The 3.4L TRD Supercharger Thread

I'd pick it up. People have been bashing the URD stuff a lot lately, but it works for the majority of the users. It will take some adjusting, but you'll end up with a solid set up as long as you aren't trying to push your set up to the limits.
Yep exactly if you fall into the narrow band O2 category it is a pretty good way to. I could have done it on mine, but I didn't need the extra fuel so I saved some cash. They dont make a bad product, but like I said the communication is the issue.

So I have a chance to buy a 7th injector used at a decent price. I would rather go this route since it is a simple drop and drive comparded to the meth and a tune. From what I'm reading recently on this thread it would not be a bad route as I have a 98 5speed correct?

Yeah I would certainly do it again and I even paid full price. Make sure you have the software cd and try and acquire the base URD tuning maps from someone on here. My stock ones were close ***caveat*** by "close" I mean I felt a major difference and the low RPM ping was substantially reduced, BUT I haven't gotten an actual AFR gauge going yet which is required to achieve the levels a lot of people are after. I just had to add some more timing retard and a little more fuel at the lower end just to remove the audible ping based on how I drive it (which is moderately mild based on what I hear some folks pounding their rides to do...they aren't a dragster)

But you'll notice a difference and the tuning for the early ones like yours is thorough enough to make it a valuable purchase. Just come back to this thread for tuning tips. The greatest of reputations URD has not- Yoda (yota)

Is this correct?

Narrow band 02 t4r is before 99-00 models that had upstream O2 and downstream O2.

wide band 02 t4r is 99+ model with AFR upstream and 02 downstream.

MTD, will your setup w/ AEM FIC also work for the narrow band 02 t4r?

The beauty of the AEM is that it works for every fuel injected car ever built :)

I have a section about this my write up be cause it is a huge deal (changes install practice). But:

96-98 all narrow
manuals all narrow
99 federal all narrow
99 Cali all wide
00+ autos all wide

The upgrade kit is to upgrade the old TRD FMU which TRD quit making. You don't NEED either you can drive the car with the S/C without damaging it, without fuel mods. It seems like that the hype around the 7th has given everyone the impression that they need to have it otherwise their engine will blow up the first time they romp on it, which is not true at all.

As for what you would need if you want to go the URD route (don't recommend it for you):

Underdog Racing Development

and

Underdog Racing Development

That would allow you to tune both closed and open loop, but costs $1150 with shipping.:wtf:

I promise I will have my AEM FI/C 6 install and tuning tutorial up by the end of the weekend. If you went that route all you would need would be the FI/C and if you wanted you could build or buy a piggyback harness. I am in for a total of $400 because I bought my FIC used, but they are only $380 new with free shipping. Basically does everything those 2 URD units do for half cost and uses much better and more intuitive software. Check it out:

Amazon.com: AEM 30-1910 6 Cylinder Fuel & Ignition Controller: Automotive

Where could I purchase a piggy back harness for our ecu?

I have the same model as you do, so I am anxious to see your write up on the aem fic.

I just installed my sc last weekend, so I am still relatively new to all the equipment and tuning. The pinging is getting better though. After driving it for a little while longer I plan to do the following:

- install denso 2 step cooler plugs
- boost and afr gauges
- devils own meth injection
- 2.2 pulley
- aem fic

Currently planning to install in that order. Does this sound good?

From my research the meth injection is a much better solution than the urd 7th.

Swap the meth kit and the FI/C you really should tune it first and then move to meth and retune. Otherwise you have no idea how your ECU handles boost and if you ever to run out of meth you wouldn't have a tune to switch too.

BTW that reminds me another point for the FIC is that you can have 2 tunes on it and switch between the two with a flip a of a switch! :becky:

Roger that. Could I still use the smaller pulley with just the fic? And do they make a piggy back harness for our ecu?

Looks like I'm waiting on you to finish your write up. Lol

I may try the 2.2 pulley, but there is no guarantee that the stock fuel injectors could keep up with any more that. I am going to go meth and a 2.0 pulley next summer though for shits and gigs. Could blow up the SC but i am graduating so at that point I will just buy another if I blow it haha.

Boomslang makes a plug and play for us but it cost like $380 bucks! I made my own though which cost $30 and was only about 4 hours of work.

How to do that will be included in the write up, but it is time consuming. Here are a couple other cheaper options:

Underdog Racing Development

&

Universal boomslang

Product # BF13009
Description: Harness Extension
Price: $279

Not recommended to run a smaller pulley with no fuel mods, it will start to ping a lot. Normally people install extra fuel and a smaller pulley at the same time and then tune it.

