The 3.4L TRD Supercharger Thread

Where is everyone buying replacement SC belts at? TIA

I think I got mine at Napa auto parts

Just get the part number and tell them it’s what you need and they can get you the belt in gates or whatever they brand they use.

Thanks for the reply.

Can the Supra injectors be used with the URD 7th if I can't get it to behave with just the injectors? Or would I need to pull them off if I had to add the 7th?

The Super charger upgrade is solely for towing our camper so worried about high gear ping. I never WOT or pull high RPMs (I drive like an 80 year old most of the time) so high gear low RPM is my only real worry.

Thanks

In your use case, I would recommend not going just with Supra injectors. From what you describe, you will only be using the engine in closed loop. Closed loop is when the oxygen sensor controls the fuel supply to keep it at a stoich 14.7 AFR which is what causes the high gear low RPM ping issue. It gets to hot and runs too much timing and pings. If you put only the Supra injectors in it will pull all that wonderful extra fuel that gets rid of the issue and instead keeps it exactly the same as your old 4Runner injectors, effectively making the upgrade null and void. Only at open loop (greater than 70% throttle) does it add the extra fuel.

The 7th injector kit instead has a piggyback controller that will override the oxygen sensor reading and add fuel in closed loop. It also allows you to pull timing in the 2000-2999 RPM range where the majority of pinging happens (once you hit 3K RPM the ECU takes an active role in pulling timing advance). This would be the best option. Now of course, you can still add the supercharger alone and see how it drives. If you are at any kind of elevation over 1000 feet, you may not have any ping at all.

As always Jerod, bingo.

OR!! He could just mash on it all the time teehee...

It’s funny how timid most of us seem to be. I’ve had mine SC’d for like 7 years or something and I’m just recently starting to be more aggressive with it and man, having a heavier foot REALLY opens them up Hahahah.

What inspired me was a coworker: he used to build monster Supra engines, the straight 6’s I forget the insignia. But anyway he claims to have had many that had upwards of like 800 horsepower or some insane amount and then ran HARD. Turbo charged I’m sure and all hopped up with fancy tuning.

Anyway, what I’m getting at is that it seems to be pretty safe to ride them a little hard after being properly warmed up and all that of course. These 3.4’s are pretty stout engines for what they are.

Ha, yeah isn't that true? I have to actively remember to open up the throttle. I push it to WOT only a few times a year I'd guess. But I've blown one engine already so I guess I have reason to be sparing with my right foot.

The 5VZ-FE is surprisingly stout on the bottom end. Toyota purposely overengineered it for longevity so it can survive abuse and keep on truckin. It's the top end that will fail first, cracked valves, head gaskets and my personal favorite, random shims that pop out after installing performance camshafts that overstress the stock valve springs causing the shim to explode and spray metal shards all over my engine.

I have a '97 as well and I too had trouble figuring out the vacuum hose routing as it related to the power steering pump. Apparently, few of the 5vz-fe 4Runners had this arrangement.

See Figure G on page 22 of the guide 4Reak Show provided the link to. Basically, the one hose goes where it went before, just downstream of the air cleaner box, and the other tees into the PCV hose. FWIW, when I teed into the PCV line I also installed a catch can which has caught about 1/8 cup of sludge over the last 1,500 miles.

Thanks ShakenBake! I had emailed Magnuson to ask them where it went. They sent me the same Figure G but told me "I think you will need to install a "T" fitting to connect the line to the evap line....." That didn't make sense to me but looking at the whole figure I did find the "T" that goes to the PCV hose so I did that instead.

Catch Can easy to install? Was looking in to that but wasn't sure where to mount it or where to tie the lines into.

Wow, that's a laundry list of items to do all at once. Some seemingly simple things but...

Is your fuel filter installed correctly? I don't think it's possible but if it was backwards...

Also P0100 and P0101 are very rare codes. Double-check your 7th injector wiring and do not use butt connectors, only solder the wires. Too many friends of mine have had odd codes because their wiring came loose. The inability for the ECU to see the MAF signal will kill the engine, every time.

UPDATE: Took it to the shop to take a look at it....I was out of ideas. Turns out I nipped one of the MAF wires when I cut the electrical tape around the rubber boot protecting the wire bundle in the engine bay.

Now she runs perfectly. Even got it tuned....9.5PSI of boost and a little over 200HP.

Nice! Hey a couple of dyno questions for ya as you and I are some of the rare people who have stuck a 4Runner on a dyno in the past 10 years.

Do you have an auto or a manual? I have an auto and couldn't get a good 3rd gear pull where the final drive ratio is 1:1 due to the speed governor cutting fuel at 107 MPH, around 4800 RPM. Did you encounter this issue?

Did you get a lot of pushback of "oh we don't do Toyotas" when trying to find a dyno? Shops were turning me down even for just a plain ol dyno run with no tuning sessions.

I have auto. I honestly have no clue. Just from observing nothing really significant until she went into 2nd then cut out at about 5700/5800rpm...dunno what the mph were.

Haha....yah there isn't a lot of shops on island with a dyno to begin with and most of the shops are picky about what cars they do. I got lucky and made friends...the guy who did mine mostly does Hondas but took on my project for a little more than he charges the other guys.

Any printouts of the dyno run? Always fun to see a supercharged engine torque curve.

Nah unfortunately I didn't. Was last run of the night...like 930 so told him just concentrate on the tuning.

I'll probably try dyno again later. Plan on researching headers installation, porting my cylinder heads, and trans cooler installation.

Here's mine for 2000 4Runner 4WD.
-stock pullied black Magnuson
-7th Injector
-Air Raid intake tube

No detonation and runs great with 173,000 miles. Power falls over aft each run from heat soak. Lines are a little faint but hopefully readable for the post.

Wow, your builds power pretty fast. HP numbers are always poor on our 4Runners since they start to lose power around 4500 RPM but 280TQ is a very respectable number.

Can someone confirm this check valve direction? Is what I have pictured correct??

Where is everyone installing their 7th injector AIC? I was going to install in the kick panel, but there is something in the way.

I have a complete ricer question lol.

Just installed my supercharger setup, and was hoping to have a bit more supercharger whine.

I currently have the deckplate mod done, but was wondering if the ISR mod would add anymore supercharger noise? Anyone have any experience?
