an HID envelope, and you will be blinding oncoming traffic ALL THE TIME!!! Also, you WILL eventually get pulled over for it (I know at least 5 people who swore they wouldn't, and eventually did).

If you're going to go to HID, either do the projector retrofit or use the kit Steeze mentioned. THANK YOU!

(I know I'm coming off as an @sshole here, but I'm tired of being blinded by ricers and morons who do HIDs half @ssed. :uzi: It is ILLEGAL!!!) :police:

Co flyfisher: all of the HI/lo kits that DDM Tuning sells comes with the shield to reduce glare for on coming traffic and i know that projectors are great but i know some ppl cant afford it or dont have the skills to do the retrofit themselves. Just sayin...

*Most important note for everyone that has HIDs with or without projectors is to keep the shield on if offered and DO readjust ur headlights lower!

i have had mine for a year and a half and i never get flashed and have never been pulled over for them. yes there are a lot of HID setups that have a ton of glare and easily blind people. but installing projectors is not the only way to run HIDs. my 35w DDM's with the casper shield and the 99+ headlights work really well and i have a DISTINCT cutoff. obviously retrofiting projectors in a better way to go but buying coilovers for lifting is a better way too and not everyone does that.

I have HIDs in my 2001 4runner, I put aftermarket Silverstar bulbs (that can be picked up at any Autozone, Checker, Pep Boys, etc in my wife's 2001 4runner.

Here is my experience with both, you can draw your own conclusion on what you'd like to use.

1. On my truck the HID bulbs that are equipped with a high beam have poor light output when the high beams are turned on. HID lights come up to temperature slowly, so you can't have a high beam that is HID otherwise it would take several seconds for the high beam to be effective. Thus when I click to turn on my high beams the light output is way below my normal HIDs (looks like my stock high beams or worse) pretty much making my high beams useless. My HID normal output is WAY better than the "high" beam output so I don't even use my high beams.

Interesting I hadn't heard of this before. I'd like to hear from others' what their experience has been. I definietly like my highs to activate quickly! So for the ones that are not dual in/dual out... do they just have halogens? can you replace these with say, the silverstars etc?

Here is a thread form HID Planet that will give you a good basic understanding of everything you need to know:

http://www.hidplanet.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2080

Here is an excerpt that explains why you don't want to use HID bulbs in Halogen housings:

Now for the question about putting hid bulb in a halogen housing, you cannot do this. Any reflector or projector designed for a halogen bulb will not work with hid. the reason is the different ways the two bulbs emit light. Halogen has a small filament in the center of the bulb, whereas hid has a very large arc tube that emits light. The two require completely different optic design for the lens. The hid reflector and projector are designed based on the geometry of the hid bulb and how it emits light. This is why the oem hardware works so well.

Now if you decide to go with a cheap kit and throw it in a halogen housing, bad things will happen. One, there will be alot of stray light (glare) above the cutoff line which will shine directly into drivers eyes. This is very dangerous due to the angle and brightness of the light. Also, you will have areas on the road where there is no light, and areas with more light. This produces hot spots, or uneven areas of lighting. While some kits provide decent ground light, much of it is lost above the cutoff and never makes it to the ground. in addition, halogen headlamps just do not provide a wide enough beam to really put the extra hid light to use. For example, lets put an H4 rebased hid kit into this civic halogen reflector. Look what happens on the wall, the cutoff is nothing but a large blob, and there is alot of light above the blob where there should not be any.

Now lets take a look at the ground. While this kit provides acceptable results, the beam is still similar to stock. There is alot of foreground missing, and the beam does not go very far or wide.

Now what happens if we switch to an oem hid projector and look at the ground. There is perfectly even lighting all around, stretching out from the edge of the bumper to the far distance. Also look how wide you can see to the left and right, into the field.

And another to show how much wider the beam is. Since hid is so bright, engineers can adjust the projector to output a much more spread out beam. Halogen projectors on the other hand must focus light more to a smaller area.

Now look what happens when you put a real hid projector up against a wall. Instead of a big fuzz, you get a sharp straight line with light below and darkness above to limit glare to other drivers.

So if you are really interested in better headlight performance, you NEED to Retrofit projectors into 99-02 housings.

here's my retrofit from an fellow board member.

If you have any more questions, Pm SikHiluxSurf. He was the one that did the retrofit for me and couldn't be happier with it.

I used to run hid's with no projector and the output was horrible. If you do it, do it the right way and don't cut corners.

Fx projectors with tsx lens.

Why are HID's being associated with ricers? Think some one watched Fast and Furious too many times. They also use steering wheels and windshields, so we should probably find an alternative. Point being, HID's are newer technology why not upgrade? I've had a 6000K kit in my 66Galaxie for a year and never have I once been flashed or pulled over. I go through the Hurlburt Field gate every night and the gate guards (who happen to be anal as hell) haven't said anything about my lights. I'll never have projectors again, I hate the dam cut-off. My kit will be here by the end of the week. I ended up sticking with 6000K like the Galaxie. YouTube - 6Dsick 6000k HIDs

Ricers = useless crap that is for looks mostly. I think 6000k is ok