You have to kind of throw out everything you know about tuning these vehicles when you talk about my setup. It's completely different from everything else you've seen regarding these. I think a 2.2 would be fine with the fic I can always add fuel. The question is is if it'll max out the duty cycle on the injectors or not? I need to do the calculation to be sure

It interesting that you say that do you know someone who has tried it tuned properly ?

Yeah, and like you said it demanded a lot of the injectors, I don't know the duty cycle but it had to be high. I suppose it could work in the short term but I've never tried it myself and I don't like the idea of maxing out the injectors when under full boost.

Looks like I'll be making my own, but wiring is my downfall.
Or I could just ask you to do it, for a fee of course. Lol

I completely agree, that is never a good situation. I probably should do the calculations before I continue to talk out of my ass lol. I am pretty sure it would be good, but not 100%.

Haha yeah. I mean, I doubt anyone of us are racing our 4Runners in that a maxed out duty cycle might toast the engine... but personally I'd rather run rich than lean if increasing the boost.

No hate, I don't mean to sound like their stuff is no good (tuner is but that's minor). You probably have a manual and that is the reason you can tune closed loop. If you look back I specify auto 99+ models. Every manual 3rd gen had a narrowband o2 that the urd box can tune, but for people who don't know that it is an issue when they are shelling out $1k to tune their car... So my problem with URD has not been a failure of a product just communication and ethics really. Like I said previously I have seen posts where gadget has knowingly lied about his and other products just to make a sale.... So I just want people to know there are other and sometimes better options out there.

Edit:

Just noticed that you are an auto. In that case I have no idea how you are tuned with the URD system. My bet is that your AFR's were happy before you started, mine were at 13.8-14.6 at part throttle boost and 11.4-12.0 at WOT before tuning. What are you seeing for part throttle boost before and after tuning with the URD? If I am wrong I want to know, but I can say with 99% confidence that for someone who DD's their 99+ Runner there is no way that the URD box alone will hold a tune for closed loop boost.

AFRs werent that great prior to tune. I had a part time throttle issue with low boost and 2-3k rpm. pretty much the normal driving conditions of any city driving. had my AFRs averaging 15s in that area and i knew i was leaning.
This is where i dont get why you guys have issues tuning closed with the URD?

I was able to tune that section to spray a small amount to ease the transition of that lean AFR section to match and play nicely with the AFRs around it.
After tuning it was able to immediately change my AFRs in the part throttle with 2-3k RPM to get around mid to high 12s and low 13s

Its been probably a year now since my original tune and ive manipulated it a few times throughout the year and still see happy AFRs. I literally DD my 4runner everyday throughout all different times of the day. I believe i had a harder tune than others because of my location and elevation; being at sea level.

Honestly in my opinion your AFR numbers before tuning werent bad to start with. what area of AFRs are you trying to achieve WOT and in part time throttle?

I am just over all this now. Who wants my money to install my AFR/Boost gauge, and now apparently i need the URD AFR sensor caiibrator and tune it? I bought the 7th injector because EVERYONE uses it and said it was what was needed for the supercharger....now it seems that its entirely incapable of actually tuning a 2001...:noidea: I just wanna light a match and walk away....So frustrating that I've spent this much money on URD's product and it quite literally will do NOTHING its supposed to, unless....WAIT FOR IT....I BUY MORE OF THEIR SH!T and install it....AWESOME! cause when i spoke to URD and ordered the vehicle specific wiring harness and mentioned what i was installing it on, you would think that at some point it would have come up that the 7th literally doesn't actually do ANYTHING as a stand alone.....

RANT OVER.

Why would you say the 7th is incapable of tuning your 01?

The URD 7th did everything i needed it to do and was well capable of tuning my 2000.
Whats your issue you think you are having? Why do you think you need to buy more stuff?

Is your URD 7th even installed? Only reason i ask is that i cant help you unless you at least have it installed.

When in that 2-3k range what boost levels are you at? Remember the piggy back works off map and rpm so you could have been bellow boost pressure but been at 2-3k.

My AFR at wot should be 11.5-11.7 those are the golden numbers. And 12.5-13 at part throttle boost.

Well you CAN tune wot and the small transition to it, but you can't tune closed loop part throttle boost.

so I've been tossing the idea around of an electric exhaust cutout, basically i would want to do it before the cats, which in return would make it even better then a high flow cat and exhaust, also it would probably sound mean as hell. does anyone think this would be a bad idea ? also would it throw any trouble codes. haven't really looked a ton into this but i wanted to ask just to see what you guys thought about it
