was installing the headers a very hard job? it seems like you'd have to remove a lot of stuff (like the SC) to gain access. could you do it in the driveway?

It's not that hard on the 3RZ but on the 5VZ I'd think you'd want to put it on a lift.

Even on a lift it would be a pain.. I'd almost suggest removing the trans you can see everything then lol.

Oh come on...it's not that bad. The only difficult part of installing the headers is the cross over pipe. I did mine at the same time I was installing a body lift, which made it pretty simple. I just left the front nuts off the body bolts and lifted the body up. It only took like 2"-3" and the cross-over pipe slid in is place. It didn't fall into place...but with just a little maneuvering it went in. Start to finish on the whole job took about 2-3 hours with 2 of us working.

I put off installing my headers for almost a year, cause everyone said you had to pull the motor or pull the trans. Worst job you could ever do on our 4Runners...I heard it all. I agree, it wasn't the easiest job I've done...but it wasn't nowhere near the 10 hour horror job everyone describe. So grab a buddy and Just go for it!!

easier, gives you more room to wiggle that cross over pipe out of the way.

I'm curious if anyone has had problems running the supercharger with the IK22 plugs but without the 7th injector? I replaced the plugs with the IK22's at the same time as installing the supercharger and had been getting continuous misfires that I had to keep clearing constantly. Then last week I took the plugs out and put back in my old ones that only had a few thousand miles on them and haven't had any misfires since.

I am having this issue. OCCASIONALLY getting P0306 code/rough idle/ misfire when running ik22 plugs with stock pulley. Only seems to happen on colder days and seems to fix itself after the engine is warmed up. I am going to try to see if changing back to the factory spec plugs (denso K16TR11) fixes my issue.

IMHO...I think your BL will make it a lot easier. Heck with an 1.5" BL I'd just try it. Couldn't hurt...right??

Mine started happening about 4k miles in. I think the ik 22 plugs are supposed to last 30k miles so something else may be at play here.

sc not street legal in cali

I found myself day dreaming about one day making my bid on 3.4 supercharger on LCE website. To my surprise, it read on their website today that it's not street legal in california. any thoughts? does this mean us cali guys can't have sc in our runners anymore? thoughts?

Not sure this has been posted here, but since I kept failing my smog test in CA due to a mismatching E.O. sticker for my 2002 4Runner, I thought I would mention it:

The E.O. sticker for a 2001-2002 4Runner with a super charger IS different than the E.O. sticker for the earlier 3rd gen models.

The correct E.O. for the later 3rd gen models is D-425-15, which must be listed on the sticker, and the part number for the sticker itself is MDC# 00602-89020.

Some posters have said you can print off a document and show it to the shop for approval, I tried and it has never worked, but best of luck. The sticker was $1.09 at my dealership after tax.

Literally everything checked out at the shop, everything. But the tech said he couldn't pass me unless I had the correct E.O. sticker, so I got the sticker and retested. There wasn't an issue with the car itself.

Thanks for the info. I live in CA also and have to get my truck refereed due to installing a 5 speed in my 02. I also have a supercharger with 7th injector. What size pulley do you have on your supercharger? Curious if that was noticed as I have the 2.2" - non stock.

Is it possible for the SC to cause the valve cover to leak? I replaced them a few months ago and it didn't leak at all. I put the SC on last weekend and now it's leaking from the drivers side.

Might be a little bit on the picture, my roommate took my truck out for something. The supercharger is completely stock, no 7th injector (I wish), and a stock pulley. The tech literally told me that everything checked out, but he couldn't pass me solely because of the sticker being mismatched.

I went to a referee too to maybe get a decision that trumped the other tech's call, but the referee said the exact same thing. So I finally got my hands on a sticker from TRD.

How to check for detonation?

When in 5th gear, going up a hill, going 60mph+, when I accelerate I think I hear the faintest sounds of pinging. I don't want to confuse this with the mechanical noises occurring when I add more load to the engine by accelerating.

What's the best way to check for detonation?
