that advantage of having an suv over trucks?

I myself currently own an '05 4runner (black) sport ed. I currently reside in Vancouver, Canada and here our new Tundras cost roughly $40,000 for a 4x4 5.7L double cab. What's up with that? ( the runner costed $43,000 before tax)I mean..logically wouldnt it make more sense for a truck to cost more due to the material that would be necessary to manufacture it and on top of the new behemoth engine? Am i missing something? Why are suv's generally more expensive than trucks? For some reason I feel like I got the short end of the stick...Maybe it's just me, but I'm all about the bang for your buck..and the Tundra wins IMO there especially over a midsize.

i would assume that while even though trucks are more functional, that SUV's are just more popular to buy, cuz they're stylish, seat more people, etc...

Interesting... It's tough to do an apples to apples comparision but here are my observations (4Runner vs Extracab):

1) SR5 vs SR5 the cost is about the same. The Xreas and the hood scoop cost you alot! The 4Runner Sport is not the best value.

2) 4Runners are more robust in certain areas. Boxed frame, a better 4WD system (i think), DAC/HAC.

3) Options & features!! Sunroof = $$, Rear power window, is the spare on the tundra on a matching rim??, I'm sure there are many more.

4) I would assume that a trimmed out cargo area cost more than a bed. More windows, cargo door, plastics and storage cubbies, carpet, tanno cover (sp??)

Also I doubt the new V8 costs Toyota any more that the 4.7 It's
just a new engine, like when the 4.0 came out to replace the 3.4

4) Almost forgot. The 4Runners proven toughness, durability and reliability. Priceless!

The Sport Edition is more than just XREAS and a hood scoop. You also get a really nice wheel design only available on that model. Don't forget the steering wheel mounted stereo controls, the painted side mirrors, the unique roof rack & running boards, the two-tone shift knob, the larger brakes, etc...

Personally, I think the Sport Edition is worth more than the amount of money it costs over the SR5.

I agree. The best "bang for your buck". The limited was nice but in 2005 they had the but-ugly wheels for it and the ugly roof rack and wanted like 6 or 7 thousand more than my SE...

Compare 3rd gen Runners to the last gen Tacomas and inside and out the Runner uses nicer materials plus more is involved in making an SUV than a pickup which doesn't need more interior. Tacomas don't have sunroofs either.

It's easy to see why a PU doesn't cost as much as an SUV.

Yes, they are larger than the sr5's. Not quite sure how they compare to the Limited's though...

The SE also have heated outside mirrors, which for me are very important since my truck sits outside every night in the Upstate NY winters. I also think the SE is the better choice. I will be getting a new one next year but I can't see spending the extra for the Limited. It seems that its only 4-5K more for just leather.

SUV's typically have more advanced safety systems because you have more occupants. Also, cabin noise levels are less since this is primarily a passenger vehicle, not a work truck. Suspensions are softer and/or more specifically tuned to on-road/off-road duty versus a truck which is tuned more towards work duty. Most of the time the drivetrains are also setup on an SUV for smooth power, not raw torque (like a truck) and finally SUV's are in demand (basic laws of supply and demand).

That's only true of the '06 & '07 models. Prior to that, the 4th generation Limited wheels were available on the SR5. Only the Sport Edition had distinctive wheels that couldn't be optioned on any other trim level.

That is an interesting point. The answer is yes but the larger rolling stock of the wheel can be a concern. If you were going from say a 16 inch wheel to a 22 inch wheel you should also upgrade the brakes. Since it is only two inches (I assume you have the 16 inch wheel) it will not be a problem. You can always buy larger brakes if you are really concerned but it would definitely not be necessary.

Any net increase in weight from larger wheels would most likely be negligible, especially considering the overall weight of a 4Runner. I really doubt there's a considerable weight penalty with the 18" Limited wheels and tires. Besides, the tires on an 18" wheel are probably lighter than tires with the same overall diameter on a 16" wheel because of the lower profile sidewall. Either way, it really shouldn't make much of a difference at all.
